Are they as bad as reputed?

And what about ’em car mechanics – are they out to get you under the hood?

True Story: My sister has a lot of Arab coworkers. One of them also sold used cars on the side. One day, one of the Jewish girls heard him speaking on the phone trying to sell a car to another Arab. She was really surprised to hear him speaking in hebrew (since he was speaking to another Arab.) When he got off the phone, she asked him why he was speaking in hebrew to an Arab? He said, “What? Are you crazy? You think an Arab would buy a used car from another Arab?”

I did not make this story up.

Used car salesmen have a bad reputation.

Because the law considers anything they say to induce to to buy the car as puffing (meaning they can’t be held to claims made) they stretch the truth.

Only what is reduced to writing in the 4 corners of the contract binds the seller.

So if you are told the car was only driven on Sundays by an old lady to drive to the market and actually that Mercury Grand Marquis was a livery vehicle, you lose.

As for mechanics they don’t care if they get you under the hood or in the trunk

Used car salemen – about the same as new-car salesmen.

I have a post here from 2 hours ago – I guess the Moderators are still deliberating on it…. I guess they are hesitating for the same reason I thought twice about posting it.. oh well …it was a funny story, and I thought it would be okay. Maybe I should post it in hebrew instead… oh, right, I guess that wouldn’t help.

Not all are bad. I and my neighbors have bought cars from Sher Auto Sales in Baltimore and were very happy.

    huju………….

The difference between used car salesmen and new car salesmen is that New Car dealers have to uphold certain standards to keep their franchises. If there are too many complaints to the manufacturer the franchise can be pulled.

iacisrmma, according to my source, Sher is about the only honest used car place around. And I don’t mean around Baltimore.

I’m told that with the electronic odometers (as opposed to the old mechanical ones), it’s very easy to turn them back, so you shouldn’t assume that any odometer reading is correct.

What made the mechanical odometers more secure from modification?

Apparently it took some skill to turn them back. Maybe you can find a “how-to” video on Youtube.

My all time favorite quote of my late father (Z”L)

Fair? Who ever told you life is fair?

I’m sure I’ve seen a thread about this

before, and probably not too long ago…
