What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes? As I understand there is very little in common between them, that it is a wonder why they both have the same name, as they are almost as different as any two unrelated diseases.
Also, as I understand one is preventable and the other is hereditary or otherwise may be unpreventable.
November 21, 2010 3:05 am at 3:05 am #711035allsgr8ParticipantType 1 diabetes is not necessarily hereditary and is thought to be caused by a virus that attacks the pancreas destroying its ability to produce insulin. People with Type 1 diabetes need to administer insulin in order for their bodies to use ingested glucose for energy. Type 2 diabetes is usually genetic and can be caused as a result of a variety of health issues including overweight and obesity as major sources of the disease. People with type 2 usually can produce some insulin and are either producing insufficient insulin or they are not sensitive to the insulin being produced. The latter is called insulin resistance. Many times type 2 can be controlled with oral meds but in some instances insulin is necessary.

November 21, 2010 5:05 am at 5:05 am #711036metrodriverMemberPoster #2 (Allsgr8) said it (almost) all. He/She failed to mention that in type 2 Diabetes, one of the most effective ways to bring and keep the numbers (mg./dl.)down is through exercise. Even more important than diet, which is important, too.
November 21, 2010 5:20 am at 5:20 am #711037cofeefanMemberas i understand it (and i have type 1 so i know that more…) is that in type 1 the pancreas does not produce insulin AT ALL and type 2 the pancreas DOES produce insulin but the body does not know hot to process/use it. which is why type 2 can be resolved by losing weight sometimes and why type 1 is always there. type 1 has NOTHING to do with weight. they say it can be caused by a virus but that cannot be proven

November 21, 2010 8:05 am at 8:05 am #711039forever1MemberType 1 is auto-immune. It results from the body’s failure to produce insulin, and presently the only treatment requires the person to inject insulin. The cause of Type 1 is not fully understood yet, but they believe that genetic, and environmental factors are involved.
type 2 diabetes is the body’s resistance to the action of insulin in the cells. People who are overweight are more likely to have insulin resistance. Family history and genetics play a large role in type 2 diabetes. Diet and exercise are the primary treatment for type 2.
The two indeed have different causes and treatment however they do both evolve around blood sugars…
November 21, 2010 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm #711040apushatayidParticipantBoth are related because they revolve around the pancreas and what it produces, insulin. After that, the 2 start going their own ways.
November 21, 2010 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm #711041healthreformMemberBOTH ARE CAUSED BY FOOD CHEMICALS:
Food Chemicals are the cause of the diabetes and obesity crisis NOT Sugar in the diet
The Drug makers know this and are laughing to the Billionaire bank
The food chemicals break the gut(insulin) and this is the cause of the diabetes and obesity crisis The Drug makers are behind much of the diabetes crisis and Profit from it See here http://spirithappy.wordpress.com

November 21, 2010 8:00 pm at 8:00 pm #711043LBKParticipantType 2 is considered hereditary, and while Type 1 is not considered hereditary, there are genetic factors that make some people more pre-disposed to Type 1 diabetes than others (e.g. body weight). People with Type 2 diabetes tend to be overweight, while people with untreated Type 1 diabetes tend to be underweight. Many other differences, but many similarities as well.
November 21, 2010 9:54 pm at 9:54 pm #711044so rightMemberCan one type be caused by a person’s behavior (i.e. diet, etc.)?

November 22, 2010 1:16 am at 1:16 am #711050HomeownerMembermetrodriver and so right, any physician will tell you that type II diabetes is linked to overweight.
Tragically, overweight is a condition that plagues our community.
November 22, 2010 3:27 am at 3:27 am #711051forever1MemberLBK & so right-type 1 has nothing to do with body weight or eating habits. The reason why undiagnosed diabetes causes rapid weight loss is: Insulin is responsible for converting food into energy, Since Type 1 don’t produce any insulin the body’s cells do not receive the glucose they need for energy and the body is forced to burn fat stores for energy.
