Donald Trump is very much for and against it (and everything else).

May 16, 2016 4:36 pm at 4:36 pm #1152389Avi KParticipantCharlie, the Rema and the Chatam Sofer have mandated it. Regarding, Jews in the Politburo, there is a joke that at one meeting Trotsky whispered to Sverdlov “Throw out the goy (Stalin) and get someone else. I have yahrtzeit”. BTW, his great=grandson is frum and lives in a settlement.

“I’d rather a female Dem I have personally known since 1970 (when she was attending Yale Law School) than the grandson of a German Protestant immigrant”
“None of my comments have been in support of a particular candidate.”
Busted.
And why the prejudice against immigrants?
Can we please all stand up (figuratively) L’kavod HaTorah and say that the views being expressed here are antithetical to Judaism? Well?
May 16, 2016 11:58 pm at 11:58 pm #1152393dbrimParticipant“I am a member of my town Democratic Party Committee.”
Yes.
“Secretary Clinton is not a Liberal, she is a Centrist who is preaching to Liberal Dems to offset Sen. Sander’s appeal.”
Can you provide evidence to back up this statement? Do you define centrist as anyone “to the right of my philosophy”.
“I remember when it was legal in the USA to refuse employment to Jews and Blacks as well as housing.”
With the incessantly increasing intermarriage rates, this might well be a double-edged sword.
“I am not an Israeli, I do not base my vote solely on potential treatment of the settlements. There are many things higher on my list. It’s a matter of priorities. As someone whose family now stretched nine generations in the USA these priorities are different than yours.”
You are a Jew. Your ONLY priority should be Eretz Yisroel – the King’s palace. Being a 9th generation American doesn’t negate the historical fact that we have sooner or later been expelled from every country we have ever inhabitted. And as mentioned earlier, the flood in Noach’s time, according to some commentaries, was the result of sactioned same-gender relationships – legalization of same gender marriages should concern all Jews.

Not busted. I wrote I’d rather X than Y. I didn’t say I support X. I have repeatedly said that I won’t vote for Trump. The reality is that I’ll vote for the Democratic Party’s nominee. BUT Secretary Clinton is not yet the nominee. I did not vote for her in my state’s primary.
Prejudice is not against immigrants, I admit to not liking Germans. Read a bit about Grandpa Trump and how after returning to Germany from the US he was stripped of his German citizenship for avoiding military service and deported back to the US. He tried to buy his way out of the deportation but the local government said no.
May 17, 2016 2:41 am at 2:41 am #1152395👑RebYidd23ParticipantMathematically, you’re probably wasting your vote no matter who you vote for, because your vote isn’t going to be the deciding vote.
May 17, 2016 4:48 am at 4:48 am #1152396Avi KParticipantCTlawyer, would you have disliked Lou Gehrig? Babe Ruth was a also likable guy albeit an unfaithful husband and a bit of a glutton. I once knew an American-born Catholic of German extraction who went ballistic whenever he heard about anti-Semitism as relatives of his were murdered for hiding Jews.
Dbrim, we have a universal message as well. Rav Kook says that we will achieve this when we are all here in EY and have a Torah state. However, if someone must live in Chutz laAretz temporarily he should consider himself an emissary of Torah as a light unto the nations. This includes prioritizing EY as the gentiles are judged by how they treat us. Not to mention the strategic value of Israel and the shared values (which is why the conservatives support us and the liberals are at best lukewarm – the former want an America based on traditional values and the latter want an Obamanation).

potato – potAHto – you are SOOOO busted.
But my primary concern are the liberal Hashkafos you espouse that are not congruous with torah hashkafos – and your apparent apathy toward Israel.
How do you explain your ideology as a frum Jew?

or should I say stalker?????????????
Who are you to tell me what my ONLY priority is??????????????
You certainly are not my Rav or father Z”L or spouse B”H.
You have an agenda that is different than mine. In America we have the right to voice our own opinions.
I’ll not reply to you again. Unlike the biggest social media website, we don’t have an option to block here, or you would be blocked. Grow up and learn a little respect for others.
May 17, 2016 1:52 pm at 1:52 pm #1152400Avi KParticipantCTlawyer, he is your fellow Jew. That gives him the right (especially if he is over 50). Moreover, if we have the right to voice our own opinions we can also opine as to your priorities. I suggest that you heed Obama’s advice to Howard U grads. Prof. Jonathan Adler wrote in the Volokh Conspiracy that they needed to hear it (another person who advises strangers as to their priorities) and I think you do too.

That is not true. Jews have never been expelled from India or Ireland.

May 18, 2016 2:27 pm at 2:27 pm #1152406charliehallParticipant“Leon Trotsky (Lev Bronstein) headed the Red Army and, for a time, was chief of Soviet foreign affairs.”
Definitely a Jew and second only to Lenin in importance. Also the single person most responsible for the Communist victory in Russia’s civil war. Would that he had used the army to overturn Stalin in 1924. Even Lenin himself seems to have realized that Stalin was Bad News but he died in January 1924.
” Yakov Sverdlov (Solomon) was both the Bolshevik party’s executive secretary and — as chairman of the Central Executive Committee — head of the Soviet government.”
Halachically Jewish but his family had converted to Christianity.
” Grigori Zinoviev (Radomyslsky) headed the Communist International (Comintern), the central agency for spreading revolution in foreign countries.”
Zinoviev publically opposed the Bolshevik coup. That almost got him thrown out of the party.
” Other prominent Jews included press commissar Karl Radek (Sobelsohn)”
Radek was in Sweden at the time of the Bolshevik Revolution.
“, foreign affairs commissar Maxim Litvinov (Wallach),”
Litvinov was in the UK at the time of the Bolshevik Revolution.
“Lev Kamenev (Rosenfeld)”
Not halachically Jewish (mother was Christian). He, like Zinoviev, publically opposed the Bolshevik coup and was almost expelled from the party.
” and Moisei Uritsky.”
Definitely Jewish and did play a role in the Bolshevik Revolution.
Interestingly, the only two Jews who DID play a role in the Bolshevik coup — Trotsky and Uritsky — had only joined the party a few months earlier.

Not Shabat, kashrut, taharat hamishpacha, chinuch, economics, anti-Semitism all over the world….?
May 18, 2016 5:43 pm at 5:43 pm #1152408Avi KParticipantCharlie, if the seller only wants to sell to a gentile or to a Jew why should he not have that right? Besides having overwhelmingly Jewish neighborhoods is good for the Jews.

Taking a break from 12 hours saying Tehillim and sitting in the ICU watching machines keep Mrs. CTL alive.
I don’t ever wish this on anyone, but you can be sure that in this type of situation, Israel is not one’s only priority. The life and health of one’s spouse, the mother of your children, the grandmother of your grandchildren, your partner in life is your number ONE priority.
Priorities change with circumstances, that doesn’t mean other things are not important.

May 20, 2016 9:00 pm at 9:00 pm #1152413mw13ParticipantWell now that Mitt Romney and Bil Kristol have given up recruiting a third-party, old-time Republican bid for the White House, the only third party candidate I know of is Gary Johnson… Which may not be such a bad idea, considering the poor excuses for Presidential Candidates the two major parties have dredged up…
Or, we could always go for the write-in…
