So my brother made his turkey for this shabbos (you know, the one your wife’s job gives her for free by thanksgiving). And of course, he has like 10 lbs of leftover turkey.
So then I was thinking, that is why we are so much better than them. See, on Pesach, when we make a lamb, the halacha is that you aren’t allowed to have any leftovers. Can you imagine, we’d be eating the blazes thing until sukkos!
But they are so dumb, they make a whole turkey for their holiday, and then have to eat leftover turkey until X-mas. And then leftover spiral ham until they throw it out while cleaning for Easter.

i also hate social parties. Especially the neighborly one. THis year I declined and told them sorry I am really not a social person, and prefer staying home to do the dishes.

December 25, 2011 5:28 pm at 5:28 pm #838434Shticky GuyParticipantPopa I fear you made an uncharacteristic error. The lamb at Pesach had to be ‘ben shana’ which means up to a year old (Rashi). Have you ever seen a lamb of that age? They are skinny little things. There was not much chance of having left over. To the contrary, many families did not have enough. There would certainly not have been much chance of having lamb chops left overs for a long period of time!

According to some website, newborn lambs weigh between 8 and 15 pounds. (thanksgiving turkeys weigh about that much.)

Turkey, the most delicious bird created by Hashem, can certainly be eaten for a few days after Shabbos Kodesh along with the left over kigel and cholunt. The Chanukah goose leftovers just sit in the fridge.
Now “they” don’t get a chance to ear their leftovers since they are too busy going to Mickey D’s, Dominos and ordering Chinese takeout.

The modern bird has been selectively bred for large white meat production. The toms are so clumsy that they cannot breed naturally, and all production is had by artificial insemination (which is how most things, including chicken and beef, are done because of the efficiency and scale). If you want the bird that the acharonim struggled with, there are hobbyists and farms that grow “heritage turkeys” but they don’t come frozen and wrapped.

The fact you both had repeated and quoted me here from other threads kind of freaks me out. Do i need to be paranoid now? I mean why would you memorize them and then recite them like a monologue as in acting class?

December 26, 2011 6:33 pm at 6:33 pm #838445JotharMemberThere is much contradictory info on this, but bar shatya’s is what wikipedia says. Other sites say 65 pounds-130 for a yearling lamb. But that’s with modern pproduction methods. Ancient animals were much scrawnier.
But it’s hard to get good info, as lamb is not that popular…it’s the silence of the lamb weights.
You also have to remember that the ancient kezayis was much smaller than today’s halachic kezayis, more akin to an actual zayis. So that works in pba’s favor.
(kezayis today fallows halachic mesorah, so one who eats a kezayis of matzah based on the old standard isn’t yotzei- sorry Rabbi Slifkin…)
