January 28, 2009 4:59 pm at 4:59 pm #643848a jewParticipantThis is a very serious situation and chalila these boys could R”L face the death penalty. Editor this should be headline news covered by all the frum/jewish media. if you did cover this earlier why not post a link to the original story if not, why not? I do understand the sensitive nature of this case however these boys need our tifilos!
January 28, 2009 5:22 pm at 5:22 pm #643849berlinerParticipantLet this be another cause that brings achdus amongst all walks of Judaism and let us all pray for their safety. It is safe to think they did not ever know that they were transporting drugs….and believe me…. if they knew, they already did teshuva and will never get caught up in this kind of situation again!

January 28, 2009 5:35 pm at 5:35 pm #643851yaelaldrichMemberThis should be headline news — but we need to DAVEN — not cause problems for the people working on the case. Do not stage protests, call the secular media and make waves. Do mitzvos in their z’chus, say tehillim, be careful how you speak. BTW, the death penalty is reserved for murder and the like — their sentences will be more like 15-20 years in prison if R”L they are convicted.

They were to receive the trip to Japan for free in exchange. The “antiques” had drugs in them and they were caught at Narita Airport as soon as they entered the country.

Subject: UPDATE on the welfare of the three Yeshiva boys detained in Tokyo, Japan
Dear All,
Further to an email that has been widely circulated, claiming that the
three unfortunate Yeshiva bochurim detained in Tokyo, Japan are being
maltreated, allow me to clarify the following:
As a community activist involved in this specific case since it
transpired, and a member of the vaad hapoel working under the
directives of the Rabbinical advisory board, amongst them Rabbi Dayan
C.Y.D. Weis of Antwerp & Rabbi M. Shafran of Bene Beraq, I can confirm
that to the contrary, the boys with whom we have been entrusted to
steer their defense, are in fact being cared for in the best possible
manner.
After much diplomatic effort, improvements to their kosher dietary
allowances have recently been accomplished.
As initiated & lobbied by the askonim, regular medical check-ups are
carried out upon the request of our lawyers.
The boys are visited regularly by Rabbis & askonim both stationed
locally and who fly in especially to maintain their spirits & good
morale.
Our efforts at this time are concentrated on preparation of the legal
defense for the pending trial. Several pre-trials have shown some
glimmer of hope, & it is only right to share this information with all
who are concerned about their welfare.
It is nevertheless of paramount importance that we pray for the
continued success of the defense council & askonim; & pray for the
positive outcome to this case.
Please be persistent in davenning for all three bochurim:
Yaakov Yosef Ben Raizel
Yoel Zeev Ben Mirel Risa Chava
and Yosef ben Itta Rivka.
Any circulation of unfounded false rumors regarding the welfare of the
detainees is detrimental to the legal procedure, destabilizes the good
working relationship with the Japanese authorities, distracts the
lawyers & devoted askonim from their time consuming & tedious work,
and causes the uninformed to lose hope and relent from constant
davenning on the boys behalf.
May I sign off with a blessing of good tidings to all.
The Vaad Hapoel

January 28, 2009 10:03 pm at 10:03 pm #643860londonyidMemberobviously – i haven’t made myself clear – when it is PUBLIC view a stupid and untruthful comment such as “The ruthless Japanese” by one of your readers as the TRUTH is that the Japanese have been extremely considerate in providing and allowing these boys to eat KOSHER – so YESHIVAWORLD should and MUST moniter what is written on their website for it IS read by many people . PLEASE remove ANY comment IMMEDIATELY from the public domain that will influence the trial of these boys otherwise if the outcome is negative and these boys end up in prison for 25 years it will be on your heads …. PLEASE be more responsible in allowing garbage on your public website.
January 28, 2009 10:11 pm at 10:11 pm #643861londonyidMemberIn reality all the Japanese I have met are exceedingly kind, considerate and have a refined dignity and etiquette in the way they behave and talk. The truth is that evil frum jew who set the boys up to deliver drugs inside holy books should be handed over in return for the lives of these innocent boys.

Such a rachmanus! The ruthless Japanese are known to torture their prisoners! Boy have we learned a lesson from this episode!
No – torture of prisoners may have been the case during World War 2 when Japan was a Fascist ally, but Japan of today is a civilized country that just happens to have strict drug laws where sentences could be long R”L.

February 1, 2009 3:11 am at 3:11 am #643874yaelaldrichMemberMy source says the trial, which began for the youngest of the boys on Friday (Japan time), will take at least a week and a half (then the second oldest will go on trial and then after him the third boy) and the actual ruling from the judge will probably not come for all the boys until March or so. Please keep davening for the boys and the Rabbbonim and Askonim working for them.

April 29, 2009 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #643879chaimkl22MemberChaverim. The time has come for klal yisroel to organize SUSTAINED, worldwide demonstrations against the Japanese. Our tefilas are important, but we must do avodah be’poel ie. actual physical work, to accomplish the goal of freeing the yeshiva bochurim. The Japanese judge accused people by military tribunal, not by trial-by-jury (so prisoners do not get a fair trial). Their prison system evolved from the Japanese prisoner camps in World War II. It’s historical fact that while the Nazis were horrible, the Japanese were 100 times more barbaric and cruel to their prisoners. They consider themselves superior to the rest of the world, but are a barbaric nation.. ‘Shoichnei Ofor’. By worldwide demonstrations and protests, and if necessary exposing the world to the cruel, true face of Japan; boycott of Japanese products etc., they WILL LET THE bochurim go. NU?? ‘Im loy achshov, amoysai’- i.e. If not now, then when? When the boys chas v’cholila; become like ‘vegetables’ and are permanently damaged, from their treatment in Japan?

April 30, 2009 2:05 am at 2:05 am #643884RoshYeshivahMemberyaelaldrich- I’m happy to hear that the boys are not being tortured etc. and i am hoping for the best results. But pls clarify why did the kupat hair organization send around flyers specifically stating that the boys WHERE being treated harshly( i read the flyer myself about 2 months ago) Why would they write something not true as well as counterproductive? It seems you know alot about this so pls clarify.
April 30, 2009 2:15 am at 2:15 am #643885RoshYeshivahMemberCorrecting my former post Instead of WHERE being treated… Should be WERE being treated…
April 30, 2009 4:02 am at 4:02 am #643886kapustaParticipantR”Y I dont know the situation, but I have heard they are not being tortured per say, but being treated terribly. No fresh air more than a small amount (something like 15 minutes) a day, no kosher food, cant talk to one another. That, to me, qualifies as harsh, but not tortured.
DISCLAIMER: THIS IS ALL BASED ON HEARSAY.
April 30, 2009 9:44 am at 9:44 am #643887chikav a menschMemberAs quoted from reb mendel shafran who met with the bochurim in japan “the situation is horrific we must get them out. they may not utter a word and are all in separate facilities. they must sit on the hard floor with their legs crossed and their heads bowed which causes their bones to atrophy. the punishment for lifting their head is being sent to solitary where their hands are tied behind their back and they are required to kneel over like that for 16 hours a day and they must eat in this same manner” please daven for them.
April 30, 2009 3:00 pm at 3:00 pm #643888chaimkl22MemberThe Japanese are very sensitive to world opinion. Due to demonstrations, Russia became a free nation and the Berlin wall was torn down. Hundreds of thousands of Jews were freed from bondage and emigrated to the West. Russia then split up into other, smaller countries. Many of those countries are now part of NATO and are democratic. The Japanese are very sensitive to world opinion. Through demonstrations in front of their embassy or consulate, it’s possible to get the Yeshiva Bochurim released or transfered to Israel. Only a coward woud refuse to help their fellow Jew, ‘acheinu bais yisroel ho’oimdim batzoroh u’bashivyo’, rachmono litzlan. Hope to see you at the demonstrations!
April 30, 2009 3:26 pm at 3:26 pm #643889PhyllisMemberI just read a letter in the Hamodia Daily asking the oilem to be careful with Tznius in their zechus. Summer months are coming up and we know that everyone is hot…but a little extra can go a long way…
April 30, 2009 4:15 pm at 4:15 pm #643890areivimzehlazehParticipantchaimk- where, what, when… give us some details so that we can attend?
April 30, 2009 9:19 pm at 9:19 pm #643892chaimkl22MemberNo demonstrations have yet been organized to my knowledge. While it makes sense to wait
till after the trial, Klal Yisroel should be prepared to hold sustained demonstrations
if the bochurim are not released. I ask each and every one to form groups and commitees to organize the demonstrations. Make sure to get any needed permits to demonstrate and put together some big signs. Once people get involved, it will grow and become very effective and organized. Keep in mind that the Japanese prison systems has been the subject of general demonstrations by many non-Jewish groups who strongly protested their terrible cruelty. But if need be, for the bochurim, the Japanese current prison system as well as their barbaric cruelty in World War II will be exposed to the world and possible boycotts of their goods and services, as needed.
Hatzlochah Rabbah and Yeshiois Gedoilois.
May 1, 2009 1:31 pm at 1:31 pm #643893cherrybimParticipantchaimkl22: Unless so instructed by a consensus of our gedolim and Rabbonim, what you are advocating can be very detrimental to the cause.
May 1, 2009 2:36 pm at 2:36 pm #643894chaimkl22MemberSurely the gedolim will ok demonstrations when they realize that the boys lives are in mortal danger every minute. Certainly, a local Rov would give such a psak which people can be soimeach (i.e. rely) on, considering the situation. To live under such barbaric, cruel, inhumane and psychologically debilitating conditions is a saconos nefoshos (i.e. a constant mortal threat to life). Japan is in clear violation of International Prisoner and Humane Laws. They are rotzchim, achzorim, true ovdei elilim and shocnei ofor. They boys have been shown to have been ‘set up’ by criminal elements. There are many groups and organizations who protest and have protested against the Japanese, that can help our cause.
The lives of the other 2 bochurim sentenced to 12 years imprisonment, and of the bochur newely sentenced to 5 years, are in grave danger. They could be in the state of a ‘shoitah’ i.e. a ‘basket’ case mentally or lose their mind, or their lives (chas v’cholila). It won’t make much difference in the long run (may be too late), but in the intemediate term, freeing them will give them back their lives.
Demonstrations from our point are painless, a chance to do a fabulous mitzvah, help our brothers and show achdus with klal yisroel. It also shows great ahavas yisroel, emunas chachomim, ahavas torah and yiras shomayim and is a great kiddush hashem. You can also get plenty of fresh air. Bring a sefer along by all means and you won’t have to lose any time from learning torah!
Because of the bad economic situation worldwide and more so in Japan, any boycott of Japan will yield quick results and they will free or transfer the boys.
May 1, 2009 3:09 pm at 3:09 pm #643895Pashuteh YidMemberChaimkl, do you have any evidence, or are you just getting all hysterical. Your description of the Japanese in one of your posts is highly insulting and probably untrue. Also, these boys knew they were doing illegal stuff thinking they were trying to smuggle antiques to avoid taxes. While we should be mispallel for their welfare, turning this into a one-sided cause of the evil Japanese against the poor innocent Jewish boys is sheker and will cause real anti-semitism and a lack of credibility for times when we really need help from others.
May 1, 2009 5:08 pm at 5:08 pm #643896Pashuteh YidMemberPhyllis, if anything, we should be more careful with Dina Dmalchusa Dina, as that is the direct cause of their predicament.
May 1, 2009 6:43 pm at 6:43 pm #643897chaimkl22MemberTo: Pashuteh Yid
Your allegation that “the boys knew what they were doing” shows your a phony and a jew hater masquerading under a pious name; definately not a ‘pashuteh yid’. Also your Ahavas Yisroel stinks. If the Japanese thought the boys “knew what they were doing”, they would be sentenced to very long terms.
The facts have proven otherwise and it’s accepted they were tricked. We’re talking about pikuach nefesh here (life threatening)…they don’t deserve being locked up in a torture chamber that is Japanese Prison. Only Nazis do that to Jews. Get it? Maybe if you sat in any Jail for a while (even to try it out for a year), you wouldn’t have the chutzpah or be so quick and easy with your words, to judge and condemn other Jews.
May 1, 2009 7:49 pm at 7:49 pm #643898Pashuteh YidMemberChaimkl, if you are a family member, then I deeply apologize. I really hope they get out quick and back to EY. However, we must still not use harsh language about another country without knowing all the facts, especially considering that others posted here that the conditions are standard, as far as prison goes. I have no way of knowing.
However, it is true that we must all be mechazek our dina dmlachusa, if for no other reason than they must have been asked by security if anybody gave them anything, and if they packed their bags themselves, which are standard, especially in Israel. Chas vshalom a terrorist could have given them a bomb. We must follow the laws and answer questions truthfully. It doesn’t mean that they should go to prison for a long time, but we must use this as a lesson so nobody else gets into this kind of situation in the future.
