In previous generations where yeshivas had eating days and people frequently fasted during the week because they had no food, over eating on Shabbos and Yom tov wasnt really a problem. People on the whole were under nourished. Today that isnt the case, nobody strarves during the week

There is evidence that Americans are overweight but not frum Americans any more than others.
How do you know? Did you conduct a scientific survey? Can you quote a reputable survey that reaches such conclusions?
November 11, 2015 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #1111532☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI think the burden is on you, TM.
November 11, 2015 7:38 pm at 7:38 pm #1111533zahavasdadParticipantAmericans generally are overweight, however in the NYC area not as much. NYC living requires more walking and other behaviors the lower the obesity rate. Down south especially people are extremly overweight, until you travel to these places you havent got a clue how bad it is
November 11, 2015 10:58 pm at 10:58 pm #1111534flatbusherParticipantIf this is any indication, I have been told by more than one person that men’s clothing store carry suits with pant size that is generally larger than what customarily comes with that size.So a size 40 suit usually comes with 34 pants, but in some Boro Park stores such a suit comes with 36 pants. I guess they know their customers
November 11, 2015 11:36 pm at 11:36 pm #1111535☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhy wouldn’t a fat person need a bigger jacket as well?
November 12, 2015 1:08 am at 1:08 am #1111536MammeleParticipantAlthough I won’t blame Chulent specifically as it’s actually a HEALTHY food unless you overload it with fatty meats or potatoes, many frum men are indeed overweight. In this case tzuros rabbim is not a nechama as everyone with weight related health problems will need to contend with them ON HIS OWN.
Based on no relevant statistics for comparison, and since the American percentage of the population that’s obese is high and climbing further, I think everyone should use their scale & BMI as a barometer and not sugar coat (pun intended) the reality.
However ZD be aware that sushi is generally more harmful to the waistline than chulent.
Eating ANYTHING when full after a meal goes well beyond what the Rambam recommends, so overeating is not a Jewish middah. We have to get back to our mesora and stop the madness — easier said than done obviously.
November 12, 2015 2:50 am at 2:50 am #1111537flatbusherParticipantJust goes to show you that some guys just put on excessive weight more around the middle than elsewhere. Depends on the person’s build
November 12, 2015 4:19 am at 4:19 am #1111538☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIs that a chiddush? Does it in any way back your assertion that frum men are fatter and unhealthier than the rest of the population? Or perhaps I misunderstood, and you didn’t mean to assert that?
November 12, 2015 1:05 pm at 1:05 pm #1111539zahavasdadParticipantThis a a typical shabbos for many frum men
Go to Shul and after Shul there is a full hot kiddish, complete with Chulent, Kugel, Cake really enough for a full meal
Go home and eat ANOTHER full meal including chulent, Kugel , cake, bread and more
meal will finish at about 2, take a quick nap and then
eat ANOTHER full meal before 5:30ish (this time of year) .
And then later eat MORE food at night for Meleva Malka.
You have basically eaten 4 fully loaded meals without any exercise
November 12, 2015 2:35 pm at 2:35 pm #1111540flatbusherParticipantHeavy eating on Shabbos alone will not make a person fat. It’s what you do the rest of the week in terms of food and exercise. I find one way to cut down on how much you eat is to spread out the courses. Giving your good some time to digest will curb your appetite.
November 12, 2015 3:00 pm at 3:00 pm #1111541zahavasdadParticipantmammale
While Id love to eat Sushi, a nice bottle of French or Italian wine with a nice thick juicy steak every day of the week, that just isnt happening, doesnt work on my budget or my health.
November 12, 2015 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #1111542MammeleParticipantDY: who was your last comment directed at?
Whether one has a pear shaped or apple shaped (fatter midsection) body which I’d assume effects pants size is determined largely by genetics. In any case the latter is at greater risk of getting heart disease and diabetes. Since we can’t manipulate genes to change fat storage placement at this time the “Apple type” that are overweight need to lose the extra weight ASAP to remain healthy bezras Hashem.
November 12, 2015 4:12 pm at 4:12 pm #1111543flatbusherParticipantWhen it comes to suits, those with the Apple shape can always opt for Portly style, which caters to the larger man.
Mammele, thanks for making this point. However, even those whose body type does not drop them into the category of high risk, should still be careful about their weight and should exercise
November 12, 2015 7:31 pm at 7:31 pm #1111544HashemisreadingParticipantI’m surprised nobody mentioned anything about being against Sunday night Cholent?
November 13, 2015 12:01 am at 12:01 am #1111545flatbusherParticipantYou’re talking about leftovers, but to eat the cholent before the anticipated time it was designated for is what I am referring to. How many SUnday night cholent parties are there? But there are such affairs Thursday night
