I work in a very high pressured office( I guess it pays off) and my boss just gave me such a yelling for a mistake I made. (amn’t I human?) Can anyone make me feel good?
August 31, 2009 8:00 pm at 8:00 pm #656875mi keamcha yisroelMemberi make alot more mistakes than you
August 31, 2009 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #656876mepalMemberLook at it very objectively. Its not YOU. Its the ‘____’ you did wrong.
August 31, 2009 8:03 pm at 8:03 pm #656877areivimzehlazehParticipantYour mistake is small, your boss is big 🙂
His bark is worse than his bite… 😉
Think about all you’ve accomplished- pat yourself on the back. It’s all good- tomorrow the sun will be shining again; even in your office.
Good luck
August 31, 2009 8:08 pm at 8:08 pm #656878kapustaParticipantHow long are you working there? Did you by any chance take over my job? 😉 I also worked in an office where there was chance for major botch-up and I told myself that I’m human and I’m very possibly gonna make a few mistakes. It’s not really anyones fault because it can be very hectic. I will try to do my best and find you a joke. Smile and tell yourself that it’s better something like this happen rather than something bigger.
August 31, 2009 8:08 pm at 8:08 pm #656879PhyllisMemberI dont mean to be nosey, but what sort of mistake would make your boss yell at you like that? Keep in mind that when you get paid very well there are higher expectations and bigger consenquences when goals are not met.

September 1, 2009 12:28 pm at 12:28 pm #656885oomisParticipantDepends on the mistake, how many times such a mistake has been made, and whether or not the boss got out on the wrong side of the bed that morning. Bottom line – the boss pays your salary, so you may have to suck it up. It doesn’t feel good (And I HATE bosses who take off on their employees even when they DO make a mistake), but it’s still your boss.
September 1, 2009 1:33 pm at 1:33 pm #656886yankdownunderMemberPoster when things are more calm at your job, ask for a private meeting with your employer. Try to discuss the tongue lashing and maybe constructive things your employer can suggest to improve your working productivity. This is very important Poster do this only if your employer does not have an Abusive Personality Disorder. Another possibility is to speak to a Rabbi or Rebbetzen that you feel comfortable to discuss personal matters with.
September 1, 2009 4:13 pm at 4:13 pm #656887mepalMemberRandom work question, are you allowed to make a personal local call from a work phone?
September 1, 2009 4:21 pm at 4:21 pm #656888JosephParticipantmepal: Ask the boss. 🙂
September 1, 2009 5:28 pm at 5:28 pm #656889mepalMemberJoseph: can you do that for me? Please??
September 1, 2009 5:38 pm at 5:38 pm #656890JosephParticipantSure. What’s the extension?
September 1, 2009 5:40 pm at 5:40 pm #656891mepalMember2031. Thanks, always knew I could rely on you.
September 1, 2009 5:56 pm at 5:56 pm #656892areivimzehlazehParticipantYou need to know if your boss accepts this practice in the office or not. Do you have an experienced co-worker you can ask?
September 1, 2009 5:58 pm at 5:58 pm #656893mepalMemberEveryone does it. The question is if its wrong.
September 1, 2009 6:01 pm at 6:01 pm #656894postsemgirlMemberI have a question. I want to ask my boss for a raise. I work in a school and they don’t have too much money but they are paying me peanuts and I don’t know if it would be rude to ask for a raise because sometimes they have trouble covering the month’s paychecks. Any ideas?
sorry for the run-on
September 1, 2009 6:15 pm at 6:15 pm #656895mepalMemberMake sure the boss is in a good mood first 😉
September 1, 2009 8:11 pm at 8:11 pm #656896areivimzehlazehParticipantpostsem- the worst that can happen is they’ll say no. You’ll never know unless you try. That’s my life’s motto. It sometimes made me into a fool- but at least I don’t go around wondering “what if”.
September 1, 2009 9:27 pm at 9:27 pm #656897anon for thisParticipantpostsemgirl, I think it’s all right to ask. When you do, present your case as to why you think you should be paid more: how your salary compares to the salaries of other teachers in the school, good results you achieved (improved student scores or other applicable metrics), positive evaluations, extra contributions you’ve made, etc. If your boss says you need to improve more to earn a raise, ask if you can discuss it again in a few months.
September 1, 2009 9:56 pm at 9:56 pm #656898postsemgirlMemberThanks to everyone who answerd
mepal- that’s kinda hard
areivim and anon- if he says no then I’ll be really embaressed but I guess I should try.

September 2, 2009 2:32 am at 2:32 am #656902postsemgirlMembermky- Whats the problem?
September 2, 2009 6:25 pm at 6:25 pm #656903areivimzehlazehParticipantpostsem- what is embarrassing about asking for a raise?
September 2, 2009 6:29 pm at 6:29 pm #656904YW Moderator-80MemberIt’s embarrasing to suggest that you are worth more than what is indicated by what you are receiving now, and then to be told: No, you’re not. Especially when you are in a position of low power, requesting of a higher authority
September 2, 2009 6:40 pm at 6:40 pm #656905areivimzehlazehParticipantThat’s not what the boss is saying when he says “no”. What he’s saying is: You’re a great teacher, but you’re also too nice. Therefore I can get more out of you and still pay less than the others. I will push my luck until you push back.
There’s also the delicate balance of who needs whom more. When you’re new, the employee needs the employer- so I understand that you would not want to push too hard… but you need to try and then try again next year. It’s called doing business. Otherwise, next year will be your first attempt, which is usually pretty weak.
Think about what you want to say; cut out any unnecessary comments- make it short & to the point. Take pride in what you do for the school. You are not begging for a raise- you deserve it. Take a deep breath and knock on his door. Ask him if he has just a minute, you wanted to discuss something… speak with derech eretz and shtultz.
Good luck
September 2, 2009 7:00 pm at 7:00 pm #656906squeakParticipantMost of the time, it is expected that resignation will follow a declined request for a raise.
I’m not saying it isn’t different in a school setting – it may be, but I definitely don’t agree that the asker has “nothing to lose”.
Stick around after being told no, and you’ve proven to the boss that you not worth more – or you’d have gone elsewhere to get it.
September 2, 2009 8:37 pm at 8:37 pm #656907areivimzehlazehParticipantIn this job market, that’s not really an option.
September 3, 2009 12:41 am at 12:41 am #656908postsemgirlMemberThanks everyone for your support!
Ames- you’re right. there are many girls who are waiting for my job so I don’t want to shake the boat. Also my boss is also one of my teachers in college so it’s a strange stuation
