Hello all!
I am a bit outraged at the idea that I am not allowed to drive. My husband and I live in oot. If I can’t drive, how am I supposed to drive my husband to work? (He has severe epilepsy and cannot get a license, yes, medication helps, but they only reduce the seizurs…hoping that ins. covers the surgery, but i digress.) How am I supposed to get the many bags of groceries home? It is very difficult to schlep the old lady cart on Metro. How do I go out to NoVa to see my sick Gramps? My car is mostly for errands… i am not about to give it up because someone says it isnt decent. What’s not decent about driving a disabled man to work and night kollel?
January 21, 2011 3:40 pm at 3:40 pm #730518WolfishMusingsParticipantWhere do you live that you are not allowed to drive? And who, specifically, is not allowing you to drive (and under what sanctions)?

January 21, 2011 4:06 pm at 4:06 pm #730523WolfishMusingsParticipantAnd, more importantly, who told you that you could not drive *in your circumstances*, for what reasons, and, again, under what sanctions?

January 21, 2011 4:14 pm at 4:14 pm #730525rollerskatesMemberI’ll be honest, no one ever told me that I should not drive, but I read some comments on another page, and the idea of ladies driving being banned grinds my gears. OOT- means Out of Town. Without revealing too much, I live in the DC area.

January 21, 2011 4:25 pm at 4:25 pm #730529always hereParticipantwe have a cousin in Beitar Ilit who drives, altho’ in that community her children would be kicked out of yeshiva if it was known. She puts on huge sunglasses, but I still don’t know how she gets away with it. we drove to Mama Ruchel’s kever together so I know this is a fact.

January 21, 2011 4:50 pm at 4:50 pm #730533Avram in MDParticipantrollerskates,
Why not pose your question to your rav in the DC area?
BTW – Why on earth would you need to use the Metro to get to a grocery store?

Maybe you are referring to E”Y where in some chareidi communities it is considered unacceptable for woman to drive. I don’t think people in America feel that way.
January 22, 2011 11:42 pm at 11:42 pm #730545Bed-StuyParticipantDerech: In Williamsburg and other places in America they have the same minhug as in E”Y.

I didnt bother reading that one past the *original* heading.
The proving Judaism thread I dont have a problem w because some people actually have questions on Judaism. If the OP stated that (s)he is considering going off because (s)he doesnt have concrete proof about Mussar Seforim than I may question it, but I think the OP is just trying to get a conversation going.
January 23, 2011 1:03 am at 1:03 am #730547popa_bar_abbaParticipantI just opened this thread for the first time.
Good one rollerskate, whoever you are.
January 23, 2011 2:07 am at 2:07 am #730548metrodriverMemberRollerskates; Seriously. You should ask the Rav/Dayan of your community. Under the circumstances that you describe, (If true.) you should get an official “Heter”. (Dispensation.) Some people (in the Monsey area, for example.) where public transportation is not as accessible as in Brooklyn, got an official Heter from the Dayyanim.
