I heard that Mishpacha magazine (Family First, etc.) was put into cheirem in yerushalayim. Is that true?! If so, why….?!

I am sorry but I really resent BINAH magazine for running ads like these for women.
IS that what a Jewish magazine has to put in a yiddishe woman’s head?
That she should go take a risk of breaking her neck on an icy steep hill wearing slippery fibre glass skiis????
Even if she doesnt kill herself, fine, but what is this going-away-with-the-girls for a weekend teach her family? Should men start going-away-with-the-boys ice fishing or for hockey? I am sorry but that is all goyisher nachas.
October 18, 2011 5:26 am at 5:26 am #818488aliqfayParticipantNPGS hasn’t been carrying Mishpacha for quite a while. They carry Yated, Hamodia and Bina – no Mishpacha or Ami. Not surprising, considering the general flavor/hashkofos/controversial topics approached – of course, with a respectful, sophisticated, journalistic air that sometimes misses the point that not every personality deserves the title Rabbi (secular scientists – Reb So-and-So?!) and the respect accorded (and lack of rabbinical advisory board for the Mishpacha [they claim to have one, but refused to identify the rabbonim when a friend of mine contacted them – I think the “board” is comprised of Rabbi Grylak, the editor]).
October 18, 2011 8:22 am at 8:22 am #818489ToiParticipantoy vey- you cant come from your hashkafic perspective, give people titles and kavod, and then have taanos when people who disagree vehemently with your hashkafos dont like the same things you do. its a catch 22. they dont hold of yu or its faculty, they are against it because their gedolim were too, and therefore they dont want a publication in their house that promotes values they dont like. your sarcasm is a crutch.sounds dumb. for the record i saw the patchkevill up this week. it says like the post above. and its mipharet mishpacha.

Simple; the Mishpacha is extremely tolerant and accepting of just about every movement within Orthodox Judaism. Some hold that Mishpacha has taken this tolerance too far and is tolerating and accepting groups that should not be accepted.

They do have a rov, Rav Neustadt of Detroit, whom I know and respect very much.
I happen to love the Mishpacha, but thought the piece this week with Rav Schachter about the batei din and toanim was pushing the envelope a bit.

I am going to nitpick about this comment. Would you be so against this if a family went skiing and the mother decided to join her husband and children in this sport?
I think if there is a women who feels like she is very overwhelmed/stressed and becoming resentful or depressed or near a breakdown (which does happen!!) then kol hakavod. Go to an all girls shabbaton. Is it better for her to suffer from a nervous breakdown? Is it better for her to be resentful to her husband and children?

Rav Chaim Kanievsky retracted his signing of the ban, and Rav Shteinman refused to sign it. The other signatories still stand by it. Links to article on this in the @mishpacha twitter feed, around May.

Rav Schachter has the right to say whatever he feels is right. I don’t think anyone (or almost anyone) would say that Rav Schachter’s opinion is inherently invalid. Someone might disagree with it, but it’s never invalid.

no. Seriously now. The fact is that skiing is dangerous. And ask my husband who was choking back tears while doing a tahar on a mais, in Chevra Kadisha on a 17 year old boy who got killed down hill skiing on vacation.
But aside from that, even if the ad said “c’mon and join us for …….whatever….for a shabbos breakaway.” Like this is the problem. A woman should not run away from her family. Her happiness is THE HOME! SHe is the HOME! If mom seeks outside escapism and needs retreats on the holiest day of the week ,i’d say there are serious issues that need tackling.
This whole new conconted concept is totally wrong and different than if we were talking about an overwhelmed stressed out mom who just wants to get away with her husband and rightfully DESERVES SO! Like say going away to Aishs Chayil or her in-laws for a rest. Everyone needs a break. I am fully supportive of that.
But running away from the family with “the girls” to have fun, is different. And if she wants to go have dangerous fun she should at least bring all her loved ones with her who could share in a neck breaking adventure with her. What fun is breaking your neck alone?

I’m not mad at the gedolim c”v, I’m mad at the way people manipulate them. They are obviously not “dumb” at all, but there are, in fact, resha’im who deliberately manipulate them in order to cause problems. Let me give you an example:
When Rav Nosson Kamenetsky’s found out that his book was in the process of being banned (he was in the States for a heart condition. Perfect timing, no?), he immediately contacted the perpetrators of the ban, and asked to arrange a meeting with the gedolim involved, specifically Rav Eliashiv, shlit”a. They told him that they asked Rav Eliashiv, and he said that he didn’t want to speak to R’ Nosson. Rav Kamenetsky was very surprised. Later on, he asked his son to speak directly to Rav Eliashiv himself, without any interfering intermediaries. His son reported back that when Rav Eliashiv heard what they told Rav Kamenetsky, he reacted in astonishment. “They told me that R’ Nosson said he wouldn’t speak to me!!” he said.
Another example: Rav Eliashiv told Rav Kamenetsky that they would discuss which parts of the book need to be changed, and that he wouldn’t publish a ban in the Yated in the meantime, as long as R’ Nosson would stop selling the books. So he stopped selling them for the while. Naturally, when he found the ban in the Yated the next week, he was a bit surpised (but probably not as much as the previous time). So he went to Rav Eliashiv to inquire as to what happened. Rav Eliashiv responded, “They told me that you kept selling them!”
By the way, Rav Eliashiv is more upset about the ban than I am. If you don’t believe me, you can ask him.
And of the many signatories of the ban, only one of them can read English; the one who can read English never read the book.
Rav Moshe Sternbuch shlit”a can read English, and he actually READ THE BOOK!! And guess what? HE LOVES IT!!!
