I think the rabbi of my shul is one of the biggest Gedolim. My neighbor thinks his Conservative rabbi is a big Godol.
What makes someone a Godol Hador?

why did you change from Godol to Gedol and back to Godol?
June 5, 2012 1:54 am at 1:54 am #878110Sam2ParticipantUnclear. I once heard someone say that the Gedolim are made by having followers who hold by them and not necessarily by the biggest Talmidei Chachamim. There are no criteria for being a “Godol”. Nor is there any Halachic Nafka Minah for being a “Godol”, so I’m not sure that a definition is necessary or relevant. It’s one of those “you know it when you see it” things.
June 5, 2012 3:31 am at 3:31 am #878111HaLeiViParticipantThe Jewish media decides. They get to choose who is Maran Harav, Posek Hador, Gadol Hador, Rabbi, Rebbe, Rebbi, Reb, and R’. They even get to choose who is the Rebbe D’… or Mi…
June 5, 2012 3:56 am at 3:56 am #878112147ParticipantUntil Nisson 27, 2001, Rav Avigdor Miller ZTKLLH’H was the Godol haDor.
Following that very sad day, Rav Ovadiah Yosef shlita is the Godol haDor. May we be Zochim to his guidance & leadership for decades to come.

June 5, 2012 4:14 am at 4:14 am #878114ZeesKiteParticipantOne (gentile) reporter asked this very question to Maran Rav Moshe Feinstein Zatza”l. He answered that if one askes a Rabbi a question and he’s satisfied with the answer, he’ll come back. When a lot of people are satisfied, more come back.

Acceptance by the gedolim of the previous dor.

Godol is with a komatz. Gedolim is with a sh’va.

That is a great answer, especially because it came from a true gadol hador.
June 5, 2012 6:55 am at 6:55 am #878117pcozMemberAccording to Rb Wolbe z”l everyone is part gadol and you can’t grow to be a gadol until you recognise that part of you which is already a gadol because if you’re not in the ballgame you can’t score

June 5, 2012 3:27 pm at 3:27 pm #878120NechomahParticipantThere will be other posts going up before this that I can’t see but I want to say to ZK that I’m not sure about your answer 100% because it almost sounds like going around to different rabbonim to be “satisfied” with the answer. I know that’s not what you intended but that’s what it sounds like to me.
In my opinion, what determines who is a godol is who goes to this person and how many shailos he is asked. If a person answers questions for the people of his shul and no one outside that sphere, then he’s a great LOR, but not more than that. If he answers questions from other rabbonim and people on a wide scale, then that qualifies more as a godol.
June 5, 2012 6:52 pm at 6:52 pm #878122millouseMemberI determine who I consider a Gadol.
