gumball, I’m sure your father is a very responsible man, and he knows what he is doing. It is a very bad thing, and although you want to control it, you can’t. You are very worried, I would be to. I’m sure your father, as he has stopped before, he will stop when his work becomes a little less stressful. Talk to him, hang out with him when he doesn’t have a busy day and talk. Talking is a wonderful thing and can help people in so many ways. This is my advice because I know you love your father so much and you want him to be healthy.

November 28, 2014 3:16 pm at 3:16 pm #1045299☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantInternet addictions affect the family as well.
I assume Sam was being facetious when he said he’s addicted to the internet because he spends six hours a day listening to shiurim. Unless he thinks he should be using a regular sefer or learn with chavrusah.
November 28, 2014 5:58 pm at 5:58 pm #1045301Letakein GirlParticipantI’d say that an internet addiction is much worse than a slinking addiction, because the Internet has the potential to destroy your neshama, while smoking only affects your physical body.
Your neshama represents your eternity- if one gets addicted to the wrong stuff, their eternity is affected in a huge way. IMHO, that is a lot worse than having your Olam Hazeh possibly shortened!
It is true, however, that if one smokes, their life might be shortened in which case they will have less time to accumulate Schar…
Whatever, they’re both awful.
November 28, 2014 7:37 pm at 7:37 pm #1045302👑RebYidd23ParticipantBut I would live longer if others wouldn’t smoke.

November 28, 2014 8:04 pm at 8:04 pm #1045304oomisParticipantIf this was a serious question – smoking is infinitely worse IMO. Unequivocally, it can and will kill, with very few exceptions. The Internet can also have a “killing” effect when used incorrectly, but smoking kills WHEN USED EXACTLY AS DIRECTED! You can also do teshuvah for anything inappropriate for which you used the internet, but once someone has lung cancer, emphysema, or has endangered someone ELSE’S life due to second-hand smoke exposure, there is no teshuva for that – only horrible, painful, suffering and choking to death.
November 30, 2014 12:55 am at 12:55 am #1045306oyyoyyoyParticipantor has endangered someone ELSE’S life due to second-hand smoke exposure
Second hand smoke is overrated. I mean come on, if i’m smoking and Ruben passes by, I’m willing to bet that his chances of getting cancer are not higher after he passes by, or walks out of that entrance i have to be twenty feet away from.

November 30, 2014 3:07 am at 3:07 am #1045309IvduEsHashemBsimchaParticipantWhat happened to gumball’s father? I hope he quit and is ok be”h. Also, it is very impressive, Sam, to listen to 6 hours of R’ Schacter’s shiurim a day, captivating though they may be.
November 30, 2014 3:24 am at 3:24 am #1045310👑RebYidd23ParticipantI have been affected by secondhand smoke. It is a very real danger.

Most people affected by second-hand smoke live or work with the smoker. If a pregnant woman smokes, her fetus is smoking, too.
But if Ruben passes by and inhales your smoke, he could possibly be someone who is allergic to it, so don’t be so quick to automatically assume there is no harm done. If someone wants to smoke solely inside a bubble, kol hakavod. But it is unfair to force others to also breathe the air that is polluted by this habit, against their will.

It sounds to me like GumBall’s father smoked for about a week
due to sudden stress, and GumBall overreacted a little. I think
we can assume he’s fine.

Care to specify? I think it’s getting more
difficult to tell when you’re joking…
(General note – some people are definitely not reading through the thread, although presumably #poster wants us to answer the original question, without consideration of what motivated it.
Or maybe she also just wanted to know what happened in the end.)

You cant tell someone not to smoke somewhere because youre allregic. “But officer, what did I do”? “You can’t eat those nuts in the park, someone may be allergic.”
December 1, 2014 7:27 pm at 7:27 pm #1045314hashtagposterMember#the reason I bumped it was, because i was redt to someone who smoked… but I didn’t want to start a whole new thread about it..
Thanks randomex
December 1, 2014 11:42 pm at 11:42 pm #1045315oyyoyyoyParticipantTo answer the OP’s question, there’s a story (real sorry dont remember this well) in the hakdamah to the sefer “kochvei ohr” where after he dies he comes to someone in a dream and tells him that for every person the ones who are the bais din (after 120) are the gedolim of his generation. Therefore, he warns, to be extra careful about the stuff the gedolim were very makpid on. I think in that generation the godol was R Yisrael Salanter who was always warning about gezel, so he was cautioning people not to steal.
For us thats internet.
December 1, 2014 11:53 pm at 11:53 pm #1045316👑RebYidd23ParticipantCigarette smoke spreads through the air, nuts do not. Also, cigarette smoke is actually toxic.

This is from the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology website (also kinda basic thing people know):

December 3, 2014 8:45 pm at 8:45 pm #1045320secretagentyidMemberTough one. One is a physical danger, the other is a spiritual danger. How do you say one is worse than another?
From a jewish p.o.v, it would seem that interne is worse, because it gets discussed amd banned much more frequently. However the Gedolim in quetion could be working under the assumption that it is so poshut that smoking is bad, that it doesn’t need to be said.
Lets leave it as any addiction (WHO’s definition of a addiction: a pathological relationship with a thing, person, or even that has life damaging consequences. Sam2, you’re not an internet addict 😉 ) is absolutely terrible.
I mean, whats worse, Heroin addiction or cigarette addiction?
Heroin kills 3000 people per year (in the UK) while cigarettes kill hundreds of thousands. It’s not our job to say which is worse. It’s our job to support and care for an addict however we can(NOT to enable him).
