The frum community in the us needs a serious plan to deal with a potential outbreak here. Our major Yeshivos can easily be closed down for weeks if ch”v a few students test positive. This would disrupt the lives of tens of thousands of us. I would like to see a greater sense of urgency amongst our leadership in preparation for this scenario. As reported, the fatality rate of this virus is R”L 10 times higher than the flu, we need to get prepared t ou protect ourselves.
March 12, 2020 11:10 am at 11:10 am #1839378lowerourtuition11210ParticipantWhat greater sense of urgency are you suggesting that they are not doing by listening to the local government entities or the federal guidelines?
March 12, 2020 11:10 am at 11:10 am #1839386lowerourtuition11210ParticipantAnother Website is carrying the announcement from the Five Tiowns Rabbonim (icluding Rabbi Dr. Aaron Glatt, Board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, is currently Chairman of Medicine and Chief of Infectious Diseases / Hospital Epidemiologist at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital). So yes their is leadership in addressing this issue.
March 12, 2020 11:10 am at 11:10 am #1839391akupermaParticipantThe fatality rate is unknown since it appears that most people exposed to the disease don’t get sick enough to tell those who keep statistics. Unlike flu, it doesn’t have a severe impact on children, and Baruch ha-Shem, our community has lots of children. It is an extra round of flu season, with no vaccine.
It is not, unless it mutates, anything all that serious (compare the regular measles, chicken pox and polio epidemics prior to the vaccine, the influenza of 1918, and the plague epidemics prior to antibiotics). The world really isn’t ending.
March 12, 2020 11:40 am at 11:40 am #1839405pro geshmake yiddenParticipantWhat’s the fatality rate of the flu?

what does this all mean?March 12, 2020 6:48 pm at 6:48 pm #1839595meir GParticipantthe environmentalist were needlessly worried about plastic in the landfills ( no shopping bags) so now they have more disposable everything by the millions of tons , not to mention more cleansing agents in the air etc..
March 12, 2020 9:27 pm at 9:27 pm #1839606GadolhadorahParticipantMeir G: Nothing to worry about. The Trumpkopf has tweeted that you and your family at at “very, very low risk” and that the testing program is “working wonderfully well” and “anyone who wants a test can get one”. He also said today that everyone coming in from Europe is “being tested very strongly” and that the virus will “soon be gone”. Every one of those statements was contradicted today by the scientists and members of his task force. If you had money in the equities markets, 18 months of gains were lost in the past week. All is well. Nothing to be concerned about because its a “foreign virus” and we should blame the Chinese, the Italians and everyone else except the “stable genius” who spent the past 2 months doing nothing on preparedness and testing other than shutting down flights from China.

March 12, 2020 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm #1839611geshmakecholentloverParticipantHonestly, there is nothing that you can do besides prevention, and hocking won’t make the virus go away either. So everyone just daven, do teshuva, and have kavana l’covid 19 brochos of shmone esrei in order to bring Mashiach now!!!

March 13, 2020 12:05 am at 12:05 am #1839642DovidBTParticipantMy personal plan was to stock up on Vodka. It doesn’t have as much alcohol as hand sanitizer or Isopropyl Alcohol, so I need lots of it.
March 13, 2020 6:15 am at 6:15 am #1839663HaimyParticipantThe CDC’s recommendation:
Get Ready for COVID-19 Now
Have supplies on hand
Contact your healthcare provider to ask about obtaining extra necessary medications to have on hand in case there is an outbreak of COVID-19 in your community and you need to stay home for a prolonged period of time.
If you cannot get extra medications, consider using mail-order for medications.
Be sure you have over-the-counter medicines and medical supplies (tissues, etc.) to treat fever and other symptoms. Most people will be able to recover from COVID-19 at home.
Have enough household items and groceries on hand so that you will be prepared to stay at home for a period of time.
Take everyday precautions
Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Take everyday preventive actions
Clean your hands often
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, or having been in a public place.
If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
To the extent possible, avoid touching high-touch surfaces in public places – elevator buttons, door handles, handrails, handshaking with people, etc. Use a tissue or your sleeve to cover your hand or finger if you must touch something.
Wash your hands after touching surfaces in public places.
Avoid touching your face, nose, eyes, etc.
Clean and disinfect your home to remove germs: practice routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces (for example: tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, toilets, faucets, sinks & cell phones)
Avoid crowds, especially in poorly ventilated spaces. Your risk of exposure to respiratory viruses like COVID-19 may increase in crowded, closed-in settings with little air circulation if there are people in the crowd who are sick.
Avoid all non-essential travel including plane trips, and especially avoid embarking on cruise ships.
If COVID-19 is spreading in your community, take extra measures to put distance between yourself and other people to further reduce your risk of being exposed to this new virus.
Stay home as much as possible.
Consider ways of getting food brought to your house through family, social, or commercial networks
Have a plan for if you get sick:
Consult with your health care provider for more information about monitoring your health for symptoms suggestive of COVID-19.March 13, 2020 7:52 am at 7:52 am #1839659meir GParticipantGodolphin, what does the president have to do with this? That was true, at that time. With a New virus, things change everyday.
It was the Libs under Clinton that Decimated Medical Care. The US used to be Number 1 in Medicine!
March 13, 2020 3:15 pm at 3:15 pm #1839726lowerourtuition11210ParticipantLike Obama/Biden did any better with swine flu? No matter what you say this virus did not start in the US but overseas (yes in China).
March 13, 2020 3:16 pm at 3:16 pm #1839731CuriosityParticipantI can’t believe that even through all of this, some sick-in-the-head people are still so obsessed and demented that they’re putting so much of their time and focus into weaponizing this against the President. This has nothing to do with him. Pull your head out of the sand and go seek professional help.
