What do you suggest as a new washing machine? What is the advantage of front load over top load? Any other tips in choosing a new washing machine?
November 9, 2010 8:21 pm at 8:21 pm #708154tzippiMemberIf you get a front load you’ll want to get a newer model, to be sure that all the kinks – like possible mold buildup – have been ironed out.
Not sure how large your family is, but you might want to get one with small AND large load options.

The dissadvantage: takes longer to wash and dubble the price.
November 9, 2010 9:47 pm at 9:47 pm #708158shimmelMemberFront loaders have agitaters as opposed to front loaders which do not.. Agitaters can tear your laundry, the front loaders are more gentle while doing a really good job.
November 9, 2010 9:57 pm at 9:57 pm #708159Fast ForwardMemberA load of a laundry in a front loader takes about an hour.
November 9, 2010 10:55 pm at 10:55 pm #708160rcParticipantI am so glad i can help you solve this issue. I just got my Electrolux IQ touch from Sears after much research and deliberation. I am so obesesed with this machine, i have washed everything in my house. MY biggest problem now is that it holds so much laundry in one load (I’m talking motzai the nine days in the bungalow colony big!) that I only need to do one load of laundry a week. My poor machine is sad and lonely all the other days!!! (we are four at home now, and most of my stuff is hand wash) any way. heres the deal with the front loaders. ELectrolux was the only company that owners did not complain about the mold smell. I will tell you this, when the wash is done, the door and gasket are WET (think laudromat) YOU MUST KEEP THE DOOR OPEN OR AJAR between washes. So if you have a toddler roaming about and this is a concern for you, dont get a front loader. Also the dispenser can get gunky and slimy (again think laudromat) and that too is wet after use so leave it open too. those are the only annoyances i can see. THis thing holds tons more than your old maytag with an agitator. It is so gentle on the clothes. but…The spin is litrerally like a jet engine, so always choose low spin unless its towels or blankets. The machine is so quiet and easy to use and a pleasure to have around. I love watching it work. You can pause the cycle AT ANY TIME to add things. the way the water fills you are always able to open the door. Remember with any front loader you have to buy special HE soap which is expensive but you only use a small amt. I am obsessed with Persil (sorry its German) but I used to use it in Israel and its great for front loaders. for more on that check out my blog at http://www.thebabyessentials.com where I review Persil MegaPerls. I looooovvvvveeee that soap. ALl in all I could not be happier with my purchase. Water usage was also important to me cuz i have septic tank. Now i am using 15-20 gallons instead of 60 Yes all top loaders use up to 60gallons per load even the new ones!! As long as you are willing to keep the door open and buy the special soap you will be thrilled with it. I even put my son’s cotton tzitzis in (dont tell him!) they came out perfect. I put the strings in a wash bag .. the machine is so gentle they werent knotted at all. Oh be sure and spring for the pedestal. Yes it is a waste of money, but its great having the laundry at waist level. otherwise its hard to reach the clothes inside. and yes you need the factory pedestal you cannot just build something yoruserlf cuz this thing spins like a jet plane, it needs to be properly anchored. I love my machine!!
November 9, 2010 11:02 pm at 11:02 pm #708161rcParticipantone more thing.. you dont need the more expensive wave model or the steam feature (which costs more) this IQ touch is everything you need in a washing machine TRUST ME>>>
November 10, 2010 5:02 pm at 5:02 pm #708162sms007Memberjl, i too bought a front loader washer/dryer (frigidaire though), and i agree with you that its awesome!!!!what you mentioned about it spinning lkike a jet plane, so it needs rto be anchored- did you try aking out the shipping bolts? they’re giant screws that are there to protect it during handling and if you don’t take them out the machine will spin and jump like crazy- it ruins the machine too- oh and delivery men don’t take it out. we figure this out after our machine did that lol its in the back of the washer- check it out (maybe colored… read the manual if you still have it)
November 10, 2010 10:16 pm at 10:16 pm #708163crdleMemberDo not get a front loader, its garbage, get top loader, whirl pool or maytag only!
November 10, 2010 10:28 pm at 10:28 pm #708164rcParticipantthnaks mine is on a pedestal and spinning great although the highest spin is really like a jet engine. but its quiet and doesnt jump around, I just mean its really powerful. I love my new machine. Cant say enough great things about it. but i can see how it might not be practical in a house full of little ones because the door does need to stay opened to dry out.
November 10, 2010 11:58 pm at 11:58 pm #708165sms007Memberok, thats good- ours did that and we were panicking til we figured it out lol
November 11, 2010 12:32 am at 12:32 am #708166estherhamalkaMemberI got a new machine in the summer-its a combination-it loads from on top, but it doesnt have an agitator so it is considered like a front-loader.It also uses the HE detergent and has seriously like 15 cycles. I love it but it took time to get used to in that you cant just open it up in the middle to throw something in that you forgot. Also, I never see the machine making suds so I always wonder if my clothes are getting clean! Anyway, my appliance repair-man happened to be in my basement for my dryer and he was very unhappy with me that I bought this new machine. He said that had I asked him what to buy, he would have reccomended an ordinary old fashioned machine with an agitator as they are less apt to breaking.
Go figure!
