I have a younger sister who’s in a Beis Yaakov seminary in Brooklyn. I was talking to her over the weekend, and she told me that one of her teachers said “It’s important to marry a talmud chochom. That means someone who sets aside time to learn every day. Not daf yomi – that doesn’t count. Real, serious, learning.”

Excuse me? Daf yomi doesn’t count as learning? What are these people teaching?

If financially possible full time sitting and learning is a beautiful way to start out marriage.

But not everyone’s cut out for it– requires a lot of discipline in learning and not getting distracted during the zmans definitely encouraging everyone to do the same thing is quite ridiculous because we aren’t all the same at all!!!!!!!!!!

people can be normal frum professionals as well. There is no one right way to live life

I think (maybe) what the teacher meant was that sometimes men think that they can go to a Daf Yomi and they have fulfilled their chiyuv of limud torah instead of learning whenever they have a chance (whatever that means to each person)

Feif un – I’ve heard worse. MUCH worse.

How about a teacher asking the class, “How many of you have fathers still in kollel? Raise your hands.” She went on to say that anyone in Kollel is like shevet Levi, Hashem takes care of their parnasa, yada yada yada. Of course the implication is that those of us whose fathers were not in kollel, are Not like shevet Levi and Hashem doesn’t care about their parnasa unless supporting Talmidei Chachamim (it was even worse but I’ve forgotten the specifics by now.)

There is nothing wrong with daf yomi, What the teacher was reffering to was the people thst “Do the Daf” – which is going to the nightly daf shuir and have the snack and coffe, and are texting and who knows what, and thats it they do the rest of the day, all they are doing it is abi tzum yotzea zien!

Perhaps the real question is not WHAT is being taught, rather WHO is doing the teaching. Do we have qualified mechanchim in both boys and girls education? What makes them qualified? Who determined those qualifications? Answering these questions goes a long way to determining if an “institution” (I use that word with all its implications) is for you.

Having qualified teachers is generally not an issue in seminary. Educated teachers is another story.

real-brisker, how do you know what the teacher was referring to? She said to marry someone who learns every day – not counting daf yomi. There are plenty of kollel guys who shmuz, text, and do who knows what else during seder every day. Of course, they collect a kollel check for it also.

    feif:

    Huh?

Why are you taking this to mean that daf yomi is not learning, instead of taking it to mean that daf yomi is not as serious as learning two or three hours a day?

From listening to a Daf shiur one won’t ever become a Talmid Chacham (especially the way many listen, I’ve attended various Daf shiurim so I can attest to how little most listen).

This teacher is talking about sitting and learning seriously for a few hours and looking up some Rishonim and Achronim, not just some passive Daf shiur.

Pascha. I wasn’t referring to a phd in education when I said qualified teacher. Qualified as in proper hashkafa etc.

fief un – It is obvious that the teacher is reffering to people that just “Do The Daf” and yes you are right she is also reffering to the people that “Do Kollel” that you described that are in kollel and shmuzing texting during seder etc. This is not what a serious person is about, Its pushet that there is nothing wrong with daf yomi – A Person could spend first and second seder on daf yomi, This is ot what the teacher was talking about, There is no such thing that if somone leanrs daf yomi he must be a am haretz! As you stated in your question real, serious learning daf yomi is not a stirah to serious learning.
