January 2, 2013 10:27 pm at 10:27 pm #919557Joe27MemberDear NJ_Mom,
I am very sorry that you are having a bad experience with Touro College. Can you be more specific on what problems or difficulties you are having? I know many students who attend the women and men divisions and are very satisfied with the education and administration. I also personally know many Touro professors who try very hard to work with each student to make sure they understand the course material. I am not saying Touro is top notch school but maybe your son had a hard time with a particular teacher or a staff member. I don’t think its fair to judge a whole school this way.
January 3, 2013 1:41 am at 1:41 am #919558Torah613TorahParticipantI went to Touro, and loved it. It’s a matter of finding the right professors and making sure that your department is a good one (or at least that you are happy with the quality of teaching.)
January 3, 2013 3:21 am at 3:21 am #919559shtarkzichMemberBe sure the course you are thinking of taking is properly accredited and that any promises or claims regarding what this course will do for you are in WRITING!
January 3, 2013 3:46 am at 3:46 am #919560akupermaParticipantTouro is a broad range of schools. Some are better than others. It is typically more friendly to frum Yidden than any American university (excluding parts of Yeshiva University, and not considering online-only schools). It is more expensive than public universities (CUNY, Maryland, Rutgers, etc.), but usually cheaper than the high quality private schools (such as Columbia, John Hopkins, etc.). Touro is NOT famous for high academic standards (which is good if your transcript is not known for high academic standards, but that means the degree is less prestigious than one from a school with a better reputation for academics).
January 3, 2013 4:04 am at 4:04 am #919561It’s not what it used to be. Just take a walk over one evening during sessions and visit the office, speak to the people and students and you’ll see for yourself.
January 3, 2013 4:12 am at 4:12 am #919562greatestMemberIf you look at U.S. News & World Report salary rankings, you will notice Touro graduates have one of the highest average salaries. Higher, in fact, than graduates of many prestigious universities, including some of the Ivy Leagues.
January 3, 2013 3:02 pm at 3:02 pm #919563anon1m0usParticipantGreatest: You must receive the Lakewood Edition of the US News & World Report. Touro is ranked 104 on the list with a tuition approx. $15K. Compared to Brooklyn College where Chaim Berlin and other yeshiva students go, it is ranked at #55 with only $6K tuition. In addition, Touro accepts 68.9% of students applying (Probably because money talks) compared to Brooklyn College that accepts only 28.2%.
My regular US News & World Report, not the Lakewood Edition, lists all the Ivy League schools surpassing Touro in every area.
Here is how the IVY League Schools Rank:
Brown University=#15
Columbia University=#4
Cornell=#15
Dartmouth College=#10
Harvard University=#1
Princeton University=#1
University of Pennsylvania=#8
Yale University= #3
Here is a comparison between Brooklyn & Touro, since they both are in the same geographical area.
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/brooklyn-college-2687
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/touro-college-10142
I do not know how you determined salaries since I could not find that on the reports, but I did find the Busienssweek which refutes that idea. It states that graduates from Ivy League earn the biggest salaries. Here is a link to Payscale which Business week bases their finding.
http://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report-2013/ivy-league-schools
But as my esteemed yeshiva classmates used to say when they discovered I was going to go to Touro College (College itself is a blasphemous word), Touro is a pig that has the semonim of being kosher but it is pure treif; so I decided to go pure treif and transferred to Brooklyn 🙂
January 3, 2013 4:04 pm at 4:04 pm #919564zahavasdadParticipantI am sure most who condem college as “treif” have never even taken a college course
January 3, 2013 5:37 pm at 5:37 pm #919565HealthParticipantanon1m0us – I also went to Touro and don’t hate it like you do.
Instead of insinuating that poster (“greatest”) is a liar because of your bias – all you had to do was ask him for his source!
E/o knows the rankings that you quoted and quite frankly those rankings are Not as important as salary rankings. But you’re scared that you might not be right in regards to Touro -so you wrote this long-winded post. And your rank out of Lakewood is duly noted.
January 3, 2013 6:00 pm at 6:00 pm #919566popa_bar_abbaParticipantI am sure most who condem college as “treif” have never even taken a college course
Neither have I eaten pig. So what.
January 3, 2013 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm #9195672scentsParticipantI think that it really depends on what you want to achieve, if it is just to become a PA, then Touro might be a good choice.
However if you need a prestigious degree, then it might not be the best option.
January 3, 2013 6:23 pm at 6:23 pm #919568HealthParticipantanon1m0us – I also went to Payscale and this is what I found:
“Rank School Name Region School Type
191 – tie Touro College (New York) Northeast Private Schools
Starting Salary Mid-Career Salary
$50,200 $84,000
% with High Job Meaning
58%”
Touro is ranked – just from it’s four year college, not from any of it’s Grad schools, 191 out of over a thousand colleges listed!
And the % with High Job Meaning is higher than even Princeton Univ.
January 3, 2013 6:49 pm at 6:49 pm #919569greatestMemberanon1m0us: I’m very sorry that you failed reading comprehension in grade school and that Brooklyn College was unable to bring you up to par. Nevertheless, the only point I addressed was graduate salary levels. Not student tuition costs. Not education quality. And not any of the myriad of subjects you threw in for good measure. Only graduates salary levels.
Now I am sorry that since (as you said) “you could not find that” you shlepped in some other magazine making a general statement that Ivy League grads make the biggest salaries. That ia true though does not refute the point I made. And that is that Touro College graduates, on average, earn higher salaries than graduates of some (though not most) of the most prestigious colleges, including earning on average higher salaries than the average salary of graduates of some of the Ivy Leagues. This information is directly from the salary rankings (and they do rank average salaries earned by graduates of the various colleges — even though you “could not find that” as it is not freely available on the web) by U.S. News & World Report.
January 3, 2013 8:05 pm at 8:05 pm #919570anon1m0usParticipantIn addition, I never stated I hated Touro. The OP asked information on Touro which I responded to 1) higher tuition, 2) Ranked 104 compared to other in state colleges, and 3) its high school. As I stated, if you liked High School, you enjoyed Touro. The long winded post was to provide the OP a detailed listing of how the colleges rank and I took your advice and included the Mid Career Salary below; which still shows that Ivy League Schools outrank Touro in Salary. This is all for Undergrad!
Greatest: Can you please enlighten this forum which Ivy League school graduate earns less than a Touro Graduate?
Here are the Mid Career Salaries from Payscale (http://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report-2013/full-list-of-schools)
Brown University=$109K
Columbia University=$105k
Cornell=#102K
Dartmouth College=$111K
Harvard University=$111
Princeton University=$137
University of Pennsylvania=$102K
Yale University=$105K
The only interesting thing to note your condescending tone when people disagree with you, a quality you must have picked up in your education. True, maybe my education is not up to par as yours, however, I did learn to provide sources from all my statements which I have done and not just quoted garbage and have people assume it is fact. If you feel my statements are incorrect, please be a mentch and show me your source so I do not have to rely on Google to provide me with it. Is it that difficult to copy and paste a link? If you need assistance in that area, please let me know so I can show you how to properly right click on your mouse.
January 3, 2013 8:19 pm at 8:19 pm #919571akupermaParticipantIf you have the grades and scores to go to NYU or Columbia, they are better schools than Touro. If you can get into a public university (e.g.CUNY or SUNY for a New Yorkers), the in-state tuition is much cheaper. Some people lack the grades to get into a public university, and they’ll find Touro is an option. Some people find a co-ed non-Jewish environment to be too intimidating if not hostile, and Touro is an answer.
January 3, 2013 8:38 pm at 8:38 pm #919572anon1m0usParticipantakuperma: Nicely summed up.
January 3, 2013 9:00 pm at 9:00 pm #919573greatestMemberanon1m0us: I apologize that I cannot raise your reading comprehension via this discussion board. But for the third time, the source is U.S. News & World Report. Which part of that do you fail to comprehend? And as I previously stated, the report is not freely available on the web, thus there are no links. But please do feel free to purchase the report for approximately $35. You will then see what I refer to. This site honors copyright laws.
January 3, 2013 9:24 pm at 9:24 pm #919574plonis3141Memberanon1m0us – A little silly to be comparing Touro with Ivy leagues, even if Did anyone think Touro was an Ivy league school?
Also, I imagine that someone looking into Touro is doing so because it is Jewish and that men and women are separate. Why is everyone here comparing it to secular colleges? Someone going to Touro is making that choice, even though it may not be as academically or financially “worthwhile”, because they feel that they gain something that is not available elsewhere – the environment.

All I am doing is enlightening some people whose misconception that Touro’s salary potential is greater than Ivy League. As a frum person, I felt compelled to stand for truth and thus the conversation. You are correct, that people pick Touro because of the environment, as Akuperma nicely put it.

“I said Touro is another 4 years of High School where people insult and speak to one another in condescending tone of voice”.
Did you go to Touro? Or is this a typical case of “oif der ganev brent di huttel”?
Oh, and anecdotally, where I work there are Touro graduates as well as Ivy League graduates including several with PhD’s. And a number of the Touro Graduates have higher positions and make more.

Guess what? I did not attend an Ivy League college and I make above the Mid Career Salaries listed for Ivy League. However, the statement remains accurate that in general, Ivy League graduates will make more than Touro. I don’t see why people feel otherwise or get upset with that statement.

January 4, 2013 4:15 am at 4:15 am #919586KaylieMemberHey!
I actually just got back from class now. I take 18 credits this semester. Price per credit is $620. They actually just raised it.
The thing about Touro is that they have only one good advisor, thereby ensuring that you stay there as long as possible. This way they make the most money off you. I have personal experience with this!
Secondly, they claim to have censored all the teachers materials. I have personally sat through a class all about Freud and in depth too, numerous times.
My experience with Touro, being on the CPA track is so far quite lousy. It is quite unfortunate!

You might not have stated you hate it outright, but it was quite obvious from your post. So if you don’t hate it how could you make a blanket statement that it’s high school? Which Touro is high school -the one on 23rd St. in Manhattan or the one in Flatbush? Or perhaps all of them are even though they have schools all over the world? Even if your statement was true, it can’t even be LH, only Motzay Shem Ra because you can’t possibly know about every single Touro college. But this didn’t stop you from speaking about all of them.
I think you should have been more concerned where you went to Yeshiva than which college you went to. You obviously didn’t have much of an education when it comes to the laws of LH!
