My son is going to learn in Eretz Yisroel and he needs an unlocked phone. Where do I get one?

August 25, 2014 4:59 pm at 4:59 pm #1030009–ParticipantDon’t bother with an unlocked phone unless he wants to use it with multiple carriers. He should just get a phone from the provider he intends to use.

Many carriers will unlock an existing phone you have still in service with them if you tell them you will be outside the US and want to use the phone with an international carrier, though you must make sure it has a slot for a sim card (any 4g capable phone will have a sim card slot)
August 25, 2014 11:43 pm at 11:43 pm #1030011–ParticipantCell phones in the US work on a different frequency range than in Israel so it also needs to be a world phone, eliminating the cheap phones.
August 26, 2014 12:30 am at 12:30 am #1030012NTorchMemberWe called AT&T and they unlocked our daughter’s phone. You can get a sim card from TalkNSave or Amigo and then use it with the unlocked phone.

August 26, 2014 7:08 am at 7:08 am #1030014☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThere are (or at least use to be) some cheap phones which are world phones, you just need to do your research.
Shopping613, many carriers “lock” the phones they sell, making them unusable with other carriers, even those using the same technology. “Unlocked” means a code was used to make the phone usable for other carriers.

Make sure that it works with the bands of the carrier he plans on using.
For example, HotMobile only runs on 3G, 850/2100

August 27, 2014 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm #1030018gmara613MemberIf you want a phone that works in the US and in Eretz Yisroel, then it should be unlocked. This just means that it can be used for more than one service provider. I have found that phones on AT&T and T-Mobile tend to work overseas, because you can put a new Sim card in them. Sprint and Verizon tend not to be like that, although I have seen Verizon with a sim card lately. If you have an existing phone that you want unlocked, you can ask the carrier you are on to unlock it for you. They may agree, especially if you have been with them for a while. If not, there are stores that will do it for you, usually cell phone stores in malls, etc. If you just want a separate phone for EY you can but there. Also Golan Telecom has good rates over there currently. Hope this helps.
