I’m a BT so don’t pick on my idea. I’m having IYH Subs for Shabbos lunch.
July 22, 2011 3:24 pm at 3:24 pm #789391WolfishMusingsParticipantWhat are IYH Subs?
I think I might make my Chocolate Marshmellow Mint Mousse.

Just look at Wolf. He’s going to have M?sse for Shabbos lunch.

traditional foodstuffs/Shabbos menu. the only thing different this week: I’m making turkey wings for tonight… don’t usually do turkey, & certainly not wings 😉
July 22, 2011 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm #789394ChanieEParticipant“Beer can” chicken.
can black cherry soda
whole chicken
oil
herbs and pepper
1. Wash can very well. Open can, pour out about 1/3 of the soda, use a can opener to poke a couple more holes in the top of the can. Put can in foil-lined pan.
2. Mix oil and seasonings then rub inside and outside chicken, including under skin where possible.
3. “Sit” chicken securely on can.
4. Bake
I made this a few weeks ago and it was absolutely delicious but I don’t recall the time/temp so I’m going to make it up … Try 350 for 2 hours.
July 22, 2011 4:00 pm at 4:00 pm #789395YW Moderator-80Membermy recipe for beer can chicken is much more interesting, and is always the subject of conversation
i do it just like you but i dont open the can or poke holes in it.

It’s not for lunch, it’s for dessert. The thread title question did not specify main courses.

July 22, 2011 4:34 pm at 4:34 pm #789399LSHParticipantDo you think there’s an FFB out there today who would make subs? Don’t forget it’s the summer and so we’re in the mood for something light.
We also like to make chocolate covered strawberries and bananas. If you’re serving meat then parve white chocolate is good for the bananas.
July 22, 2011 4:35 pm at 4:35 pm #789400WolfishMusingsParticipantwolf- did you make it or you just watched EEES doing it? (or did you buy it and then youre a cheater!)
Not only did I not watch Eeees do it, but I didn’t even get it out of a cookbook or other recipe. I invented it on my own (although, admittedly, I did use another mousse recipe as a partial model).
Eeees is a very good cook, but I’ve been known to be able to prepare dishes in the household. One shabbos, while Eeees was studying for exams, I prepared everything for Shabbos, including the challah (from scratch). It was the first time I was ever mafrish challah.

July 22, 2011 8:26 pm at 8:26 pm #789414beyondpearlsParticipantTo avoid the heat we bought EVERYTHING for this Shabbos.
Except, L’Kovod Shabbos, I’m making my family’s favorite first course:
Morrocan Red Salmon- baked with garlic cloves
Crudites Platter w/ Vinaigrette- blanched green beans, hearts of palm, grated carrots, sliced beets, and whatever else we might have, arranged on a platter in seperate piles with mustard shallot vinaigrette drizzled on top.
Good Shabbos!

July 24, 2011 2:28 pm at 2:28 pm #789423charliehallParticipant“you’ve seen one lentil, you’ve seen them all”
Not true at all! They have different textures and flavors.
If you’d like to try it yourself, check out Dakshin restaurant on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. (They call it Panchrattan Dal. Kashrut supervision by O-K.)
July 24, 2011 6:11 pm at 6:11 pm #789424minyan galMember“my wife made some out of this world salmon.”
So please tell us how she makes it. I am always looking for new (and easy ways) to make salmon. Lately I have become a fan of a newer line of spices by Club House. I don’t know if they are available in the US. One of them is called “Salmon”. You just sprinkle it on the salmon and bake it. Amazing. There is also one called “Greek”. Just sprinkle in your salad, add some feta and olives – a mechayah.
July 24, 2011 7:03 pm at 7:03 pm #789425charliehallParticipant“I am always looking for new (and easy ways) to make salmon.”
Real Easy Lemon Dill Salmon:
Marinate salmon filet overnight in olive oil and lemon juice. This is important as it keeps it from drying out on the blech and gives it lemony flavor throughout.
Remove from marinate and place in broiler pan. Sprinkle liberally with dried dill. Cover with aluminum foil Bake in oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit — the time will depend on the size of the filet — until flaky. Serve either hot or cold. It reheats well on the blech on Shabat morning.
Enjoy!
July 24, 2011 9:56 pm at 9:56 pm #789426brotherofursParticipanti’m sephardic, let’s c if u’ll recognize some of this stuff, this past Shabbat we had:
lemon chicken(yummmy!!)
mechshee {squash stuffed with meat}
fasoulye {beans in sauce}
meatballs and fake meatballs {ppl dont eat meat in my family}
potato pie
rice
peas
small chicken gourmets
potato kugel -(lol my mother wanted to c if she can make it as good as u guyz)
brown rice
string beans
and lahamagine
July 25, 2011 12:24 pm at 12:24 pm #789427Derech HaMelechMemberCharlieCorridor:
Crush fresh garlic, crushed onion (in the garlic press) and chopped dill with some lemon juice, olive oil and some salt. Mix it into a paste and spread it over the salmon. Marinate and bake uncovered.
When salmon is on sale my wife makes me make that two or three times a week.
July 25, 2011 12:29 pm at 12:29 pm #789428Derech HaMelechMemberI can never understand how people eat milichigs on Shabbos.
Besides, doesn’t it say “basar v’dagim, v’chol matamim”?
July 25, 2011 3:45 pm at 3:45 pm #789429minyan galMemberDerech – to get to the “meat” of the matter, the flesh of fish is often referred to as meat. Also, some folks have other dietary restrictions to take into account and many of us don’t tolerate something as heavy as meat during extremely hot weather. As long as your Shabbat meal is more enhanced than usual and you are spending it with family and friends, who could as for more?
July 25, 2011 4:34 pm at 4:34 pm #789430Derech HaMelechMemberthe flesh of fish is often referred to as meat.
Yes and so is the flesh of a fruit. But that is in English. Is that true in Judaism as well? Also, according to your explanation the zemer “v’dagim” is superfluous.
Obviously someone who has health restrictions is unable to eat meat on Shabbos. But barring that, I don’t see any reason to not eat meat on Shabbos. Maybe if someone was disgusted by the taste. The Talmud says “There is no happiness except with meat and wine”.
July 25, 2011 4:37 pm at 4:37 pm #789431charliehallParticipantA lot of great rabbis have been vegetarians.
July 25, 2011 4:59 pm at 4:59 pm #789432mamashtakahMemberI can never understand how people eat milichigs on Shabbos.
Because with a vegetarian in the house, it makes things easier. Also, we don’t always feel like eating a heavy fleishig meal when it’s so hot. A cool milchik meal is quite enjoyable, especially when dessert is Ben & Jerry’s.
July 25, 2011 6:42 pm at 6:42 pm #789433mosheroseMember“I also just finished putting up the meatballs for meatballs and spaghetti for tonight.”
Meatballs and spaghetti are not Shabbas foods.
July 25, 2011 6:53 pm at 6:53 pm #789434adorableParticipantyou really have it in for the wolf- so many others posted things that would get you ticked off normally (like milchigs and stuff like that) but you chose to respond to his post…..
July 25, 2011 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm #789435LSHParticipantThe subs turned out great. I just bought some fake turkey but I’m not sure if we’re having subs next Shabbos but I would like to have vanilla nut fudge. If you’re great at modifying recipes you can make this parve. To do this you simply use fluff for your base in the fudge. I’m really in the mood for maple candy that’s made with butter but the fudge with nuts is basically the same thing.
July 25, 2011 7:34 pm at 7:34 pm #789436Feif UnParticipantThis past Shabbos was so hot, we changed our usual menu.
We had gefilte fish, because it’s cold.
Instead of chicken soup, we had gazpacho.
Cold chicken cutlets with salad instead of hot chicken with kugel.
