feet towards the door, i think. and i don’t know about the same day thing (never did that- even in my yeshivish days) but flush nails down the toilet.

nails are because of tumah. that i know for sure.

Goldie: I believe one should try to refrain from cutting fingernails and toenails on the same day because you do that on a dead person.

    The order is…(..tada..)

left hand: fourth, second, fifth, third, first finger (being the thumb)

then you do the right hand: second, fourth, first, third, fifth.

    Hope this helped!

    I see you skipped 2.

    2. The Mishna Brura says that one should not cut nails 3 days before Shabbos (and Y”T?) because then they will start to grow again on Shabbos. That would be Wednesday night/ Thursday. He also says one should not cut finger nails and toe nails on the same day. But if it is not possible to abide by both (e.g. it is Thursday and one needs to cut finger and toe nails) one should still not cut finger and toe nails on the same day but instead cut one of them on Thursday.

There is a specific order brought down in halacha for cutting nails. One should not do them in sequential order because that is how we cut nails during a tahara.

I’ve also heard about onion. I think it gets “tumah” or something if it’s cut up and sits overnight, unless if mixed with something else.

Fingernails should not be stepped on by a pregnant woman, so always flush them down the toilet.

Never heard about eggs…except that you shouldn’t eat them without salt…

I think that you can sleep in any direction, other than having your feet face east, and that is for married people. I heard this from somebody who asked a Rabbi, but it’s secondhand info (third now) so it’s best to ask if you really want to know…

1-noone said whether the egg issue was with raw or cooked eggs

2-nice answers, but is this halacha, minhag kaballa?

3-would be cool for others 2 add their own questions here SO JOIN IN!!!

wait – your nails grow whether or not you cut them.

GoldieLoxx, I would think that stepping on the nails in kabbalah or something, not halacha.

Ames: Probably same idea as something that was born/created on Shabbat might be muktzeh. You may have had no part in the creation process, but it is muktzeh anyways…

Jewess, it says this specifically in Gemara.

moish: I believe the nails begin regrowing on the third day. And that’s what they’re trying to prevent.

Woops, my bad. Gemara is Torah Sheba’al Peh (I think?) I guess that would make it Halacha…

Goldieloxx I would like to answer the questions regarding feet by the door and nails as I am on the Chevra Kadisah and can therefore answer corretly these questions

When we prepare the Mais during a Tahara, we clean the finger/toe nails in order but do not cut them as they are part of the person and the mais must be burried ‘whole’. Therefore so as not to do the same with the living as the dead, we do not clean/prepare nails in order and we do not if possible do fingers/toes on the same day.

As for sleeping with feet to the door this is because the oron with the mais is placed with feet towards the door. Again, so as not to do the same with the living and dead, we do not sleep/lie in this position.

Moish01 only flush nails down the toilet if they are well, well wrapped. Always ensure that nails are collected and disposed of in the correct manner as it is said that if not, one who has not collected his nails and disposed of them correctly will have to travel the world collect them all before ‘t’chias hamaisim. I am not sure how this translates into our understanding of today but I can say that I heard this in a Chevra Kadisha Shiur and yes it is kabalah orientated.

    2. I never heard that you cant cut both on the same day. You dont cut in order because that is how the cut the fingernails of a meis. And becuase of the tumah it can give a pregnant woman a miscarrige.

    4. As long as the bed doesnt look like it is going out the door then I think its all right, but Im not sure if its head first or feet first. The reason is also becuase of meis. (Just explaining the reasons for the people who dont know.)

We do head facing the door, ok. Also, if the door is on the side, and the bed is facing a wall and feet are closer than the head or vice versa, also ok. (this is what my family does)

Ames thank you for your very kind words but my thanks go to Hashem who has given me the opportunity and great z’chus to do this honorable work. It’s the greatest possible Mussor for me each time I perform a Tahara to see the value of life and appreciate every thing I have.

I think that any person who gives of himself or herself by working on the Chevra Kadisha, has earned a special place in Olam Haba. It is one of the hardest things to do, and the last kovod we can show someone before kevura. It is especially difficult when the tahara involves a young person or chalilah a baby. What strength such a person must have to be mekayeim this mitzvah. I truly applaud Nobody and anyone else who is moser nefesh to do this. Hashem will surely bless you and your loved ones in this zechus, and may you never need this chessed before Moshiach comes.

The cutting nail issue, as well as others mentioned, seem to have kabbalistic overtones, within the halacha. I was told if you do not remove the root end of the onion, you MAY leave it over. I never heard such stuff about hardboiled eggs. I wonder how much of this is halacha and how much is a minhag that many accept as halacha.

Nail cutting is a particularly strange inyan, because HASHEM makes the nails grow, so if it were a problem He could allow them NOT to grow on Shabbos. Clearly it is His action, not ours.

Goldieloxx we wrap the nails securely in order to dispose of them respectfully. We must always treat the whole body with respect.

And this, my friends, is why it is called a Chesed Shel Emes.

Also, the emes is that there is no person who ever wants it to be necessary to have this particular favor returned. For sure, it will never be returned by the person for whom it was performed. So there is no hidden agenda.

ames, I think the idea (at least with onions which is the same thing as eggs, no?) is that it doesn’t sit overnight on its own. Adding salt, is mixing it with something so it can sit overnight. btw, good time to ask this, were you talking about raw eggs in the first place?

To me, thats semi-sad. It means the person maintains a strong connection to Judaism, to the level of wanting a connection with a Rabbi. Thats a good thing – and probably means s/he is raising his/her kids to be very Jewish minded and makes it easier for them to come back into the fold.

Sad that she isn’t following Orthodoxy.

The problem with fingernails and 3 days before Shabbos is this (acc. to my understanding): Fingernails are constantly growing. However, in order that it should not be noticeably longer than when you cut it to a length that looks nice, the cutting should be within three days before Shabbos. It apparently takes three days to be noticeable, not to start growing.

Okay, about the ‘nails growing on Shabbos’ issue, the problem is that you are supposed to cut your nails for Kavod Shabbos. Therefore, to cut them on Wednesday when they will start growing again on Shabbos, does not accomplish the purpose. For this reason you are supposed to cut them only on Erev Shabbos.

It’s a sign for respect for ones parents. It is the biggest honor you can give a parent. Has nothing to do with Ayin Hara.
