unctuous, containing a lot of grease?

What is the context? there have been several different slang uses for this word, too.

    A.literally-too “oisge’arbit” and “ois’gecheshboned”to take a shower regularly.

B.generally–AN UNKIND AND HIGHLY OFFENSIVE word to describe fine and ehrlich… very, very yeshivish bochurim.

To the guys who look shlumpy–remember kavod hatorah!

To the people who label other human beings as “greasy”–WORK ON YOUR MIDAH OF ANIVUS AND AHAVAS HA’BRIOS.

    p.s. by me caps aren’t “shouts”–just emphasis.

Were you called greasy or somone else? If you were called I dont blame you for not knowing. But anyways greasy is a term used to describe a person that is just a peice of grease, from head to toe… You can see the grease dripping out of him mixed with dandruff and a bad oder.

theres just so much 2 b thankful 4:

It’s like a “Harry.” I have asked countless people (even started a thread in the CR) and no one can give me a clear cut answer. They all say “when you see one, you know.”

    #711505

dunno- its not like a Harry.

Its a guy with globs of messy payos sticking out behind his ears, who cant speak a sentence without mixing in 90% yeshivish shprach, who is not really down to earth. (he may be from a different planet)

I dont know why girls are never called greasy though…

I’m not saying it means a Harry. I’m saying that the way people can’t describe Harry is the same way they can’t describe greasy.

dunno – I disagree with you, A harry and a greasy person are 2 diffrent things. A harry is just not the typical. A greasy person is just somone thats greasy!

    Lets make it pashut…

Greasy usually means the guys skin or hair is greasy and oily, which is usually because of lack of showering. Usually an ultra masmid yeshivish guy who has “no time” to shower will get the term greasy. He will look like and probably smell like he hasnt showered in a number of days. He will look spaced out and probably will be lost in thought thinking about some Reb Baruch Ber on a shvere sugya….

His English will be mostly Yeshivishe Shprach with a few mispronounced English words thrown in for good measure. He may have poor posture and stand hunched over.

A Harry is usually a term for someone who isnt “with the program” his mode of dress, and the way he acts and the things he says are just off. Its often referring to a modern guy who became Yeshivish but didnt make the transition “smoothly.” Or to a Yeshivish guy from out of town who hasnt properly made the transition to typical Yeshivish. For example its a harry thing for a guy to walk around with a backpack or napsack or certain types of hats…

A harry is someone who is ‘American’ he eats Manischevitz matzos on pesach and does what is typical.. This term my mother HATES!They are often teh people who say ‘oh’ as apposed to ‘oy’ for a choilem!

greasy people are temimusdik learning people. They have dandruff on their shoulders and their hats are a shtickel light from too much wear.. hard to define!

That’s funny cuz I thought a Harry is someone who is very typical, very standard (as in “a regular Harry”)!

Where do you find all of these (old) threads?!? (Almost) Everytime someone mentions a thread you post the link.

Thank you! (it always helps me figure out what everyone is trying to figure out)

Would I be opening up a huge can of worms if I were to mention that “oh” is the acknowledged as correct by most of world Jewry including Ashkenazim (the Yekke AU, and Litvish EY are derivations.) Lest anyone accuse me of being “modern,” R’ Belsky pronounces a cholam that way, and R’ Yaakov Kamenecki said that it is correct but he already developed the “bad habit.”

Hm, so that’s what greasy means; I had it backwards.

So, whats the name for those yeshivas that are barely bigger than a house, don’t hold their bochrim to any specific standards, aren’t MO, but aren’t real yeshivas, yet they call themselves yeshivas?

There has to be a term for what I’m talking about. How else would we differentiate between those and [for lack of a better term] real yeshivas?

To clarify some things: The “greasy” guy isn’t the biggest masmid. The greasy Yeshivish guys are just those that have given up interacting with the world in general. They speak in mumbled sentences, wear the same clothes all week, and rarely shower. They may be smart and talmidei chachomim, but not necessarily. Most Yeshivish masmidim I know are well respected and dress normally.

Thanks. I saw that term on the mesivta thread and was wondering what it meant…
