The mods have been enforcing this for a while already, but now it is in the official rules: All posts must be kept on topic.
Why?
Most discussions lead into another discussion. If we’re discussing going to camp, and someone says they don’t go to camp because they go to the “kohntree” instead, isn’t it natural for the discussion to turn to bungalow colonies (assuming the camp discussion is finished, as most discussions are after the first two posts).
Must we artificially engineer our conversations here? I know that Obama is President of the US, and Big Brother may well be on his way to power, but can’t the CR remain independent for as long as possible?
January 26, 2009 10:07 pm at 10:07 pm #634923coke not pepsiMemberi dont get it -what does it have to do with obama?
January 26, 2009 10:09 pm at 10:09 pm #634924notpashutMemberSo what do you think about Bloomberg’s chances of re-election?
January 26, 2009 10:11 pm at 10:11 pm #634925areivimzehlazehParticipantsqueak- so tell me, are you annoyed, upset, frustrated at the turn of events? At the setting up of these rules? You can confide in me- I’m your psychologist after all
(is this off topic?)
January 26, 2009 10:33 pm at 10:33 pm #634926YW Moderator-72Participantplease feel free to discuss whether of not a topic should stay on topic or be allowed to stray off topic however if this topic strays from the topic of allowing topics to stray or not stray then the moderators will have to decide if the stray was still in someway connected to the topic or if the stray strayed to far from topic to allow continuation of the thread
have fun :o)
if there was ever a post that should be deleted for grammatical reasons, this is it – but… it is on topic :o)
January 26, 2009 10:37 pm at 10:37 pm #634927qwertyuiopMembermod72: yes, horrible grammar.$
i think that if all threads were to stay on topic, then the CR wouldn’t be fun.$just my opinionn.$
January 26, 2009 10:40 pm at 10:40 pm #634928areivimzehlazehParticipantsqueak- they can’t do this to us, I won’t allow this bullying
(this is on topic because I vote that topics should not HAVE to necessarily stay on topic)
January 26, 2009 11:06 pm at 11:06 pm #634929beaconParticipantMod72- 🙂
And squeak- I’m with you all the way
January 26, 2009 11:24 pm at 11:24 pm #634930oomisParticipantSo how about them Knicks??????
January 26, 2009 11:36 pm at 11:36 pm #634931moish01Membermoderator-72
i think i’m exempt from that rule whatever it was. why? because i speak english. and hebrew and a coupla yiddish and spanish words here and there. but that post isn’t even remotely related to any of the above languages.
January 26, 2009 11:53 pm at 11:53 pm #634932squeakParticipantqwertyuiop, my thoughts exactly.
On those lines,
How many ADD kids does it take to change a lightbulb?
Wanna go bike riding?
January 27, 2009 12:31 am at 12:31 am #634933JosephParticipantthere should be some leeway in allowing off topic posts; but it should not be allowed to stray completely into high school chatter.
January 27, 2009 12:39 am at 12:39 am #634934syriansephardiMemberQawertyuiop: agreed!!!!
January 27, 2009 12:48 am at 12:48 am #634935SJSinNYCMemberI have no problem with the natural progressions, but sometimes the topic strays far from anything close to the original topic. I would say maybe within 1-2 standard deviations is fine…more than that…eh.
January 27, 2009 1:52 am at 1:52 am #634936skatesMembernotpashut…you gave me a good laugh!!
January 27, 2009 1:57 am at 1:57 am #634937jphoneMemberIf you wear a hat and jacket when blogging, it is muttar to stray as far from the original topic as you’d like.
January 27, 2009 2:09 am at 2:09 am #634939moish01MemberSJS – more than that is borderline “mental retardation” or “gifted”?
January 27, 2009 2:30 am at 2:30 am #634940asdfghjklParticipantqwertyuiop is right!!! then the cr would’t be fun anymore!!! i’m just sayin……
January 27, 2009 4:44 am at 4:44 am #634941qwertyuiopMemberi mean it wouldn’t be much fun discussing beetles all day, would it.$
January 27, 2009 10:25 am at 10:25 am #634942PhyllisMemberFor those of you that think its fun when discussions dont stay on topic, are obviosly not interested in a good discussion. You are just in the mood of writing whatever comes to mind. I enjoy a GOOD lengthy heated discussion, especially where no one knows who I am so I can say what I REALLY think. When they get off topic then u dont get a complete thought with EVERYONE’s opinion.
January 27, 2009 2:56 pm at 2:56 pm #634943NobodyMemberSqueak it’s really quite clear why the moderators have enforced these rules. No-one ia talking about artificially engineering converations. It is about staying within the boundaries of the topic.
I, as well as many people who log onto the Coffeeroom do not want to continuously read personal information about people or some of the sheer rubbish being posted. Nor do I wish to engage in childish banter befitting of kids. The moderators have waited until now in the hope that it would settle down. But it hasn’t and of late the Coffeeroom has lost the way slightly and people need to be brought back on track.
The YWN Coffeeroom is not a central meeting room for bloggers. It is a site where people can and should be encouraged to express views on different aspects of life and where we can freely reply and debate without engaging in school like nonsense.
I am not saying you cannot engage in humor or lightweight topics – just keep the personal back and forth chit chat and childish nonsense out of the equation.
January 27, 2009 4:18 pm at 4:18 pm #634944squeakParticipantOK, Nobody, take the CoffeeRoom and subtract the personal conversations and sheer rubbish. What do you have left? Might as well cancel those advertising contracts now.
I’m not saying you can’t express views on different aspects of life, but since those views are few and far between why enforce silence in between?
SJS, if you allow plus or minus 1.96 standard deviations then you’ve covered 95% of all topics of conversation.
Joseph, I agree with you that limits should be set. I just think that the bar is too low.
January 27, 2009 5:23 pm at 5:23 pm #634946squeakParticipant…er, update: Assuming that conversations are normally distributed, that is.
January 27, 2009 8:10 pm at 8:10 pm #634947NobodyMemberThere is personal and personal. The point I was trying to make was quite simple.
A topic personal to someone i.e shidduchum, the weather or anything on a mundane level is fine but when the chat gets personal i.e The back and forth banter between two people then that’s not fine.
Why would advertisers cancel their contracts? because there is no personal interaction between two bloggers, Please, give me a break. These companies advertise on YWN because of the people who log onto the entire site and for no other reason.
The Coffee Room never has an enforced silence there is plenty to talk about – it just doesn’t have to be on a personal level
January 27, 2009 8:35 pm at 8:35 pm #634948SJSinNYCMemberSqueak, but one would only be 68.27% 🙂
The truth is, 95% is sort of ok. I agree that its the back and forth banter (that doesnt really involve actual conversations) is what the problem is.
January 27, 2009 8:42 pm at 8:42 pm #634949areivimzehlazehParticipantPhyllis- are you enjoying this long, heated, on topic discussion?
January 27, 2009 8:46 pm at 8:46 pm #634950PhyllisMember“I, as well as many people who log onto the Coffeeroom do not want to continuously read personal information about people or some of the sheer rubbish being posted. Nor do I wish to engage in childish banter befitting of kids.”
Nobody, I agree with u 100%, in fact couldnt have written it better myself.
January 27, 2009 9:14 pm at 9:14 pm #634951moish01Memberareivim – good one!
January 27, 2009 9:21 pm at 9:21 pm #634952squeakParticipantIn fact, nobody could have written it better. Hey, she did!
______________________________________________________________________
There is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.
January 27, 2009 10:27 pm at 10:27 pm #634953squeakParticipantYes, ames. I hereby declare that no one is allowed to post in any of MY threads, without obtaining prior written permission from me, signed in triplicate.
That goes for you, too, mods!
Mazal, I don’t remember giving you permission.
January 27, 2009 10:28 pm at 10:28 pm #634954areivimzehlazehParticipantNobody is a she?
January 27, 2009 10:30 pm at 10:30 pm #634955mazal77Participantbut what if that person, starts a thread and just can’t be around to decide if it should go off topic?? The Mods’ do try for the most part but some of the banter does get though. All guilty parties know who they are!!
January 27, 2009 10:38 pm at 10:38 pm #634956moish01Memberwhat’s the sentence? i need to know how i should plead.
January 28, 2009 1:40 am at 1:40 am #634957teenMemberJoseph: im in high school (well..kind of) what do u have against high school banter?
a conversation can only last so long before people run out of things to say…then u switch the topic
January 28, 2009 1:46 am at 1:46 am #634958moish01Memberguess what, everyone? (sorry squeak, we need an exception to the rule now – i have a new revelation) all teen said so far was about three sentences but i have a feeling we’re gonna be REALLY good friends… for the next day till i get my cast off… then it’s football time! 😉
