There used to be posters from Australia and I know there are several from Israel. Are there any current posters from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Russia, Hong Kong or elsewhere in Europe like Antwerp, Brussels, Vienna, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Spain, Italy, Ireland etc?

I thought that after the American and British posters thread I’d ask if there are posters from any other countries.

    Serious answers please.

The original name for Canada, dreamed up by a parliamentary committee in London, was “Cold North Dominion,” but that waas too long, so they abbreviated it C.N.D. The King’s Royal Governor presented the new name to the inhabitants, and they didn’t say a word. Just looked at him.

“Well, what do you think?” asked the Royal Governor?

“C., eh?” said the first fellow, and just looked at the Governor.

“N., eh?” says the second guy.

“D., eh?” says a third one. Then silence.

“Hey,” says the Governor. “I like that. It’s a heck of a lot easier to pronounce when you spell it that way.”

So that’s how Canada got its name.

There are countries besides the US and UK?

    #853534

    * Born and grown up in The Netherlands.

    * Spent 1 year in the Czech Republic.

    * Spent 6-7 months in Switzerland altogether on vacations.

    * Spent 6 years in Eretz Yisroel.

    * Spent almost 1 year by now in the UK.

To complete the list, let’s add countries visited:

Germany, Belgium, Poland, Italy, Austria, France, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein

Nothing really exotic… Never crossed to ‘your’ side of the Atlantic yet, but I sure intend to do so some day. Not planning to visit the NY/NJ area though – I’m thinking of the central/western areas, like Colorado, Utah, Montana, Washington state, Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon… those are the areas that look nice. Couldn’t care less about NY/NJ, Florida, California and the rest of the typical ‘tourist’ states.

@Avi K – maybe, some day, I’ll settle somewhere for longer. (Not in a settlement though.) Hopefully that somewhere will be E”Y. Until then, I try to make the best of it. 🙂

@Avi K – so now you’re a specialist on the UK as well?

If we’re in such a terrible state, would you mind explaining why violence here is so low that police officers do not carry firearms?

Would you care to explain why in the UK employees have a lot more rights than in the US?

Would you care to explain exactly how the UK health care system is inferior to the US – or Israeli – one? Here, everyone is entitled to free care automatically by virtue of being resident in the UK (you don’t even need to be a citizen – just legally resident).

Ken Zayn is a European, United Kingdomite, British English Jew. Or actually a Jewish English British UKite European. (What is the correct term for a citizen of the United Kingdom? I dont think there is one.)

kenzayn, with a sub like Urs you can only be British

ps: the correct term would start with n and end with ormal!

    #853555

@Ken Zayn – since United Kingdom and Great Britain are synonyms (AFAIK), it would be Briton.

Yep – just confirmed: the official name of the UK is:

“United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”

Thus, a person from that country would be either a Briton – or a Northern Irishman, I would guess, but I may be incorrect there, as Wikipedia lists this:

    Demonym: British or Briton

Without leaving anything separate for the Northern Irish…

@TCG Thanks for clearing that up for me. It only occurred to me as I was writing it. I suppose just as Americans come from the United states of america but although they can either say they are from the united states or from america even though they are americans but not united statesians, the same is true of UK residents who are from the united kingdom of great britain and ireland but are british or irish but not united kingdomists.

Now clear this one up: you are not a real gatesheader as you are not british born. Nor are you a real chossid otherwise you would not live in gateshead. So what’s pshat in the (real) chassidishe gatesheader?
