Lung disease from smoking takes a while to develop. It’s very unlikely to get lung cancer or emphysema in the first few years at least.
So at what age is it appropriate to start smoking since you’re highly unlikely to get lung disease before you die of something else anyway?

March 2, 2017 6:30 pm at 6:30 pm #1222825👑RebYidd23ParticipantYou wait until everyone else is old enough that your secondhand smoke won’t cause lung cancer.
March 2, 2017 6:32 pm at 6:32 pm #1222826iacisrmmaParticipantThe best way to quit smoking is never to start!

March 2, 2017 6:46 pm at 6:46 pm #1222829Moshe1994ParticipantI’d say 6 years old, give them a cigarette and tell them to take a deep puff… I guarantee they will never smoke again their entire life. 🙂
March 2, 2017 6:49 pm at 6:49 pm #1222830Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantAt the age of 119, your body is probably not very strong, and while normally one smoke won’t kill anyone, if a 119-year old who has never smoked smarts smoking, I would imagine it could be quite dangerous. It’s probably safer to start at 70 or 75 than at 119 (especially since the average life span for men is only around 79, I think).
If you really have to smoke, you should probably do what one person I know does – he only smokes once a week, on Motzei Shabbos, because he says you can’t get addicted from smoking once a week.
But best of course is not to smoke at all!
March 2, 2017 6:57 pm at 6:57 pm #1222831MenoParticipantMoshe1994,
I had a Rebbe who’s father gave him a cigar when he was little in the hopes that he would hate it and never smoke again. He actually ended up enjoying it, though I don’t think he ended up smoking regularly.
March 2, 2017 7:11 pm at 7:11 pm #1222832👑RebYidd23ParticipantIf you want to try that trick, don’t use nicotine.
March 2, 2017 7:18 pm at 7:18 pm #1222833MenoParticipantAre there cigarettes without nicotine?
March 2, 2017 7:21 pm at 7:21 pm #1222834HealthParticipantPBA -“What age to start smoking?”
Start as soon as possible!
The sooner you start, the better it is for me!
March 2, 2017 9:00 pm at 9:00 pm #1222835I. M. ShluffinParticipantAre you a doctor or a funeral director?
March 2, 2017 9:14 pm at 9:14 pm #1222836MenoParticipant“Are you a doctor or a funeral director?”
If he’s a doctor that sounds extremely unethical.
I’m not sure there’s any formal code of ethics for funeral directors
March 2, 2017 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm #1222837Moshe1994Participant@ Meno I said that you should tell them to take a “Deep” puff, by doing that it significantly reduces the chance they will like it. (btw I wasn’t being serious)
March 2, 2017 10:43 pm at 10:43 pm #1222838☢️ Rand0m3x 🎲ParticipantThat guy would probably not experience
withdrawal if he stopped his weekly smoke.

March 3, 2017 1:40 am at 1:40 am #1222840yehudayonaParticipantWikipedia has a list of the 100 verified oldest people. Only one lived to be over 120: Jeanne Calment, 122 years 164 days. The woman in the #2 spot lived to be over 119. After that, nobody even hit 118, though there are a few still in the running. So I think it’s safe to start smoking on your 119th birthday, since it seems unlikely you’ll be there to celebrate.
March 3, 2017 1:59 am at 1:59 am #1222841Lilmod UlelamaidParticipant“So I think it’s safe to start smoking on your 119th birthday, since it seems unlikely you’ll be there to celebrate.”
But only for men. Apparently it’s only men who are limited to 120 years and not women. Maybe that’s why many people write ‘???? for women instead of ????.
Personally, I never understood why we are putting limits on anyone’s age whether male or female. Does it actually say anywhere that a man can’t live past 120? As far as I know it doesn’t, so why limit their lifespan?
March 3, 2017 3:49 am at 3:49 am #1222842Moshe1994ParticipantThe origin of the Minhag to say “you should live to 120!” Was because Moshe Rabbeinu lived till 120.
March 3, 2017 10:22 am at 10:22 am #1222843Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI know but that doesn’t really answer my question.
March 3, 2017 9:43 pm at 9:43 pm #1222844rebshidduchParticipantpopa, never.

I’m in the medical field. Who are you to determine what’s considered ethical or not?!?
March 5, 2017 4:29 pm at 4:29 pm #1222847👑RebYidd23ParticipantEvery member of society has a part in deciding what’s ethical.

That’s true, but there is a Toldah called medical ethics!
It’s even given in college.
Did you ever go to college?
March 5, 2017 8:19 pm at 8:19 pm #1222849MenoParticipantI went to college so I’ll respond (though I’m not sure what this has to do with college).
Health,
Do you think it’s consistent with the Code of Medical Ethics for a professional in the medical field to suggest that a person should do something that is detrimental to his own health in order that the medical professional should benefit?
A simple “yes” or “no” should suffice
March 5, 2017 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm #1222850LightbriteParticipant“Every member of society has a part in deciding what’s ethical.” (RebYidd23)
Except in Torah right? In an observant Jewish community, if someone takes ethics into his own mind/heart and that goes against what everyone else is thinking/doing, then he/she could risk being expelled from that society. Oui?
March 5, 2017 8:32 pm at 8:32 pm #1222851👑RebYidd23ParticipantTorah is not ethics.
And Health, if you’re acknowledging the existence of medical ethics, why doesn’t it apply to you?
March 5, 2017 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm #1222852yehudayonaParticipantAlthough Health! has claimed to be in the medical field, I don’t think he has said he’s a medical professional.

March 6, 2017 12:19 am at 12:19 am #1222854MenoParticipantWhere do you see that we give the same answer? And how could Joseph be right and I be wrong?
I thought Joseph and LU are the same person
March 6, 2017 12:22 am at 12:22 am #1222855Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantIf we’re the same person, we’re schizophrenic because we disagree sometimes.
We also have very different personalities. And live in different time zones.
March 6, 2017 12:48 am at 12:48 am #1222856LightbriteParticipant“If we’re the same person, we’re schizophrenic because we disagree sometimes.” (LU)
Or just honest about your cognitive dissonance.
We all have it. I want peas for dinner and ice cream. I only chose one because I really don’t want the other but I actually do but I don’t but I do.
March 7, 2017 1:53 am at 1:53 am #1222857frumnotyeshivishParticipantThe topic should be: at what age are other people entitled to make hygiene decisions for others- particularly those they don’t know? (NEWSFLASH TO THE SECOND HAND SMOKE BANDWAGON FOLK: occasional second hand smoke outdoors is about as unhealthy as putting on deodorant or a little more healthy than a vaccine and I’m a pro-vax dude…)

March 7, 2017 2:46 am at 2:46 am #1222859👑RebYidd23ParticipantFNY, vaccines are healthy. Secondhand smoke is unhealthy. And I have had immediate negative reactions to secondhand smoke.

March 7, 2017 3:15 pm at 3:15 pm #1222862MenoParticipantDid you take “medical ethics”? I think Not!
That is true, but I did learn how to respond to questions. Apparently they don’t teach that in “medical ethics”.

March 7, 2017 3:39 pm at 3:39 pm #1222864👑RebYidd23ParticipantI never took medical ethics in college, but in my elementary school ethics class in second grade they said that medical professionals are not supposed to harm people.
March 7, 2017 3:46 pm at 3:46 pm #1222865MenoParticipantNow which question are you referring to?!?
I asked you one question in this thread. The thread isn’t so long, so you should be able to find it yourself.
If you don’t want to answer it, just say so. Don’t act as if I’m the one being ambiguous.

Things that you posted earlier in the thread, but particularly this:

March 7, 2017 6:53 pm at 6:53 pm #1222872TheGoqParticipantI started at age 45 not cigarettes just an occasional cigar on the porch when the weather permits.

Right Here:
“that medical professionals are not supposed to harm people.”
