Brony – I saw a famous actor once. My friend said he was. But I can’t remember the name though.
I would like to see Obama someday, and make the bracha on seeing a king.

If you were to see Obama you say the bracha without Hashems name.

WIY: I thought Rabbi Yosef said to say it.

You’ll be able to say it when he changes term limits and makes a state of emergency.

The Steipler, Satmar Rav (Reb Yoel) and Shu”t Beer Moshe pasken otherwise. If you are a sefardi and he is your posek you may follow him otherwise you should do as the Ashkenazi poskim pasken.
So, I don’t get why he isn’t considered a king? He’s way more important than Queen Elizabeth. Do we say the bracha with Shem UMalchus upon seeing her?

???? ?????? ????? ????
Which begets the question, why don’t we make this brocha on a Bas Mitzva girl?
April 16, 2013 6:11 pm at 6:11 pm #948373ChortkovParticipantR’ Yackov Galinsky spoke in my shul about 3 years ago, and he said a story about the Steipler (I think), who said “Shelo Osani Carter” when Jimmy Carter came to Israel. I don’t remember why or when. But when Bush came to Israel, R’ Yackov Galinsky (who davens in the same shul as R’ Chaim Kanievsky) went over to R’ Chaim Kanievsky and said “Shelo Osani Bush”, and R’ Chaim supposedly said “Omein”.

April 16, 2013 6:42 pm at 6:42 pm #948376DaMosheParticipantYou only say the bracha on a king who has absolute power – such as the power to sentence someone to death on a whim. Since Obama does not have that power, you don’t say that bracha.
The proper bracha should be, “May God bless and keep Obama… far away from us!”
April 16, 2013 6:50 pm at 6:50 pm #948377playtimeMemberDaMoshe- Obama can kill anyone in a whim.
Marshal Law is sanctioned by the ‘Necessary and Proper’ clause in the Constitution.
He can also spare a life in a whim with a pardon.
The guy is the most powerful guy in the Planet. More that any King around today. Don’t let the “Mr. President” fool you
April 16, 2013 6:57 pm at 6:57 pm #948378shazamParticipantOK, how about an objective discussion.
On the one hand, you only make a beracha shecholak mechevodo l’basar v’dam with Shem and Malchus on seeing a non-Jewish king who has the power to execute.
On the other hand, the US President – as Commander in Chief – has the power to unilaterally approve the killing of enemy combatants. This President (and most of his predecessors) has exercised that power.
Those are the facts. How about a rational, objective, non-political discussion of the Hallacha?
April 16, 2013 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm #948379swietMemberDaMoshe: In that case you certainly should make no brocho on the Queen of England, who has even less power than the POTUS.

Some hold that the ability to go to war, and the ability to pardon, are sufficient to make the bracha.
April 16, 2013 10:59 pm at 10:59 pm #948382Torah613TorahParticipantShazam: “On the one hand, you only make a beracha shecholak mechevodo l’basar v’dam with Shem and Malchus on seeing a non-Jewish king who has the power to execute.”
Thank you. In that case, why does anyone hold that the bracha shouldn’t be made with Shem & Malchus?
Daas Yochid: So would you say the bracha?
April 17, 2013 1:16 am at 1:16 am #948383Sam2ParticipantTorah: Because Obama doesn’t quite have the power to execute any American citizen without due process of law. Also, it could be that because he can’t extend his reign forever that the Brachah wouldn’t be made.

just the first and last posts,
then they post.
So you have a bunch of redundant miscommunication.
Ah, the coffee room.

April 17, 2013 3:49 am at 3:49 am #948389Veltz MeshugenerMemberYou should def. make a pretty awesome bracha. In the olden days kings could only kill people who were nearby or locked up or something. The president can kill almost anyone almost anywhere.
April 17, 2013 3:57 am at 3:57 am #948390☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantT613, I would ask a shailah, but I think the answer would be yes.
Talmud, there was a lot of down time between posts.

I suppose that’s directed at me. To be fair, I wasn’t even reading the last post. Someone told me to post that, and I just did.

Ever hear of drones?
April 17, 2013 9:01 am at 9:01 am #948394nishtdayngesheftParticipantThis ???? was already paskened by the Rov in Fiddler on the Roof.
April 17, 2013 11:41 am at 11:41 am #948395Torah613TorahParticipantThe drones issue is interesting. DY – IYH I’ll ask a Rav.
Thanks to all the responses.
April 17, 2013 12:52 pm at 12:52 pm #948396ChortkovParticipantGit Meshige – There is a difference between an “urban legend” and hearing a story firsthand from the guy who did it. Whether you choose to believe HIM (R’ Yackov Galinsky Shlit”a) or ME (EDITED) is up to YOU.
April 17, 2013 4:41 pm at 4:41 pm #948397OneDayAtAtimeMemberMy grandfather z’l related to me that as a child he made a brocho upon seeing the German Kaiser (obviously in friendlier times to the Jews). I do not remember what brocho he told me he made.
Additionally at the KAJ shuls in Washington Heights and Monsey the “Hanosen Teshua” tephilla is said every shabbos specifically mentioning “Adonienu Hapresident Shel Artzos Habris Yorum Hudo”
Politics aside, we must be greatful that we live in a country that allows us to openly practice our religion.
April 24, 2013 1:49 am at 1:49 am #948400rebdonielMemberThe braha for Obama should be the czar’s blessing from Fiddler on the Roof.
April 25, 2013 9:23 pm at 9:23 pm #948403AshParticipantWhen the Queen visited Gateshead in 2002, the previous Gateshead Rov paskened you do make the brochoh.
