It would be a big Kiddush Hashem if I would accomplish clearly supernatural feats and announce that it is only through Sheimos. Why shouldn’t it be allowed, or even recommended?
October 28, 2014 5:22 pm at 5:22 pm #1088830lamud vov tzadikParticipantYes, but opening Hashem’s sacred book is scary. There have been stories. And also, try learning a random piece of Zohar it’s very hard to understand what it’s saying as if it’s in some funny mystery language.
October 28, 2014 5:42 pm at 5:42 pm #1088831Sam2ParticipantHaLeiVi: The fact that no one has yet claimed the reward for the Randy test and donated it to Yeshivos is a major Taana on whether or not practical Kaballah exists (nowadays).
October 28, 2014 6:40 pm at 6:40 pm #1088832Little FroggieParticipantBubba Maasis is enough for me.
Anyways… I’d like to know where you’re holding in your secret Golem project (something like the inverse hangman game).
October 28, 2014 8:46 pm at 8:46 pm #1088833lamud vov tzadikParticipantAnyone offering to create a golem? We could have a lot of fun even though some claim the story about the Maharals (by the way I once saw a picture of the Maharal and a whole lot of gedolim from his day and age and he looked really scary, I mean it – you have to see it) golem was not true let’s go ahead and try!
October 28, 2014 11:36 pm at 11:36 pm #1088834👑RebYidd23ParticipantIt’s easy to create a golem using electricity. Why do it the hard way?
October 29, 2014 12:51 am at 12:51 am #1088835BTGuyParticipantThis generation is clearly not able to handle the realm of Kabbalah in and of itself. Even getting close to the esoteric is a challenge. Kabbalah is on a different plane than the one we are tuned up for.
October 29, 2014 1:46 am at 1:46 am #1088836ari-freeParticipantJews still learning Torah and building yeshivas. That’s the kiddush Hashem that defies the ways of the world.
October 29, 2014 2:34 pm at 2:34 pm #1088837HaLeiViParticipantBehaving nicely on the subway is also a Kiddush Hashem. I’m talking about the real thing, what Moshe Rabbeinu asked for.
Sam, do you think the Ribnitzer, for example, would go and show on TV how he does ????? ????? I know of such an incident from the brother of a Talmid of the one who went along. I don’t think it was Kabbalah but it still answers the question.
Lamed Vav, I don’t plan on using the Zohar Hakadosh for that and I don’t think it would help.
October 30, 2014 3:01 am at 3:01 am #1088838RandomexMember(I was sure I’d find that this was started by LVT. I was wrong…)
Here’s a better question for anyone who wants to try it –
what’s wrong with you (personally, morally, or spiritually)?
The answer had better be “nothing whatsoever,” or you could
get yourself and possibly others hurt – or worse.
(I’ve seen extreme statements to this effect, along the lines of
“no aveiros, even accidental ones, from childhood on.”)
Sam2: Randi.
HaLeiVi:
“I’m talking about the real thing, what Moshe Rabbeinu asked for.”
More specific reference, please.
October 30, 2014 4:12 am at 4:12 am #1088839yerushalmi in exileParticipantThe ??? ???? in ?????? ??”? ??”? says that elisha hanavi could have used kaballah and did not, instead he used just davening, the Arizal also warns not to try, the risks of practical kaballah are too great.
October 30, 2014 5:20 am at 5:20 am #1088840HaLeiViParticipant??? ?? ?’ ?????? which is explained by Meforshim as open Nissim.
October 30, 2014 5:24 am at 5:24 am #1088841HaLeiViParticipantYerushalmi, yeah I’m aware. The Arizal says that Reb Shlomo Molcho died because he used Sheimos. Also, Sefer Chasidim speaks against it, although he used it somewhat himself.
But the question is, what’s wrong?
Disclaimer: This is definitely not my most pressing issue of the day, but the conversations here were becoming monotonous.
October 30, 2014 5:26 am at 5:26 am #1088842HaLeiViParticipantBy the way, it looks like there are varying degrees to this. Doing big stuff like teleporting, flying, turning invisible, seem to be out of the question. Then there’s stuff like Tefillos with specific Yichudim which doesn’t seem to be discouraged at all. Then there’s Kemeyos, which seems to get a mixed response.
October 31, 2014 2:37 pm at 2:37 pm #1088843yerushalmi in exileParticipantthe ??? ???? over there explains how the kemayos work. BTW do you know that they say that the Besht never used ????? in his kemayos, the previous Skulener Rebbe wrote a kemayah for someone with just the word ??? and that man survived the war and lived a long life afterwards, i just want to point out that kemayos are not necessarily a fair example of kaballa masis
October 31, 2014 5:23 pm at 5:23 pm #1088844HaLeiViParticipantThe Kemeyos that Rashi refers to in Shabbos is about Sheimos.
October 31, 2014 5:43 pm at 5:43 pm #1088845RedlegParticipantNever mind the Randi test. Let’s look at actuality, not illusion. I think it was Arthur C. Clark who posited that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. This begs the question, what can one do with practical Kabalah that cannot be done with modern technology? Fly? I don’t need Sheimos. All I need is an airline ticket ( talk about kevitzas haderech). We can converse face to face with people thousands of miles away. We can travel to the moon, move mountains, cure diseases, even bring the (mostly) dead back to life. Mind you, I’m talking about practical, not spiritual, application.

October 31, 2014 8:11 pm at 8:11 pm #1088848Sam2ParticipantR’ Yehonasan Eyebeschutz’s Kemeiyah supposedly had Sheimos…
June 28, 2015 2:44 am at 2:44 am #1088849Seeker54MemberIs it possible to know Kabbalah knowledge BEFORE learning the lessons. I am a female, 54 years old, raised Catholic and am having an extraordinary experience. I began watching a program on a Jewish television program on the Kabbalah basics and it was like rereading a book. I already knew about the Endless World, the nature of Light and our purpose in this world. Catholics are not taught this knowledge. It is as if I am trekking down a road I already know. I have no interest in becoming Jewish, no fascination or anything like that. I just love G-d. I have found out by intuition how things work. I use my horoscope not for divination but as a guide to do good and I can sense when a soul is present and when it has left. There are times when I am able to be in what I call the “zone” when I am in connection with G-d and can feel the Light emanating through me when I am doing the most positive loving things for others. I know this sounds bizarre. I have not told anyone of my personal beliefs and at times I get nervous and scared at being so connected so I retreat into this world and close the door. There have been times when I have felt in touch with “time” and have unconsciously blurted out a prophecy. I no longer allow myself to do that. I have read the Old Testament or Torah? I read it as a little child. I find now when I read it that new knowledge/understanding presents itself. I have decided to learn more and signed up for lessons mostly because I want to understand how to properly direct this ability. I am an artist and want to use my talent to create something that contributes and teaches others to want to do good and to serve G-d. Is it possible that in a past life I was educated in Kabbalah? Why would I know these things? It feels so natural to me. Can women study Kabbalah and attain higher levels?
June 28, 2015 3:10 am at 3:10 am #1088850YW Moderator-127ModeratorNote that I’m not a Rabbi or expert or anything, just responding to help.
You sound like a spiritual person who is trying to serve G-d to the best of her ability. I don’t know where your journey will take you, but the best way to serve G-d is to try to do good deeds, being kind and merciful. Perhaps you can teach kabbalistic art to underprivileged children, or children from large families, who need attention? Just an idea… G-d bless.
