I have posted this pet peeve of mine several times, but I would like to hear if I am the only one who feels this way. Much has been written regarding our need to cut back in simchas and on gashmiyus in general. I cannot see how the Torah community can preach these ideals when their convention takes place in the lap of luxury? If people would not come otherwise then that is a very sad commentary on our values. You may argue that only the fancy hotels have conference rooms, etc. then why do these “missions to identify with Israel” have to stay in the Jerusalem Plaza or Ramada, is there no other way to show your support? These missions to me (and many in Eretz Yisrael) are an excuse for people coming on vacation. Can’t we live life simply? The example set by our Torah organizations would go a long way in people cutting down on their weddings.

Need the ability to have a complete A/V solution that will not conk out in the middle. You need parking facility for all the attendees. Keep in mind that there will be some high profile guests, who you need to impress at some level (venue, number of attendees, quality of food served etc.). With every investment the committee expects a return. They need to choose those with the greatest returns based on the resources on hand. This is just off the top of my head and I never arranged one of these dinners.

If the yeshivas could figure out a way to avoid the $200 per couple overhead for the dinners, I’m sure they would have done it. but it’s difficult. People expect opulence. You can get a better glimpse of the yeshiva’s values by seeing how the roshei yeshiva live. Do they live in opulence, or in litvish simplicity?
