    Hello All,

    I was wondering if anyone has any tips for maintaining a healthy immune system. Now that it’s Elul, and I’m sfardi, I have slichos I attend daily before vasikin (4:50 am), I go to sleep around 10:45- 11, that leaves me only about 5.5-6 hours of sleep per night the next month. I really do not want to get sick.

    Any suggestions ?

    “Silver – The Dark Side of a New Health Craze

    Ads for it litter the Internet and alternative health magazines. “Phyto-silver” (such as in the product previously sold by Seasilver USA until the Federal Trade Commission cracked down on them in June, 2003), colloidal silver, metallic silver, and silver salts are being promoted as the new germ-killing regimen. These writers and silver manufacturers cite hundreds or even thousands of years of “safe use” of silver for fighting germs and enhancing health. “Seasilver” was sold by a “multi-level marketing” (MLM) organization, so that the claims of efficacy were magnified by thousands of people who really wanted to believe in what they are selling to their friends and neighbors.

    Silver is toxic

    But for more than 40 years we have known that silver is a hard, proven carcinogen – a cancer-causing agent. Metallic silver is listed in the 1979 Registry of Toxic Effects as causing cancer in animals. Claims that it is safe have come primarily from the companies that make silver products – hardly a trustworthy source of unbiased information. Silver in any form is a bio-accumulative toxic heavy metal, like mercury, lead, and arsenic. Its action as an antibiotic comes from the fact that it is a non-selective toxic “biocide…….”

    Wow, don’t take my advice then. 🙂 I take Silver when I start to get sick and it really helps. We got it from the local health food store, and they seem to know what they are talking about. But that’s scary!

    In humans, accidental or intentional ingestion of large doses of silver nitrate has produced corrosive

    damage of the gastrointestinal tract, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, shock, convulsions, and death (U.S.

    EPA, 1985). Respiratory irritation was noted following acute inhalation exposure to silver or silver

    compounds. Silver nitrate solutions are highly irritating to the skin, mucous membranes, and eyes (Stokinger,

    1981).

    Ingestion, inhalation, or dermal absorption of silver may cause argyria, the most common indicator of

    long-term exposure to silver or silver compounds in humans. Argyria is a gray or blue-gray, permanent

    discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes that is not a toxic effect per se, but is considered

    cosmetically disfiguring. Chronic inhalation exposure of workers to silver oxide and silver nitrate dusts

    resulted in upper and lower respiratory irritation, deposition of granular silver-containing deposits in the eyes,

    impaired night vision, and abdominal pain (Rosenman et al., 1979). Mild allergic responses have been

    attributed to dermal contact with silver (ATSDR, 1990).

    In long-term oral studies with experimental animals, silver compounds have produced slight thickening

    of the basement membranes of the renal glomeruli, growth depression, shortened lifespan, and granular silvercontaining

    deposits in skin, eyes, and internal organs (Matuk et al., 1981; Olcott, 1948, 1950). Hypoactivity

    was seen in rats subchronically exposed to silver nitrate in drinking water (Rungby and Danscher, 1984).

    Vitamin D IS very important, along with zinc, C, and B12. Studies are suggesting that K is also showing itself to be helpful in a good diet.

    Thanks, Mod. Seems like all I’ve been doing is bad 🙂

    When I get an eye infection I put it on and it helps. Guess I shouldn’t do that anymore.

    Guess I should rephrase, how could something that helps people get healthier be dangerous at the same time?

    I think that walking across niagra falls without a net is extremely exhilarating because there is that factor that you could die. It’s a rush people get from doing something stupid. There was an article on aish.com about it.

    Somebody told me besides the vitamin C and d3 intake- to eat lots of whole wheat bread, drink herbal tea, and lay off teh soda (I drink a ton of soda)- are any of these suggestions substantiatable ?

    ef613 – there IS such a thing as taking a nap. Ever thought of that? i know someone who wakes up @ 4 am on a regular morning, they go to sleep around 11pm but their schedule leaves them with time during the day to take a 1/2 hr nap. Try it if you can. It’s really amazing how much better youll feel.

    this isn’t a health tip, but it’s a tip to help you wake up. I know someone who drinks a cup of coffee before going to sleep and it helps them wake up. hard to imagine but if they said it works…….

    Moderator-80, you keep writing “silver nitrate or “silver compound” (which means other metals mixed in). And I heard that’s where the problems really are, in the extra metals.

    What about 100% pure silver?

    Vitamin C’ -3000mg is A parable amount. I have A good experience from it.

    There is A partner to vit. C called Bio-flavonoids, it is best when it’s the same amount.

    Be careful with Bio-flavonoids! It can be mixed other Metals in it. “Maxi Health” is trustful and Certified for cleanness, and for all their Products, what I know.

    Kyolic comes in pill form.Simcha also has a direct effect on health.

    eclipse Simcha is a good one, being happy will help improve your immune system. Thank Hashem for giving you health to do your Avodas Hashem. Vitamin D with Calcium and Magnesium with Omega 3 Fish Oils will help must be Kosher, and follow directions on the label of the bottle. Using a Neti Pot irrigating both nostrils with tepid water adding about one eighth teaspoon of sea Salt is good. Olive Leaf Extract (must be kosher) is good. Elderbery Syrup with a hechtsher is good. Echinacea, Astragalus extracts kosher are good. Cinnamon, Clove, Rosemary, Lemon, Eucalyptus Globulus or Radiata, Lemon Tea Tree Oil- all Essential Oils are anti viral. Pomegranate has alot of antioxidents which is good for boosting the immune system. Making Ginger Tea or cooking with fresh Ginger Root is good for the immune system.

    Eat healthy diet, a HUGE dose of Vitamin C will not do you any good, your body will just dispose of 99% of it. Yo are going to literally be pissing your money away. I would also suggest some physical activity such as running.

    Zach you are right, eating a well balanced diet, and exerercising and keeping th body from deteriorating is so important. Biking and exploring the wonderful Bike Trails is what I want to do.

    Learn Torah. It’s the best thing for the immune system.

    The vitamin/diet thing is pointless. No studies have ever shown an increase in life span using any of these wacko eating styles.

    Only on Headache the G’morah says -C’hosh B’roshoh Y’aasok B’torah -Be occupied in Torah.

    How strange it is to be attacked for suggesting that someone learn Torah.

    As to my second point, that none of these diets or supplements have ever been proven to be effective (increase life span) , I am willing to be proven wrong. Bring me the proof.

    Real silver IS toxic.

    The product called SeaSilver did NOT actually contain silver.

    I am not sure if it is still being sold, but NOT because of the silver issue. I believe they were just making unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits of their product.

    It has been studied for Thousands of years (it’s controversial anyway) that Whole food Diet is Vital and important, the most right full one, Enjoying enough, Tasty enough and what else not.

    Shlomo no one would ever disagree about the sanctity of Hashems Torah, everybody must be diligent and do whatever possible to guard and protect their health. If ones physical health is not good, then how can they learn Torah and do their Avodas Hashem? Doing whatever possible to have vibrant and healthy immune system, is so important where you are living in the Northern Hemisphere Brookyn NY. area. Especially December with decreased healing UV rays from the sun.

    I did hear that studying Torah makes one feel better. My friend had a headache and wasn’t feeling well once and then we had a Navi class and afterwards when I asked her if she wanted Tylenol she said her headache went away.
