Do you hang up diplomas?
I’m thinking of getting a degree from a very well-regarded college school of higher education that a lot of frum people go to (not Touro), and my wife is very proud of it.
Do you think I should let her hang it up in the living room so that everyone can see it?
November 3, 2013 12:51 am at 12:51 am #984907Torah613TorahParticipantFor the sake of shalom bayis, I think you should hang it up.
November 3, 2013 12:52 am at 12:52 am #984908popa_bar_abbaParticipantFor the sake of shalom bayis, I think you should hang it up.
HUH????????????????????????????????????????
I thought for the sake of shalom bayis you are supposed to put yerushalmi kugel on top of the potato kugel!!!

If it will give you gaiva then no. If you can control your gaiva and it will give your wife pleasure then why not?
November 3, 2013 12:56 am at 12:56 am #984910chani91Membermaybe tell her to hang it up in your room, then there is no prob of showing off and no problem of shlom bais so good luck with that one
November 3, 2013 1:07 am at 1:07 am #984911Veltz MeshugenerMemberHang it in your office.
November 3, 2013 1:11 am at 1:11 am #984912popa_bar_abbaParticipantWIY:
My wife wants to know why my gaava is more important than her happiness.
She says that would be the ultimate in gaava for me to think that.
November 3, 2013 1:14 am at 1:14 am #984913🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantIf she’s popa’s wife I can’t imagine she’s botheredby gaava.
November 3, 2013 1:50 am at 1:50 am #984914writersoulParticipantIf that many frum people go there, where’s the prestige?
If it’s some crummy place like Harvard Law where any guy off the street with a BTL can get in, then I don’t see the point.
Besides, isn’t the whole point of that that you then have it hanging up in your office behind the desk to intimidate all the clients? Usually in some archaic language that nobody can read?
If you’re looking for alternate places to keep it, I know someone with two advanced degrees from a very prestigious college (almost as good as Touro) who keeps her diplomas stacked in the corner of her daughter’s room.
November 3, 2013 1:54 am at 1:54 am #984915charliehallParticipantI put my diplomas in my office.
November 3, 2013 1:55 am at 1:55 am #984916popa_bar_abbaParticipantWell played writersoul. My wife says she’d give you an “aleph” if she was grading you.
November 3, 2013 1:57 am at 1:57 am #984917🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantI’m thinking of getting a degree from a very well-regarded college
would that be through mail-order?
November 3, 2013 2:01 am at 2:01 am #984918popa_bar_abbaParticipantI said I could put them in my office, but she says what if I don’t get a job after I go to school, and therefore don’t have an office to put them up in???????
November 3, 2013 2:06 am at 2:06 am #984919writersoulParticipantPBA: That would be a first…
November 3, 2013 2:11 am at 2:11 am #984920Mr SfardiParticipantPBA: First get the degree & then worry where to hang it up
November 3, 2013 9:56 pm at 9:56 pm #984921WolfishMusingsParticipantFWIW, neither my degrees nor my wife’s hang in the house. Neither for that matter, does anything that we, ourselves, worked on (we do have a wedding picture, some Jewish art and a fake kesubah). However, Eeees now wants to hang up one of my pictures.

November 4, 2013 12:30 am at 12:30 am #984922TheGoqParticipantFirst what is the diploma printed on is it a kosher animals hide or a traif animals hide? if its on paper i would just use it to cover the counter when you make some herring.
November 4, 2013 2:06 am at 2:06 am #984923writersoulParticipantI’ve only gotten one diploma so far, but first I left it in the car (after it showed up three months late) and I subsequently put it through the shredder.
I did not like my elementary school.
However, I still have my best davener award from day camp in sixth grade in a frame on my desk. Right next to my first place spelling bee certificate from fourth grade.
Okay, so maybe it is gaavahdik of me, but still…
November 4, 2013 2:24 am at 2:24 am #984924Bookworm120ParticipantNow, if it were your wife’s diploma, I’d say cover it with a tichel, to promote optimum tznius. For yours, just put a kippa over it diploma to show that you’re a G-d-fearing (presumably) man. 😛
November 4, 2013 2:50 am at 2:50 am #984925yaakov doeParticipantShouldn’t you get both the wife and the diploma before you ask the question?
November 4, 2013 3:21 am at 3:21 am #984926🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantI wasn’t going to hang up my kesuba for reasons of tnius but then my dad presented it to me surrounded by a painting of yerushalayim he made as the border. Tnius did not win out. Maybe I’ll add a tichel.
November 4, 2013 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #984927Torah613TorahParticipantSyag: So how did you deal with the gaava?
November 4, 2013 3:23 pm at 3:23 pm #984928getzil1MemberA godol hador told me he was in someone’s home and was disturbed to see that they hung up their kesuba on the wall. (He didn’t tell me whose home it was.)
November 4, 2013 3:33 pm at 3:33 pm #984929popa_bar_abbaParticipantGetzel: you are leaving out part of the story. The gadol was upset to see the kesuba hanging since that couple was divorced.
November 4, 2013 3:41 pm at 3:41 pm #984930getzil1MemberLol. That must’ve been another story since from the context of our conversation it was obvious he was talking about a still married couple.
November 4, 2013 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm #984931WolfishMusingsParticipantThe one we have up on our wall is a fake and not the genuine article. The real one is in my wife’s safe keeping (as it should be). In addition, it’s obvious upon inspection that the one on our wall is simply a customized piece of art and not the genuine article (for starters, both of the signatures are in my wife’s handwriting 🙂 )

November 4, 2013 4:22 pm at 4:22 pm #984933🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantTorah- I’m pretty proud of my dad and his work so it was a big problem.
Getzel1- most probably was my house. I have gedolei hador over regularly.
November 4, 2013 5:21 pm at 5:21 pm #984934🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantHow about a home office where you hang every diploma any of you ever got including preschool diplomas? That way, it’s in a part of the house not everyone sees, and hidden among other papers. You can even put it up near the ceiling to make it hard to read… Even if you never get a job you can use the home office for all your coffeeroom time.
November 4, 2013 5:21 pm at 5:21 pm #984935SaysMeMemberwould that be through mail-order?
