As the recent story of a Pennsylvania school that watched its students over laptop webcams illustrates, there is a downside to these ubiquitous cameras.

To add to that caveat, kids especially should be aware that ANYTHING that they send into cyberspace is there FOREVER, and can show up on any of a number of sites that will potentially embarrass them. Never write or upload anything that you would not want seen by strangers, much less family and friends.

It can be more then embarrassing.

Someone (like a molester, for example) who wants G-d forbid to do someone harm, knows exactly who to look for, once their pictures are on the internet.

The camera can simply be turned toward a wall or corner or down toward the desk

(as long as everyone always remembers to leave it that way, when not in use).

There’s a story in today’s Daily News (Sept. 2, 2011) about a creep who set up fake songs for downloading and then was able to take over the computers of those who downloaded them.

He then was able to steal personal info, photos, and documents, as well as remotely watching people thru their webcams.

He would then contact those people and blackmail them.

The graphic details of the story are not appropriate for this site, but suffice it to say they are pretty bad and the perp is now going to prison for several years.

Please be careful which sites you go to, what you download, and it may not be a bad idea to treat your webcam as a window – leave it open when you want people to see in, and physically cover it (or unplug it, if possible) when you don’t.

A plus about webcam… (well actually skype).

I missed a week of therapy recently for whatever reason and my therapist called me and said that we could do a skype session. It didn’t end up working out but I thought it was pretty cool that she had even thought of it.

I’m not usually a paranoid person, but isn’t the little diode next to the web cam supposed to indicate if it’s on or off? Specifically, is there any chance that a hacker could have turned on the webcam but not triggered the light to go on? I thought that the purpose of the light was to protect people from this.

(A couple of decades ago, when I potchked with old MS-Basic, I remember there was a way to turn the caps-lock on and off without the indicator light being lit.)
