What did Giuliani do that Bloomberg isnt doing? Or, is it frustaration with the economy? Or, is it something else?
September 6, 2011 5:10 am at 5:10 am #806440apushatayidParticipantThe mets are out of it, footbal season didn’t start yet and with the NBA players locked out they don’t have the summer league to keep them busy.
September 6, 2011 5:32 am at 5:32 am #806441WIYMemberTime to crack down on illegal gun possession and impose a very strict sentence. Its only a matter of time before the owner of an illegal gun decides to use it.

Oh. Were these shootings committed with illegal guns?
September 6, 2011 6:02 am at 6:02 am #806443chaimssParticipantMaybe if more people owned legal guns…

Ummm, we’re way past that time, sir.

Right meaning that those who get hold of them tend to use them. So something has got to be done about this.
September 6, 2011 6:50 am at 6:50 am #806446am yisrael chaiParticipantWIY
That’s true, but concretely how does the administration go about resolving this violence?
September 6, 2011 6:55 am at 6:55 am #806447popa_bar_abbaParticipantWait, you confused me.
Standard logic is that when crimes are committed with legal guns, that argues for more gun control laws- since perhaps the guns would not have been in their hands if it was illegal.
When crimes are committed with illegal guns, that argues that gun control was ineffective and so is pointless, and if anything makes it more dangerous for the law abiding who are unarmed.
You are adding a twist that perhaps the penalties are just not strict enough.
In NY, criminal possession of a weapon has 4 degrees, and ranges from a class A misdemeanor to a class B felony. The penalties range from a maximum of one year on prison to 25 years in prison. Additionally, most offenders will usually fall into at least the second level, since if you have previously committed any crime (and illegal gun owners probably have), it is at least 3d degree which is a class D felony.
What would you like the punishment to be?
September 6, 2011 7:07 am at 7:07 am #806448WIYMemberPopa
Well it would certainly be worse with looser gun laws.
Maybe the govt should restriction how many guns are put into circulation and have a system for keeping track of every gun so that they know which gun was sold to whom. Im assuming some system is in place but its obviously not that thorough as too many guns are slipping through the cracks.

“What would you like the punishment to be?”
Perhaps you take a shot at the answer first…;)
September 6, 2011 11:28 am at 11:28 am #806450apushatayidParticipantThe law should be, anyone who commits a crime with an illegal gun (I know the more lomdush will claim the act of owning the gun is in of itself illegal) should be forced to play russian roulette. If they win, they go to trial as they would now. If they lose, saves us taxpayers a few dollars
September 6, 2011 11:32 am at 11:32 am #806451ToiParticipantpopa- having to listen to a certain someones diatribe on the US’ legal system.
September 6, 2011 4:55 pm at 4:55 pm #806452Raphael KaufmanMemberPBA, from the reports in the local papers it appears that all of the guns used in this past weekend’s mayhem were posessed illegally as all of the shooters were additionally charged with illegal posession.
PY, no lomdus in the world could conclude that owning a gun, per se, is illegal.
Unfortunately, there seems to be a world wide increase in hooliganism which seems to be the proximate cause of the violence. I’ll leave to Charlie Hall and others to debate the ultimate cause.
September 6, 2011 6:27 pm at 6:27 pm #806453apushatayidParticipantI wrote it quickly and on my bberry. What I meant to write was “the more lomdush will argue that owning an illegal gun is in of itself a crime”, so by owning the gun, he already commited a crime. forget it, one it has to be explained, it loses its taam.
September 7, 2011 3:12 am at 3:12 am #806454EzratHashemMemberThe criminals who used to be tethered to their PCs & laptops at home are now roaming the streets carrying smartphones.
