April 19, 2012 1:38 am at 1:38 am #869448spectrumParticipantdepends what the problem is, is it that you cannot follow? then maybe a chavrusa more for your level is neccecary
if you just dont have a cheishek to learn then speak to your rebbi for help, dont be afraid Ain HAbayshon lomaid.
and if u just space out , well as rav avgdor miller says, ” no one spaces out while eating ice cream”
unless of course there is a real problem i.e. ADD etc
hatzlacha learning

April 19, 2012 3:01 am at 3:01 am #869450Sam2ParticipantTry standing up (only half-facetious here).
April 19, 2012 4:24 am at 4:24 am #869451spectrumParticipantsometimes there are distractions from a person that cause him not to be ” into learning” and therefore he wont develop a cheishek to learn,
I dont know you personally, or your matziv , and your age definetly plays a factor
In order to develop a cheishek to learn one has to learn (as your rebbi quoted from the chofetz chaim) even when he has no cheishek because if he really puts himself out to it it will eventully come, but it wont come easy, but when it comes you will appreiciated alot more.
Lets be clear. a person can want to learn, that doesnt mean he has no yezter hora telling him not to.
April 19, 2012 4:39 am at 4:39 am #869452RABBAIMParticipant1- Learn something difficult for 10 minutes with total concentration. the effort is the key. NO shortcuts or crutches. plain hard yegia
2- daven hard with a lot of begging and feeling when you say Birchas HaTorah in the am. Vihaarev Na Hashem…… and PLEASE make it sweet in my mouth……… mean IT!!
3- Deep concentration during the last Bracha before Shma. Avinu Av Harachaman…….. and give in to my heart understanding etc….. really mean it. you will see a change in a few days!
April 19, 2012 6:16 am at 6:16 am #869453HaLeiViParticipantIf you spaced out and you lost the train of thought, try again. If you are young and new in the Beis Medrash there might be many thoughts flying through your head. With persistance you will prevail.
If you find it hard to stay concentrated for extended lengths of time, take a few small breaks. That what the coffee is there for.

April 19, 2012 1:48 pm at 1:48 pm #869455blueprintsParticipantGive up the tough shlo’s and stick to rishonim lol
April 19, 2012 2:17 pm at 2:17 pm #869456jewish sourceParticipantShlo Hakodosh, the issue here is the handeling. give up the handeling work with the gemaras outline understanding the gemara every detail the rashi the tosfos simple pashut pshat not the handelerai OSIOS MACHKIMOS the letters themselves will enlighten you and give you the cheishek and drive and the sipuk and iYH you will never stop learning. Simple yegia understanding poshut pshat . not Artscrol that is giving it to you on a silver platter easy in easy out no real geshamaker reward for yourself.
another idea I would like to share with you . some chavrusos dominate the chavrusa shaf . ainer hocked un yenner shluft. both chavrusos should be saying not together but lemoshol you say the gemara and then he says the rashis but never anyone dominating
Hatzloche Rabba

April 20, 2012 5:49 pm at 5:49 pm #869459yitayningwutParticipantForce yourself to concentrate. If you tell yourself “Under no circumstances am I giving up, I’m just gonna power through this”; you’ll get used to it. Works every time.
Also, make sure you’re not tired. Get a coffee if you are.
April 20, 2012 6:36 pm at 6:36 pm #869460ItcheSrulikMemberTry a different derech for a couple days. Maybe even a different topic. Ain adam lomed ela m’makom shelibo chofetz. If “exploring” doesn’t help, then you know you have to get back to work on developing a cheshek.
April 22, 2012 6:10 am at 6:10 am #869461RABBAIMParticipantWhat have you tried that has not worked? Any of the above suggestions? My collection has worked without fail for so many Talmididm. very few individuals have tried it for real and have not succeeded. most who really followed it all have been opened!
Also, in this weeks parsha we see a connection between kedusha and kashrus. Are you careful with the hechshairim of what you put ion your mouth? Rav Akiva Eiger once told the paretn of a child who did not enjoy learning that he must have eaten treif……and once he did teshva, his geshmak followed.
