What’s up with the kookie glasses?
Lately when I go to shul I can’t help but notice that I’m surrounded by a large amount of fellas in really dopey glasses.
Like an army of Hollywood directors Got their Synongogues mixed up or a group of George Burns impersonators hit the tri-state area.
I realize it’s in style, but common! Does it not have to fit the person too? I see it’s mostly chassidim, who are bold enough to showcase this trend. I find that very interesting!
January 5, 2011 2:29 am at 2:29 am #809978Trying my bestMemberIs this the Lipa style glasses?
January 5, 2011 2:32 am at 2:32 am #809979msseekerMember“I see it’s mostly chassidim…”
You mean ????? ????? ?????.
January 5, 2011 3:17 am at 3:17 am #809980smartcookieMemberI see it’s mostly chassidim, who are bold enough to showcase this trend. I find that very interesting!
No it’s not.
It’s a lot more popular by the modern people.(According to what I see)
Sorry I’m taking sides here!
January 5, 2011 6:45 am at 6:45 am #809981bein_hasdorimParticipantsmartcookie; obviously the more modern are wearing whats in style,
I’m talking about from the middle yidden, i’m just surprise.
No disrespect to the chasiddim,
I personally consider myself a Chusid, a clean shaven one.
TMB; yeah like some of Lipa’s specs, he has so many though.:-)
{(O)-(O)/}
January 5, 2011 1:45 pm at 1:45 pm #809982eclipseMemberAs long as you are THINKING FOR YOURSELF,and you actually think the glasses suit your face, why not?
But the fashion industry can definitely fool people into thinking something wierd looks normal–as soon as they show a handsome/pretty model sporting whatever it is…like pointy shoes that look like they came from Shushan, for example.
January 5, 2011 2:14 pm at 2:14 pm #809983cantoresqMemberI haven’t seen this at all. Maybe I need new glasses.
January 5, 2011 2:30 pm at 2:30 pm #809984nfgo3MemberWithout photos or illustrations, this discussion might as well critique mimes.
January 5, 2011 3:51 pm at 3:51 pm #809985A23ParticipantChasidim especially like them because it’s really the only way to express individuality.
January 5, 2011 3:51 pm at 3:51 pm #809986deiyezoogerMemberwhatever is comfortabe for you and you like it then go for it dont care whats in style out there be yourself. good for you if you could.
January 5, 2011 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm #809988A23ParticipantBombmaniac: in a word, yes.
A goy or even a MO person can choose his shirt, his pants, his shoes, etc. For chasidim, all of it is uniform and the only thing that can be different without too many people complaining are glasses.
January 6, 2011 4:21 am at 4:21 am #809990amichaiParticipantcan someone artistic draw us a pix of those type of glasses , for us pple who do not wear glasses and have no idea what you are talking about?
January 6, 2011 12:31 pm at 12:31 pm #809991eclipseMemberA23…I agree.We need to give ’em some slack….
January 6, 2011 2:01 pm at 2:01 pm #809992smartcookieMemberA23- Chassidim can choose between a thousand different shirts/sweaters/suits/shtreimels/bekeshes/shoes.
It’s not so bad as you make it….
January 6, 2011 2:04 pm at 2:04 pm #809993eclipseMemberWhen we were in high school it was all about socks.Argyle,Pierre Cardin,Anne Klein….ridiculous!Personally,I just made sure mine matched.
September 11, 2011 3:15 am at 3:15 am #809995bein_hasdorimParticipantWell now this thread is even more relevant.
If I could only read the future.
I recently saw this kid in shul, couldn’t be more than 13yo.
He was wearing HUGE black plastic round frames almost twice as
big as his face.
At first I though it was a joke, or funny shtick.
Maybe he borrowed and old mans specs. I was wrong!
It doesn’t even look cute or hip, just looks really weird, like he traveled back it time to when things were still B&W.
Would any caring mother let her son walk around looking like that Just to be very current? I’m just wondering?
Isn’t there “the looking insane factor?”
September 11, 2011 3:29 am at 3:29 am #809996GumBallMemberI wear these glasses!! i LOVE them!!
September 11, 2011 3:55 am at 3:55 am #809997happiestMember@bein, I work in a school and saw a student wearing HUGE classes like that. I asked my sister who is in her grade what was up with them and she told me they’re not even real glasses. There is no prescription in them or anything. When I heard this, I just started laughing. A couple of years ago, we would not have been caught dead wearing something like that lol.
September 11, 2011 4:29 am at 4:29 am #809998ronrsrMemberPersonally, I wear wire-rimmed contact lenses.
September 11, 2011 5:14 am at 5:14 am #809999commonsenseParticipantronsr, sounds painful!
September 11, 2011 5:17 am at 5:17 am #810000ronrsrMemberThey are just like other wire-rimmed gasses, but smaller.
September 11, 2011 5:30 am at 5:30 am #810001chocandpatienceMemberronsr: are they worn internally or externally!?
September 11, 2011 5:34 am at 5:34 am #810002chocandpatienceMemberI can’t believe these large plastic glasses are being worn voluntarily.
I still have a twenty-year old pair of those that I keep to remember how ridiculous I looked. I had no choice, though, because all the free ones were like that. I ran full tilt to contact lenses as soon as I could and didn’t look back.
September 11, 2011 6:35 pm at 6:35 pm #810003ToiParticipanti saw a pic of R avigdor miller and went, “Hey, those are in style!”
September 11, 2011 7:41 pm at 7:41 pm #810004bein_hasdorimParticipantIt such a chessed! Now if you’re taller than the kid and sitting behind them you can actually use their glasses to see the board.
as it creeps up over their eyebrows reaching over their heads.
Finally headlights are getting incorporated into eyewear.
Whats next “Bozo the Clown” shoes?
Imagine at Chassunas where during the dancing everyone is stepping on everyone else’s shoes causing chaos and discord on the dance floor. Not to mention the pain, oh the agony.
I remember years ago, this really “Braite” (extra wide) Guy landed his Boeing on my toe during the dancing at a friends wedding. Man did that hurt.
It felt like he literally put a hole in my foot.
I still have a phobia of dancing next to heavy set dudes.
September 11, 2011 8:09 pm at 8:09 pm #810005ToiParticipanti think monocles are coming back in. gonna get my self a pair.
September 11, 2011 9:00 pm at 9:00 pm #810006yoyo56Memberactually i noticed that most ppl who were these glasses are the tennagers and the young twenty year olds and some other ppl who want to be in also do i believe they look really good on the guys the girls dont look as good some of them look dumb wearing them

September 12, 2011 6:10 am at 6:10 am #810008ronrsrMemberMy wire-rimmed contacts are external. They’re like the glasses John Lennon wore, only smaller.
September 12, 2011 6:56 am at 6:56 am #810009kapustaParticipantWhats next “Bozo the Clown” shoes?
I don’t know if its still the case now, but when I was in high school these huge (and if you ask me) ugly x 10 rubber rain boots were in. Sort of what a 5 year old would wear to jump in puddles but on an adult. They were covered with polka dots and other really umm… ugly designs.
upside down letter D
Ding, ding! Great way to describe them.
September 12, 2011 2:28 pm at 2:28 pm #810010stickynoteMemberbein_hasdorim: 🙂
September 12, 2011 3:05 pm at 3:05 pm #810011ursula momishMemberToi: It would be interesting to see you wearing two monocles at once, but it might be uncomfortable for you, as (I think) they are held before each eye by the pressure of the muscles around your eye. Perhaps a pince-nez would be more comfortable, plus it is bound to offer more of a choice of styles.

True. There are thousands of black pants, shoes, suits, streimels, sweaters and bekeshes to choose from. Equally true is that there are thousands of white shirts to choose from.
September 12, 2011 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm #810013bein_hasdorimParticipantapushatayid; There are thousands of companies manufacturing right on left shirts?!! For men?!!!!! j/k 😉
Good point though!
September 12, 2011 9:32 pm at 9:32 pm #810014apushatayidParticipantAbout as many that manufacture bekeshes.
September 14, 2011 9:58 pm at 9:58 pm #810015ColombianJewMemberI don’t know what’s up with the weird glasses but I think mine are relatively modern, they are small frame titanium with UV protection.
September 14, 2011 10:12 pm at 10:12 pm #810016minyan galMemberColombian, with a hand that size, you need larger specs. Actually that is a very interesting piece of art that you are posing with. Are you the creator of it?
