Ted Cruz is a smart politician. What in the world was he thinking by not endorsing trump? Didn’t he know the mess he was getting himself into.
July 21, 2016 7:38 pm at 7:38 pm #1160428JosephParticipantHe knows Trump will lose and is positioning himself for 2020. In fact, he would be upset in the unlikely event Trump did win, since that would disturb his plan to run in ’20.
July 21, 2016 7:46 pm at 7:46 pm #1160429👑RebYidd23ParticipantBy not endorsing Trump, he stood by his principles. Selling out doesn’t make you a better politician, it makes you a sell-out.
July 21, 2016 7:47 pm at 7:47 pm #1160430Ex-CTLawyerParticipantCruz was assuring himself a lead position for the 2020 Republican nomination after Trump loses the general election in November 2016.
If Trump wins, Cruz would be out of play until at least 2024 and traditionally the sitting VP gets first shot at the nomination, so he could find himself out of the running for 16 years.
I’m hoping Trump loses and Cruz has alienated enough Republicans that they pick another poor candidate in 2020.
I admit my Democrat bias
July 21, 2016 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #1160431yichusdikParticipantIf Trump loses, and badly, as Cruz expects him to, Cruz sets up for 2020 as the only candidate who didn’t associate himself with the loser.
If Trump wins, he is pretty much no worse off, already being seen as the guy everyone loves to hate.
He didn’t keep his word, as Christie pointed out last night, but as Cruz essentially said today, he didn’t give his word to back a guy who calls his father an assassin and his wife an adulteress.
Glad I’m not an American, or I might find myself having to vote for a candidate who is only slightly less dangerous and more palatable than Trump, and that’s not very Palatable at all.

He was thinking what many conservatives are thinking who are not distracted by or swayed by the fact that trump now claims to be a republican. Hillary is preferable to trump. That said, I’ve really could have had it both ways. If I was writing his speech, I would have said. “I made a promise, and my daddy always told me to keep promises no matter what so I will endorse Donald trump”. But he could not even bring himself to do that.
July 21, 2016 10:35 pm at 10:35 pm #1160437ubiquitinParticipantWho in their right mind would endorse somebody who insults thier wife, and accuses their father of having been involved in JFK’s assassination?
Am I missing something?
Never mind the fact that in MArch Trump said he wouldnt neccesarily support the nominee (which we already knew) and he didnt care if Cruz supported him or not.
Kudos to Cruz and the very few conservatives who stand up for what they believe in

The real question is why so many people are willing to endorse Trump given his unbelievable history of absolutely outrageous lies.

July 22, 2016 4:07 pm at 4:07 pm #1160442hujuParticipantWhat Cruz was thinking:
1. I want to run for president in 2020, against the re-election of 73-year old Hillary.
2. Voters have very short memories.
3. Those few voters who do remember are going to think I look presciently smart after down-ticket Republicans go down in flames in 2016.
Is Cruz right about item 3? Time will tell.
July 22, 2016 5:12 pm at 5:12 pm #1160443rabbiofberlinParticipantDaasYochid: I am happy to see that you have a law degree and that you are a sitting Federal judge. Last time I looked, The FBI Director said clearly that her mistakes or offenses did not rise to any criminal level. Dream on. Your hero Trump is a miserable human being who will lose big in November.
July 22, 2016 5:28 pm at 5:28 pm #1160444miamilawyerParticipantI do not think Cruz made the decision based on political expedience. I think the politically expedient thing for him to do was to have endorsed Trump. No one would have faulted him for it (especially because of the pledge). And Cruz’s endorsement or lack thereof is not affecting the outcome. If anything, his failure to endorse actually cast Trump in a sympathetic light and might benefit him.
Indeed, all the reports seem to be that trump new he would not endorse him, and he let him speak anyway. In short, of course he wants to run in 2020, but not endorsing trump will not help in that endeavor.
Anyway, we are certainly living in interesting political times for the US. No matter who gets elected, 40% of the country will despise the president. Its a little crazy.

You’re doing it again. You do it when we discuss halachah, now you’re doing it when we discuss politics – you’re putting words in my mouth.
Trump is not my hero, and I don’t even know if I will vote for him.
Hillary, however, was found to have committed a crime, but let off the hook for political reasons with the ridiculous claim that no prosecutor would prosecute, when people have been prosecuted for lesser infractions.
Maybe it was in the country’s best interest that we don’t need to go through the turmoil that we would if the Democratic presidential nominee were thrown out for legal reasons, but to claim that it’s not understandable why someone would endorse Trump is to be completely lacking in objectivity.
I would similarly understand if someone would endorse Clinton because of Donald’s huge flaws.

Hillary is also a charlatan and a fraud. She also has a big ego, maybe more than Trump!
She does have political experience; starting with Watergate. Oh btw, she was thrown out of the commission for unethical behavior!
Yes, her political experience is fraught with controversy!
From then, until now!
And btw, she is a woman, so all the libs are saying this election will promote women rights.
The truth is what she did promote – that’s all right to abuse women.

July 24, 2016 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm #1160455charliehallParticipant“someone who should be in jail for recklessly compromising national security”
Sorry, but the meme was disproven. The number of properly marked classified documents that Clinton sent out via email was zero.
“is responsible for deaths of Americans in Libya”
Wrong again. Multiple investigations run by Republicans have concluded that she was not responsible for those deaths. You might want to read them.
“was found to have committed a crime”
No, she wasn’t.
“is not at all clear if anyone else having done the same thing in ref. to the server would be indicted. Sanctioned, yes”
Nope. Not even sanctioned.
Once during the seven years I worked for defense contractors I left a document out on my desk that was marked Secret. The next morning I realized what had happened and immediately reported myself. There were no sanctions. And that was worse than what Clinton did.
“she was thrown out of the commission for unethical behavior”
That is also false.
“She should have left her husband when he started his extra – marital affairs”
Political wives have often stayed with their husbands when they were having affairs. Think Florence Harding, Eleanor Roosevelt, Mamie Eisenhower, Jackie Kennedy, Lady Bird Johnson — just to name five! (To be fair, Eisenhower’s love affair with Kay Summersby was before he entered politics — he was a mere General in charge of the war against Hitler.)
And what about Trump’s multiple extramarital affairs?
“they hate blacks more than Jews. They will accept a Jew in their group, but not a black!”
You have obviously never checked out the rabidly pro-Trump stormfront web site.
July 24, 2016 4:36 pm at 4:36 pm #1160456charliehallParticipant“Your hero Trump is a miserable human being”
He is indeed a miserable human being, whose personal life is antithetical to all the things we are supposed to value as Jews.
Examples:
He cheated on two wives.
He cheats his business partners and suppliers.
He abuses bankruptcy and eminent domain laws.
He illegally created a fraudulent university and bribed two state Attorneys-General to shut down their investigations of it.
His most prominent business ventures in recent deals have been beauty pageants and gambling casinos.
He repeatedly spouts the most slanderous lies about his political opponents (see the claim about Cruz’ father being involved in the Kennedy assassination).
—
And his policies are even worse. His attempt to round up illegal immigrants will result in a police state the comparable to that of Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union. Don’t think you won’t get caught up in it. His tax plan, designed to benefit himself, will tank the economy and destroy the US dollar as a major world currency. His protectionist trade plans will create a trade war and likely a worldwide depression, just as similar policies did in the 1930s. He has already announced that the US will not be bound by its agreements to its allies — and he did not exclude Israel in that statement. He has pretty much announced that he wants to give Putin a free hand in Eastern Europe and the Middle East — and that means Assad and Assad’s terrorist buddies Hezbollah. His promotion of junk science regarding vaccines leaves us open to a major infectious disease catastrophe.
Wake up!

regarding hillary you said
“calculating liar and has been that way all her career and to award with the presidency is shameful.”
Now I agree whole-heartedly. However that is the way of politicians, they lie.
Tom Friedman explained the difference well
” What is grating about Hillary is that her prevarications seem so unnecessary and often insult our intelligence. But they are not about existential issues. As for Trump, his lies are industrial size and often contradict each other. But there is no theory behind his lies, except what will advance him, which is why Trump is only scary if he wins. Otherwise, his candidacy will leave no ideas behind. It will just be a reality TV show that got canceled.”
Trump has praised Putin, Saddam Hussein Qaddafi and Kim jung un. He has on more than one occasion advocated for war crimes. He has downplayed chemical weapon use as not a big deal.
Are we really having this conversation?
Yes Hillary is a liar. Yes she isnt trustworthy. But war crimes?!
forget the fact that many of Trump’s supporters are antisemitic and soem are already pronouncing his victory as the beginning of the 4th reich(!!). although he has on more than one occasion shown a reluctance to condemn them. I grant he isnt an antisemite. He is pro-trump that is it.
Forget that.
War crimes Should be a non-starter.
July 24, 2016 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm #1160461charliehallParticipant“didn’t the FBI find that other secretaries of state, including Colin Powell, did similar things?”
Yes, they used unsecure email. So did Jeb Bush when as Governor of Florida he used unsecure email to discuss classified matters relating to National Guard deployments.
Interestingly, though, the major data breach from the State Department was from the Department’s *classified* systems used for diplomatic cables. Hundreds of thousands of those messages ended up on Wikileaks. But none of them were Clinton’s emails — the people who broke into the State Department’s servers didn’t know that Clinton’s system existed, so they couldn’t find it. Her server ended up being more secure than the official ones.
July 24, 2016 7:08 pm at 7:08 pm #1160462charliehallParticipant“Your facts and hearsay are exactly opposite!”
Wrong. I could document every single one of the things I wrote with a link except that YWN does not allow outside links. And Clinton has not done any of the things I pointed out.
Clinton has not cheated on two husbands.
Clinton has not cheated her business partners and suppliers.
Clinton has not abused bankruptcy and eminent domain laws.
Clinton has not illegally created a fraudulent university and has not bribed two state Attorneys-General.
Clinton has not run either beauty pageants or casinos.
And Clinton has never accused any political opponents of having been involved in assassinations.
Her policies are correct, too.
She will not create a police state to round up illegal immigrants.
Her tax plan is sensible.
She won’t start a worldwide trade war. (Republicans from Eisenhower to Romney understood that free trade was good for America and for the world. Now they have retrogressed to Herbert Hoover beliefs.)
She will keep America’s agreements with its allies. Even when the opponent is Putin.
She wants both Assad and Islamic State out of Syria.
She is with scientists on the importance of vaccines.
Now, what was it that was the opposite of what I said?

But something puzzles me about your comment: your suggestion that Cruz’s witholding of his endorsement would generate “sympathy” for Trump.
Trump has his own air force, supposedly has $10 billion (I don’t believe it, but that is irrelevant to the sympathy question), gets a new wife as soon as the old one turns 50, and inherited control of a $40 million business while in his 20’s. No one has “sympathy” for Trump. Envy, maybe, respect if you believe he has accomplished anything in life or think he makes sense (I don’t), but sympathy? He don’t need no stinkin’ sympathy.

a. compared to Trump yes they are angels. the democrats arent calling for war crimes. How is that not a deal breaker?
b. Just the opposite. IT bother me that the GOP didnt do the same to bother trump.
The US is the only country that I am aware of that has this silly system of the masses choosing a party’s candidate. (Even in the US it is a relatively recent innovation). That is how the Republican party got stuck with a candidate who is not conservative at all. If you define conservative as believing in limited government and free markets, Trump is less conservative than Clinton. Which is no surprise, considering he has over the years often said over and over how he identifies with Democrats more than Republicans. Yet here we are with a bunch of authritarian nuts taking over the GOP. A few true Conservatives, refuse to join his takeover, however most are opportunists, who dont seem to believe in their own party’s message.
The DNC was right to keep out Sanders. The party elite/insiders SHOULD choose the party’s candidate. They are the ones who actually care about the party and its message.
If you want a corrupt-narcissist-big government-reality star for President, no problem go start your own party or, run as a Democrat. Why take over the GOP?

There is such a thing as a democratic process. The running for democratic primary is supposed to be democratic. Not just so who follows the party – line for line.
These parties are based on democratic principles.
This isn’t Cuba or N. Korea!
Obviously you don’t understand this, whether this applies to Trump or to Sanders!
