If an odom godol suggested this, rather than a commercial outfit, I’d say it’s worth considering.

I don’t think sadness is a suitable gift.

The Geula process has already started unfoldiNg. Things have really picked up this year. Moshiach will be here by then so if I would afford it id buy him a valuable becher he can donate to be used towards the beis Hamikdash or keilim.

What about those families where only one person makes kiddush (i.e. the father) ?

Maybe we should say Al Naharos Bavel instead of Shir Hamaalos, I mean that tis where the passuk of Im Eshkacheich is found.

During the Three Weeks on weekdays we do say Al Naharos Bavel instead of Shir Hamaalos.

joseph: I was talking about on Shabbos. I mean if the kos says “Im eshkochech…”.

BTW, some of us say Al Nahoros Bavel on any weekday that we say tachnun, not just during the three weeks.

Nothing quite like a for-profit enterprise telling everyone that their product is the best gift.

Also, who wrote that ad? It can’t seem to decide if it’s aimed at bar mitzva boys or chosons. They might benefit from an editor instead of shifting between the two without warning.

It’s a nice cute marketing ploy, but not much else. I don’t think anyone will react with sadness towards the fact that a becher they know will be smashed gets smashed and there won’t be any super attachment to it in the first place. Even if that were the case, It would still not affect his thoughts about the Mikdash, Only his Becher. It’s not a problem, It’s just not any better or worse than any other Becher

What keeps the Becher from breaking early? I’ve broken two glass bechers in the past year.

Regarding their idea that the glass breaking doesn’t really hold any significance anymore, I actually see their point. My Rav actually does the following: at many weddings now, they sing Im Eshkachaich at the chuppah, before breaking the glass. He has the chosson break the glass while it is still being sung. That way, people don’t yell mazal tov right when the glass is broken. They yell it after the singing is finished.

They say “thousands of kiddush’s”. Besides for their grammar being off, their numbers are off as well. Let’s say he gets married at 23, so 10 years between the bar mitzvah and the wedding. There are about 52 weeks in a year (using the solar calendar is easier, as it’s pretty constant, and you don’t have to account for the extra Adar). That’s 104 Shabbos meals, so 104 times making kiddush. Another 12 days of Yom Tov (4 Pesach, 2 Sukkos, 2 Shemini Atzeres, 2 Shavuos, and 2 Rosh Hashanah) adds 24, for a total of 128. That’s assuming (unrealistically) that all the days of Yom Tov don’t fall out on Shabbos.
As adocs pointed out, a teenager isn’t making kiddush most of the time anyway – the father is. But let’s assume that this boy is making his own kiddush every single time. Over 10 years, that’s 1,280 times. Hardly the “thousands” they advertise.

In order to take care of the problem of “what if the becher breaks early?” I am sure that the manufacturers would recommend buying several backups. ($90 a pop for something with a $5 value)
