what is your opinion on crowding 3 adults in the back row on a long journey?
personally i always say full car when i have 3 passengers but i keep getting told im being selfish. (of course if someone is genuinely stuck for a ride im happy to crowd)
what do you think?
November 12, 2013 2:04 pm at 2:04 pm #987507notasheepMemberThe middle seat is not always a proper seat and someone will get squashed. It really depends on the passengers – if none of them mind being shoulder-to-cheek with someone else, or if it’s a short trip then fine.
November 12, 2013 2:18 pm at 2:18 pm #987508Privileged To Be AMemberEmor Ma’at Va’asai Harbeh…
The more mitzvos you can do the better, and perhaps, possibly but probably unlikely, you might get a small donation ”towards fuel” from one of four moaning backseat drivers…
November 12, 2013 2:30 pm at 2:30 pm #987509MurphysLawMemberMotorbikes are designed to carry One Rider + optional passenger.
Two Seater vehicles are designed to carry two passengers.
Three seater vehicles are designed to carry three passengers.
Four seater vehicles are designed to carry four passengers
Five seater vehicles are generally designed to carry five passengers safely, albeit squashed.
Six seater vehicles are designed to carry six.
Seven seater vehicles are designed to carry seven.
Eight – Sixteen their respective amount of passengers.
Any more seats needed one should think about buying a coach or chartering a tram for in-town trips and a train, plane or ship for cross country/continental trips.
Don’t forget a packed lunch and/or W/C visit first…
Hope you had a smile from this post, as jam-packed cars are no joke!
November 12, 2013 3:07 pm at 3:07 pm #987510🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantthere are three seat belts, why wouldn’t that be considered three seats?
November 12, 2013 3:17 pm at 3:17 pm #987511popa_bar_abbaParticipantI’m with OP on this. When I give people rides, I cap it at 3 passengers unless there is a really great need.
November 12, 2013 3:22 pm at 3:22 pm #987512brentoutParticipantIt sounds like you guys regularly pick up hitchhikers. How often do you get random requests for a ride altogether, let along four people asking you for a ride?
November 12, 2013 4:45 pm at 4:45 pm #987513ED IT ORParticipantno not hitch hikers just i come from a large family and a very large extended family plus a lot of social so anything to do with faily or friends becomes a lift gemach.
i once had that someone took a child to an out of town simche and didnt arange a way back “because one of the NO NAMES will sort a way back for him”, now thats what i call advantage taking

You get what you’re looking for.
November 12, 2013 6:58 pm at 6:58 pm #987515notasheepMemberIn some of the smaller cars, that middle seat is really only big enough for a young child or a very skinny person.
We once came back from the airport 3 men and 2 ladies (me and my mother in law). One of the men drove, so where did that leave us ladies? Couldn’t let my MIL sit in the back, so I did, and spent fifteen very uncomfortable minutes trying to make sure that I was still shomer negiya. Will not do that again in a hurry.

was it not a little sheepish not to make a seating plan before going to the airport…
Or taken an aforementioned larger vehicle?
Apologies I couldn’t avoid the pun!
November 13, 2013 12:39 pm at 12:39 pm #987517jewishfeminist02MemberI understand not wanting to crowd and think it’s perfectly reasonable to only take 3 passengers. However, being that there is a functional fourth passenger seat, I think it’s disingenuous to use the term “full car” in that situation.
As far as the crowding itself– ask the passengers! I personally think the convenience of the ride outweighs the discomfort of being squished, and although I’m tall for a woman, I don’t mind being the one to take the middle seat. I do know, however, that other people feel differently.

What happens when you get a subtitle? will it read privelaged to be a Incorrigible; semi-retarded; eccentric; perhaps a man; somewhere between mean and average; sometimes only a bit over the top; arbitrarily engaged in cynicism?
Anyways im thinking before casting your vote on the crowding issue everyone should have to state weather they have ever sat for 3 or more hours on a back row with 3 adults on.
November 13, 2013 1:51 pm at 1:51 pm #987520☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI don’t know the right answer; I’d probably squeeze a third in, but I don’t know how anyone could call you selfish for making sure your passengers are comfortable.
November 13, 2013 3:55 pm at 3:55 pm #987521miritchkaMemberI will not squish people into my van. I have an eight seater with 8 seatbelts. I dont care if i have to drive more often in carpool due to less families in the carpool, i will not allow anyone to ride in my van without a seatbelt – sharing a seatbelt is not an option.
November 14, 2013 12:13 pm at 12:13 pm #987522ED IT ORParticipantFluke of flukes: on the day i ask this question someones hits my car!
so now the question is, is it a sign i am right as i will be getting lots of insurance or is it proof i am wrong that after i write this someone hits my car!
November 14, 2013 2:24 pm at 2:24 pm #987523popa_bar_abbaParticipantLet’s also just make explicit that there’s a difference between a full size car like a Camry, and a compact like an Echo.
November 14, 2013 4:07 pm at 4:07 pm #987524☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantPBA, and the size of the passengers.
November 15, 2013 1:29 pm at 1:29 pm #987525notasheepMemberPTBA it was kind of spontaneous, we went to a wedding in London which was in a hotel next to the airport, so it’s very convenient to just fly back first thing in the morning. Problem was that people who got a lift down with those who drove but wanted to be back first thing got a plane back, so there were quite a few people who needed a lift home from the airport afterwards.
November 18, 2013 2:54 pm at 2:54 pm #987526ED IT ORParticipantA full sized car is still a squish, in my messerschmidt there is 3 fullish sized seats in the back but i still wouldnt try to squish 3 full sized adults.
November 18, 2013 3:30 pm at 3:30 pm #987527Derech AgavParticipantI feel that if its the law. its the law. you have to think before you add the fourth person it shouldnt be a habit. also sometimes an adult in the middle seat bocks your veiw outside the back window… think safe!
