    If your mother is a dolt and your father is a dolt then you are most probably a dolt. Some people hold that only one parent has to be one but they are dolts.

    Its funny how the word dolt is getting a revival here. I wouldnt be surprised if most people under the age of 20 if not oldernever heard of the word.

    Rav avigdor miller quotes new testament that a jew who called another jew “reika” (empty of knowledge, aka an am ha’aretz) was subject to a stiff fine. Perhaps the moderators should fine people who call others dolts

    I wonder what the Chofetz Chaim says about how many lavs are being committed when name calling.

    Anyone know?

    And why this is being allowed in a yeshiva setting is unsettling.

    Mods, r u there?

    I’m with you.

    Now how are we supposed to teach young ones that name calling is improper when you have “adults” doing it? And within our fold. Now I understand better when learning that before Moshiach comes, knowing right from wrong becomes blurred…

    always

    clearly.

    BUT there’s no such concept of acceptable trolling in halacha when it entails being ???? on many issurim such as disparaging, ridiculing, name calling and degrading.

    There are other trollers on this site who did not resort to such low “standards” in their quest for many posts.

    Rabbosai,

    I was recently reading the biography of Rav Pam zt”l (whose yahrtzeit is 28 Menachem Ov), and I remembered that one of the many points that Rav Pam is remembered for was his great sensitivity with both the spoken and written word.

    Hamaivin yavin.

    With his great sensitivity I bet HE would have realized it was a joke. V’hameivin Yavin.

    that’s true BS, however he would’ve never said it, and you can’t put the onus on him that way because then anyone can go around saying “jokes” while at the same time hurting people you know you remind me of a story with another Bar, Bar Kamtza!

    Really??

    I don’t actually follow your cheshbon. What did you find funny about the story of bar kamtza? Which member of the story was trying to be funny?

    As for Rav Pam, I’m sure there are lots of things that I say that he would never say. My point was that he was sensitive to the nuances of the words used. The nuances are very important when communicating. I figure with his attention to detail he would have noticed the choice of slurs and its broad use of calling everyone a dolt and at the same time noone in particular.

    #1021601

    So if you shoot everyone with blank bullets, they should all know it’s a joke?

    By calling people names “as a joke” you are desensitizing yourself, and trying to desensitize others, to a certain standard of behavior. We need to be working on improving ourselves, not bringing ourselves down.

    I would like to clarify something:

    I was not following the thread and I don’t know who started it (nor do I care to know). The title of the thread caught my attention and I felt a response was appropriate.

    I never had the zechus to meet Rav Pam zt”l. However, based on what I’ve read and what I heard over the years, I believe that he would not have approved of the use of any derogatory word, even though “it’s just a joke.” Yes, Rav Pam picked up on nuances – but he still would not have approved of slurs or the like.

    Truth is, all of this is a reminder to myself – how careful am I about how I speak? Room for improvement.

    I don’t actually follow your cheshbon. What did you find funny about the story of bar kamtza? Which member of the story was trying to be funny?

    i didn’t find anything funny about the story of kamtza and bar kamtza (just like i don’t find anything funny about calling people dolts)

    My point about akmtza and bar kamtza is that people have feelings and even though you don’t think that they still do

    As for Rav Pam, I’m sure there are lots of things that I say that he would never say. My point was that he was sensitive to the nuances of the words used. The nuances are very important when communicating. I figure with his attention to detail he would have noticed the choice of slurs and its broad use of calling everyone a dolt and at the same time noone in particular.

    don’t give me that, it’s obvious that you only started calling everyone else dolts when always here got insulted, and the only reason you did that was to cover up.

    but anyways nothing I said will have any effect on you because like I stated before you’re a teenager and your brain still is undeveloped

    “New scientific discoveries have put a much different perspective on the understanding

    of adolescent behavior. Research now suggests that the human brain is still maturing during the

    adolescent years, with changes continuing into the early 20s. The immature brain of the

    teenage years may not only explain why adolescents are prone to make poor decisions, but it

    may also place teenagers at an elevated risk to the harmful effects of drugs.

    Work In Progress

    Advanced technologies in brain imaging have provided windows to the developing

    brain. Based on the pioneering work of Jay Giedd and colleagues at the National Institute of

    Mental Health in the United States, evidence is accumulating that the brain is not fully formed at

    puberty as earlier thought, but continues important maturation that is not complete until about

    age 24.”

    anyways I see you’re not man enough to apologize

    this is my last post on the topic

    Why is this thread continuing when it serves no purpose? It seems that one particular poster continues to want to insult people. Most of us come here to ask questions, talk, comment, discuss, learn and have a few laughs in the appropriate threads. I think this thread has run its course.

    @ursula

    You wanted to know the diff between pretending to shoot someone and pretending to insult them.

    I suppose the diff is that the consequences in the event you are wrong are much more severe in the case of the fake murder. If a couple of friends are sitting around chilling and one draws a gun I would advise ducking even though he is your friend and they are probably blanks, But if you are sitting around with friends chilling and one starts calling the others twits I would advise them not to go to their respective rooms crying because that really isn’t necessary and if indeed he was trying to insult them, they haven’t lost out by not being insulted.

    @emlf

    You assert that you dont care how this started. You also say we are acting differently than R’ Pam.

    A non caring attitude is not a problem as long as you stay out of it. If you dont care AND you get involved, well thats just disturbing.

    As for the diff between us and R’ Pam- Yeah, what of it? I’m not R’ Pam and you’re not R’ Pam so keep him out of it.

    @coffee addict

    You contend that it is obvious that I only espoused my slur to be a joke after everyone started getting all hypersensitive.

    At this point it may serve a purpose to repost that which was taken down by the mods: The question was asked “do ashkenazim take showers during the nine days?” One unnamed bar shattya responded “my hair is still wet from the shower. Yes I”m ashkenazi, you dolts.” Now the shrewdness of this mode of insult was mainly that it wasn’t aimed at anyone except those who would think that he would post a personal experiance which had nothing to do with the discussion- meaning if he was sfardi- but noone would think that and consequently noone was being called a dolt.

    You also contend that I will not apologize because as you stated I am a teenager.

    It sure is hard to respond to a made-up premise. YOU say that I’m a teenager and then you go researching my psychology based on your made up information. I don’t know. Sounds to me that you are just causing yourself undue stress.

    @minyan gal

    You contend that since the purpose of this thread is only to teach one poster not to insult people, therefore it is inappropriate and adorable seems to agree with you.

    First of all your premise is wrong and second of all your therefore is wrong. Your premise is wrong because you dont appreciate each jew and how important it is to straighten out each persons hashkafas. That is what this website is all about. Your therefore is wrong because even if you are right that each jew is not important and we should just let people be wrong, I dont understand why you have to try to stop people from helping the yochid.
