I am currently in shidduchim, and often asked if I’d go for a “Tuna Bagel” kind of guy. What does that mean? Are there Tuna Bagel girls too? Someone clarify all this “fishy” business please.
January 13, 2010 6:01 am at 6:01 am #703740namelessMemberI’m not sure but I think it applies to someone who LOOKS very frum but is not…..
January 13, 2010 6:04 am at 6:04 am #703741bombmaniacParticipantit basicallyt means your average macher the guy who must be in the center of every situation…
January 13, 2010 6:53 am at 6:53 am #703742PosterMemberI never heard that expression before! That is really funny. To me a Tuna Bagel is what u get in Sam’s Bagel shop!
January 13, 2010 7:49 am at 7:49 am #703743myshadowMemberIn shidduchim it means usually chassidish family, he will wear the levush like bekecha (sp) and streimel but doesn’t really follow the other minhagim, like they might be working, college…
January 13, 2010 8:03 am at 8:03 am #703744GetzelParticipantit”s the opposite thing than a yeshivasher geek who is busy for how many weeks he didn”t take a shower and wash his clothing.
it commonly refers to a on the ball guy, a shtickel a macher the kind of guy who might be in the center of every situation.

Could you please use punctuation? It would make it easier to understand your post.
January 13, 2010 4:42 pm at 4:42 pm #703750lkwdbubbyMemberThe truth is a tuna beigel would best be adescribed as a Chasidishe bochur who learnt in Mir or a Yeshiva like that, inother words, it is a basically good Chasidishe bochur who has been in the Yeshivishe world. Manyof them, becuase they are more worldly do become machers. I would actually call them Heimish boys with Chssidishe Levush. By the way, does anyone know of any Shaddchonim who specialize in Tuna Beigels as I am in the market for one
January 13, 2010 5:02 pm at 5:02 pm #703751telegrokMemberThis is all very enlightening.
My neighbor’s son was described as a “fruitcake” – can someone explain that to me?
January 13, 2010 5:16 pm at 5:16 pm #703752plaidMemberFruitcake = honeydew…or…honeydo – I.E. a pushover
January 13, 2010 5:20 pm at 5:20 pm #703753YW Moderator-80Memberfruitcake: a person who is “nutty” or very silly.
January 13, 2010 5:27 pm at 5:27 pm #703754luv2hackMembera tuna bagel is someone who totally does not look chassidish, dresses in a cool way, haircut etc. someone who you would never be able to tell was chassidish but when he walks into a bagel store he asks for a tuna “beigel”. ie. he still has his VERY obvious chassidish “accent” although he’s covered everything else up.
Hope this helps 🙂
January 13, 2010 5:28 pm at 5:28 pm #703755joe joeMemberFruit cake means nutty. Tuna bagel usually refers to a boy with more cell phones and keys than he can handle.
January 13, 2010 5:34 pm at 5:34 pm #703756LAerMemberUm… hate to tell you all this, but calling someone a fruitcake is not a compliment. Usually means that the person’s a weirdo.
January 13, 2010 5:57 pm at 5:57 pm #703758A600KiloBearParticipantBS”D
Just make sure your tuna bagel or fruitcake is pas yisroel, kemach yoshon, with a reliable hashgocho.
The best place to find mehadrin fruitcakes in the US would have to be in Monsey, at Beck and Weiss’s Halb-Bakerei (half-bakery) on Saddle River Road.
January 13, 2010 6:03 pm at 6:03 pm #703759A600KiloBearParticipantBS”D
And of course fruitcakes are half baked by definition, but be careful of tuna bagels which are half baked as they are the types who run around with flashing lights when there is no emergency etc etc.
Incidentally, is a half baked fruitcake considered maachal ben Drusoy?
January 13, 2010 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm #703760musictomyearsMembermy teacher was a tuna beigal.
she dressed very very in style and up to date so we thought she was normal litvish lady…
until we saw her with her husband on shabbas!!!
he had long peyos
a streimal
and a bekeshe
on!!!!!while she was walking next to him with her bcbg 3 1/5 inch heels!!!!
January 13, 2010 6:37 pm at 6:37 pm #703762A600KiloBearParticipantBS”D
LOL her husband is (apparently) the tuna bagel.
EDITED
January 13, 2010 7:19 pm at 7:19 pm #703763bptParticipantEfshar –
This is just the tip of the iceberg; there are so many variables you need to establish:
Is it chuck tuna or solid white?
Is it a real bagel (boiled and then baked)or the “bread” kind?
Is lettuce and tomato included, or a .50 cent option?
Ettie is right; the shidduch crisis is our own doing. Talk about labels.. this one takes the cake!
January 13, 2010 7:33 pm at 7:33 pm #703764oomisParticipantI never ever heard of this term. I would have thought, had I not read the reast of the posts, that a “tuna bagel” kind of a guy, is a chilled out guy, who is not into fancy restaurants or clothes, and is satisfied with the minimum of anything. He is happy with a tuna bagel, doesn’t need the Barney’s suits or steak dinners, and doesn’t want that type of wife who is materialistic. Just goes to show you…
Calling someone a fruitcake is VERY uncomplimentary – means he is a nut job!
January 13, 2010 8:10 pm at 8:10 pm #703765positiveaynayimMemberWhat is the origin of this label? Why Tuna Bagel as opposed to anything else? It is hurtful to be mikabel that shidduchim can be so one dimensional (i.e. levush, macher, blackberry, cool haircut etc.)
When I red and deal with shidduchim the lingo that I’m involved with is:
Ehrlich, Ben/Bas Torah, refined, dignified, ba’al/ba’alas middos, balanced, bright, sensible, goal oriented, kind, giving, thought out, spiritual etc. etc.
Reminds me of the story of a Rov who was soliciting tzedaka from a wealthy Yid, and was refused entry to his home based on his mediocre levush. The Rov returned days later dressed exquisitely. He was granted entrace. When offered to sit down to a meal with the Ba’al habayis, he proceeded to put the food, very obviously, in his pockets. The gevir asked shockingly why the Rov was doing such a thing? The Rov responded “clearly it is my outer appearance that you respect”, “not the person that is wearing them”. “So, you are feeding my clothing, not me.”
January 13, 2010 8:37 pm at 8:37 pm #703766jphoneMemberIf he washes on the Tuna Bagel then you know he is not Chassidishe even outwardly.
January 13, 2010 9:57 pm at 9:57 pm #703767eli levParticipanttuna “bygel”; meaning he orders a tuna beigel & pronounces it bygel -chashidish for beigel! [as in goodBYE & not as in ebay], as a coilam bais instead of tseirei. no joke!!
January 13, 2010 9:57 pm at 9:57 pm #703768mybatMemberI thought this thread was really about food! Lol!!
😉 ….until I read it!
January 13, 2010 10:38 pm at 10:38 pm #703769BemusedParticipantDear lkwdbubby,
Please note that the “tuna beigel” term means different things to different people. You may not want to use the term when speaking with a Shadchan or when inquiring among your friends for a Shadchan, as you might give over a completely erroneous impression of the girl in question.
For your own sake, please realize that not everyone thinks of tuna beigel “as a Chasidishe bochur who learnt in Mir or a Yeshiva like that, in other words, it is a basically good Chasidishe bochur who has been in the Yeshivishe world”.
It is used to refer to multiple types, and you are best off describing what you are interested in without relying on labels.
Hatzlacha

Great story, and my Rov just told it to us during a shiur. People are very much into appearances, and it is not to our credit as a people that this has become the norm.
January 13, 2010 11:12 pm at 11:12 pm #703771potsandpansMemberwhen i read the question I was lol…because I thought everyone knew what it was!! this type is called tuna baigel…because the original pp that got labeled with this term are those chassidishe spitz guys, who dress in polo shirts, kakki/denim pants, trimmed beared during the week( in short not resembling chassidishe guys) and show up at a cafe and with full heavy boro park accent say “Ich Vill a Tuna Bigel”…
I know now pp label diff type of pp with this term: working chassidishe guys or chassidishe guys who are more outside the “box”….I have not heard this term being used to describe litvish boys as one commenter suggesed.
I know pp hate labels but these kind of boys are very comfortable with the way they dress, their life style, and chassidishe background…so its not a deragetory label because they look for tuna bigel girls, they don’t want fully chassidish.
January 14, 2010 12:30 am at 12:30 am #703772liddleyiddleMemberTUNA BEIGEL
[too-nuh bahyguhl,]
-noun
1. A Chasiddish rebel
2. Somebody who used to be a Chasid (and was often born that way), but is not one any longer.
January 14, 2010 1:36 am at 1:36 am #703773veryamusingMemberTo qualify as a certified Tuna Beigel you must be a guy who’s obviously chasidish but trims, wears a sweater, must have a blackberry and your peyos are either behind your ear or very small and tightly twirlled on your face. Otherwise your NOT a TB.
The general implication is that he’s enamored with the “velt” while remaining chasidish, which is wonderful if you asked me. better than stopping to wear the levush.
Incidentally, I don’t believe the term came from a guy ordering a “tuna beigel” in a store, because noone (even a tuna beigel) asks for a tuna beigel. You ask for a tuna sandwich or tuna on a beigel or a beigel with tuna …..
I have recently heard them called Teena beigel, which may be more accurate.
In any event, it is a derogatory term and would definately qualify for “michane shem lechaveiro” which carries a sever onesh. L’toeles, if you hear this about a person at least you’ll understand what it means.

January 14, 2010 3:23 am at 3:23 am #703775kollelboy123MemberA tuna Beigel in a couple of words is a Chassidishe guy that really does not want to be Chassidish and thinks he is cool
January 14, 2010 4:36 am at 4:36 am #703776hello99Participant“trimmed beared during the week”
and what about on Shabbos, does it grow back???
January 14, 2010 4:52 am at 4:52 am #703777efsharMemberWow! Thanks everyone for your very helpful responses. I guess the next time I’m asked that question, the answer will be NO THANK YOU!!! (personally i like cream cheese on an everything whole wheat bagel anyways) But, if so many people are asking me this does that make me a girl Tuna bEIgel? So far it sounds like it only applies to guys….
January 14, 2010 10:50 am at 10:50 am #703779EttieMemberMaybe, really skinny girls should be called whole wheat bagels?!?
In fact, in my humble opinion, we should stop calling people by names and only use food recognizable names. Let’s face it, in our days, when middos have gone down the drain we shouldn’t even pretend anymore.
So far, there are 37 comments related to who is a tuna bagel who isn’t and if a tuna bagel is a good thing or not! What happened to is he a baal middos? Will he treat his wife properly? Is she interested in putting in 150% of herself to make her marriage work and her husband happy???
January 14, 2010 2:38 pm at 2:38 pm #703780jphoneMemberIs a garlic bagel a reference to hungarians? an everything bagel the child of a syrian married to a litvak? is a plain bagel a reference to someone with an empty head?
January 14, 2010 3:48 pm at 3:48 pm #703781PosterMemberI am sooooo in the mood of a REAL tuna bagel….
January 14, 2010 9:03 pm at 9:03 pm #703782shindyMemberI find this post very cute to read, but ettie is right, enough with the labels. Also, if food is used to nickname people it detracts from it’s chashivus and the true matanah it is from Hashem that he gives us food to eat.
January 14, 2010 11:05 pm at 11:05 pm #703783A600KiloBearParticipantBS”D
If there is no label, how am I to know how many hechsherim my tuna bagel has and whether it is hamoitzi or mezoinois?
January 14, 2010 11:07 pm at 11:07 pm #703784boysmomParticipantWhen I was in shidduchim for my son people used to use the word “balabatish” a lot. I found that if I asked 5 people what balabatish means I got 5 different answers. I found that the best thing to do with labels is to ask the user to define the term. Like this you will know what you’re talking about.
January 14, 2010 11:52 pm at 11:52 pm #703785oomisParticipantI’m with Shindy on this one.
January 15, 2010 2:01 am at 2:01 am #703787positiveaynayimMemberIt’s just not comprehensible that we, a Memleches Kohanim V’Goi Kadosh, could stoop to such shallowness as to a label like this.
We have more self worth then this. We are each a tzelem elokim–this should not be tolerated by anyone, even those that may take pride in it’s meaning. And I, for better or worse, don’t find this cute–it’s pathetic.
January 17, 2010 6:28 pm at 6:28 pm #703788pookieMemberits simply a guy who wears an izod polo shirt and has a blackberry
January 17, 2010 7:39 pm at 7:39 pm #703789PhyllisMemberOn this thread alone, tuna bagel has been translated into diff things. You want your info to come out as stright forward as possible, say things in simple English.
