golfer: A Heimish Yid, at minimum, hold from Daas Torah and mesorah. It may mean much more than that much, but that is a fundamental across the board.

As an aside, it is a hemishe minhag that the fathers walk the choson and the mothers walk the kallah to the chupa. Though a minority eschew that.

Golfer you actually wrote it very very well, yes Heimish is not a bad thing at all i love heimish yeshivish, heimish chasidish, or heimish modern, But the other heimish ALONE is not enough, a cool heimish person that drives a SUV and has long peyos down behind his ears with sunglasses etc.. that you may want to call a TUNA BEIGEl, Heimish can be the most eidil nice people (Tuna beigels may also be but are diffrent)

Shticky, you left out my comparison to the word landsman, so don’t be too offended about not being considered heimish by others. Everyone feels closer to their own kind, doesn’t mean everybody else is bad, just different. So smile and listen out for moshiach…

I guess we’ll have to wait until Moshiach to know what Heimishe really means…

On a side note, where does the term ‘Tuna Beigel’ originate from?

Tuna Beigel is someone who looks frum , but doesnt act that way

Greasy I cant really descrobe, but it has something to do with being “too frum” or something like that

I’ve stayed away from this thread for years, but now will put in my observation.

From the Yekke side of my family….
Heimish is ‘real’ unpolished, not putting in airs or false sophistication. A taste of ‘real’ life where a momma raising multiple children without servants doesn’t worry if the kugel has a few well done crusty edges and doesn’t look like a picture in Gourmet magazine.
The Heimish bakery has things that taste good, not look good without taam.

Heimish people do and make, not have their servants do it for them and let dinner guests rave about the the hostess’ cooking.

How do I get rid of this “Shadchan List ” thread that keeps popping up? It’s really annoying!

    “in between chasidish and yeshivish”

That may make you chashivish (which I think means a little bit important) or Yasidish, which may you a member of the Yazidis in which case I dont think either someone who is chassidish, or yeshivish would be interested.
