I am curious how the frum population views what physical shape it is? We sometimes have skewed views of ourselves and maybe that’s why some people see no reason to improve their physical well being. How do you view yourself? What do you think you should do to improve? How is your weight in relation to your height?

Too heavy. Which is all from takeout and also things cooked with tons of flour and oil and fat. Astronomically high calories, very little nutrition.

I’d compare myself to former California Governor Schwarzenegger.

Ok. So what is the physical shape of the Frum community? I’d say it is a polygon.

Sort of like a rectangle, but with rounded edges. Opens up to a double almost rectangle, like a book.

    Round is a shape!

I guess round it is. I heard that clothing stores in boro park sell suits with pants a size larger than normally come with a particular size. That seems indicate roundness is more common. Why do so many frum people take their health for granted and do little to make sure they stay healthy?

Why do so many frum people take their health for granted and do little to make sure they stay healthy?

That assumption is grossly inaccurate. Frum people, more than anyone else in the world, do not take their health for granted.

How many others do you know that pray for their health at least three times a day? And there is no greater way to not be taking your health for granted than by asking He who grants good health to bestow good health upon you and your family.

If they didn’t take it for granted that they will always be healthy, I would think they would take better care of it–unless they are relying on a miracle,v’ain samech al ha nes. So yes they may daven for good health, but at the same time they neglect, so that to me sounds like they take it for granted that by davening alone they will be well. We see unfortunately that one has to do hishtadlus as well, and daven that he or she is zocheh to the bracha.

My husband goes to the gym twice a week. A frum only male gym that he says is full.

So maybe some people take their health for granted, but not all.

There are frum people that care and are health conscious, there are some that aren’t. It’s not a hashkafa issue. I’ve never seen a Rabbi jogging, but have seen rabbis walking etc

Rabbi chaim kanyevsky takes daily walks, so did the chazon ish, Rabbi wosner regularly went swimming, I’m sure USA gadolim also did excersize to maintain their health

People who work full time office jobs simply do not have time to exercise.

I think that for people who do not really have time to work out that its important to reduce the calories of the junk foods they eat/ limit sugary stuff. My doctor told me once that she has seen many cases where if a patient would drink diet soda only on a daily basis who used to drink sugary soda on a daily basis, the patient would often lose a bit of weight during the first month of doing so.

    Poster, you mean Yeled V’Yalda?

Vogue: it’s probably better not to drink so much diet soda either. Water is much better, and if you drink a lot, you will probably eat less and lose weight that way. Sadly, our culture focuses so much on food. Why, for example, do kiddushes have to be so elaborate when everyone goes home for a seudah?

    Hemish cooking is VERY unhealthy

Alot of it is bad parts of the animals and lots of oil and fat and unfortuantly healthy veggies are discouraged

    #1052559

I don’t know if they are discouraged. Nobody is forced to eat the junk cuisine, we just do because it tastes good. One thing, though: it has been written by many a health expert that it is good to diet six days and one day to go off it, so Shabbos alone shouldn’t destroy a week’s effort to control weight. But if one exercises, that should also help counter the effects of poor eating.

    Calories DO count on Shabbos,

    #1052561

Of course they count, but it won’t destroy a diet. I find myself actually eating less on Shabbos than during the week. By extending the time between courses with singing zemiros and divrei Torah, your food has time to digest and I tend to eat less

There’s an all mens frum gym called Better Health Studios in boro park.

    They have trainers and machines.

Thats the one my husband goes to.

Not familiar with Yeled V’yaldas gym though I know they have a great pool.

Lakewood has a great gym in Shoprite plaza with mens hours. I have relative who goes there every week without fail.

Theres no lack for Kosher Vyosher gyms, maybe some have a lack of interest 😉

I beg to differ. There is a lack of Kosher V’yosher gyms if you can’t find one in every frum neighborhood.

U always have the option of personal trainer coming to ur home, though its more pricey.

One of the trainers of Better Health Studios does home stops as early as 6:30 am, though my husband prefers going to the gym (to save $$$) and bec he does machines also.

The areas I mentioned are the ones I know about, I am sure there are more that I dont know about.

So you can always find an excuse, but really there are no excuses.

RebYidd23, money is usually an excuse. It makes perfect sense. Membership to the gym is an extra expense. So if someone says they dont go bec they cant afford it, well that makes sense.

There are ways to do exercise without costing a penny. But u have to be very determined and committed.

When people say “It’s not the money, ……..”

In those cases, it usually is the money. And its not unsual to be tight on money.

True, one can exercise without spending a penny, but it depends on what your goals are. For myself, I like what a gym has to offer, and I find it easier to push myself.

It costs time. Taking time to exercise means taking time off work, which means depriving ones family.

It all depends when you do it. Surely you are entitled to time for yourself. I get up very early, daven early and go workout before anyone else is awake. That doesn’t deprive them of me, or me of them. It depends how you schedule your time.

People who work can also find the time, depending on their jobs. Where there is a will, there is a way, as trite as that sounds.

Finding time? Unless you’re working 12 hour days, you likely come home home around 6 or 7. That gives you at least 4 hours to have supper, spend time with your kids and learn and exercise. Or if you prefer, get up earlier, daven at an earlier minyan, and then set aside time to exercise before going to work.

RebYidd23, if time is the issue, you don’t have to go to the gym every day.

My husband goes twice a week. One of those days is sunday which is a day off for him. Yes, tthe second day, he comes home from work, his gym bag is ready, he goes to the gym for an hour, hour and a half, comes home eats supper. He’s home for about half hour before he goes out to learn.

So that is bit more rushed. But it’s preserving ones health.

My husband admits that since he started gym he’s more agile.

I’d rather eat cake then do the gym but you gotta do what u gotta do.
