Are some unpleasant smells universally repulsive?

I currently am not a fan of the smell of overcooked cruciferous vegetables, possibly fermenting kitchen garbage, and alas, dead animals that have been decaying for some time.

Do you find all of these smells unpleasant? I guess that sometimes the smell of overcooked cabbage or etc can be masked by other flavors. Still, in itself, whenever I cook cruciferous vegetables, often daily, my house stinks.

Is this inherently human? Or did we learn how to distinguish unpleasant smells sociologically? Or maybe this is Hashem’s way of getting us to stay away from germs and/or substances that can make us ill?

—I am not talking about smells that some people find oddly pleasant, such as the smell of gasoline or cigarettes. Instead, I am wondering if all or almost all people agree that some smells are unpleasant.

    Thank you πŸ™‚

I don’t cook cruciferous vegetables for that reason.

Skunk spray is universally repulsive, and not just to humans. That’s why it’s an effective defense mechanism.

Yes. Sense of smell is a very important protective mechanism.

Chaver: Many questions simply come up as I am living daily life. Some of them I ask here πŸ™‚

Chaver: Also, I am a fan of eating cooked cruciferous vegetables, but I dislike how my house smells after cooking them.

My dog likes rolling around all over gross-smelling things as happiness beams across his face. I’ve often wondered if he and I have ever agreed on unpleasant scents.

And what about my perception of scents with that of others? …….. and eventually the wondering comes into the CR in the form of a question.

My husband claims he enjoys the smell of skunk spray. It reminds him of the good ol’ camp days.

Are skunks repelled by the scent of their own skunk spray? Or another skunk’s spray?
