OR

August 16, 2011 11:54 pm at 11:54 pm #1011891mommamia22ParticipantIsn’t it “… An Indian chief”?
August 16, 2011 11:54 pm at 11:54 pm #1011892Queen BeeMemberThe first. Unless things changed from when I was a kid.
August 17, 2011 12:15 am at 12:15 am #1011893rebbi1Participantmommamia22 – you are correct it is Indian Chief. I googled it originally written in 1926 with those words.
August 17, 2011 12:35 am at 12:35 am #1011894brotherofursParticipantreally?? 😀 i never heard that one .. and i knew emergency didnt really make sense 🙂 but it makes jump rope so much more fun
August 17, 2011 12:50 am at 12:50 am #1011895brotherofursParticipanto thanks mods!
August 17, 2011 1:24 am at 1:24 am #1011896amazingirl97ParticipantIt’s a merchant, a chief or a merchant at sea, but i never heard of emergency.
August 17, 2011 3:53 am at 3:53 am #1011897kylbdnrMemberit’s a merchant a chief.
I was a counselor in a camp and the campers always sang it wrong (emergency)
August 17, 2011 5:01 am at 5:01 am #1011898estherhamalkaMemberOh my goodness! You mean to tell me it’s NOT emergency??? Wow….that’s what we grew up singing…
August 17, 2011 5:15 am at 5:15 am #1011899Bar ShattyaMemberOhhhhhh, I thought it was a lamb a sieve
August 17, 2011 7:25 am at 7:25 am #1011900HealthParticipantSee my post in -“What do you do?”
Over there I posted the original rhyme, which is none of the above!
August 17, 2011 7:40 am at 7:40 am #1011901HealthParticipantFrom a literary blog:
“Rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief;
Doctor, lawyer, merchant, chief.
A variant of the last was “Doctor, lawyer, Indian chief.”
August 17, 2011 2:17 pm at 2:17 pm #1011902bptParticipantIts “emergency”. So says the kid’s in my bungalow colony assure me.
On the topic of jump rope, does anyone still use the “strawberry shortcake” song? That was THE song of choice when I was a kid (but then again, I lived on a block with goyim, so maybe I’m thinking of a different world.)
August 17, 2011 5:14 pm at 5:14 pm #1011903adorableParticipantit is not emergency but I think all the kids just sing it that way but its not right- it makes no sense (not that anything else in the world makes sense but ok) I think its a merchant a chief
August 17, 2011 6:25 pm at 6:25 pm #1011904HLMMemberhaha… i always thought it was emergency, but that doesnt make any sense!
August 17, 2011 8:32 pm at 8:32 pm #1011905amazingirl97ParticipantIt’s not emergency its a merchant a chief i dont know where emergency came from
August 17, 2011 10:10 pm at 10:10 pm #1011907bptParticipantAmazing.. you probably haven’t jumped rope in 5 years, Miss HS bound, soon-to-be Sem bound, only have time to study and get A++ on all subjects.
If the kids in my colony say its emergency, you can take that to the bank!
And does not anyone know (or care to comment on) the strawberry shortcake song? Or are you all that young, that you think its just a stationary charachter? (or that old, that you think its something you eat)
Oomis, where are you when I need your help?
Wolf? What about you? Surely you know what I’m talking about?
August 17, 2011 11:01 pm at 11:01 pm #1011908taking a breakMemberok ok i’m really that old 🙂 “strawberry short cake, cream on top tell me the name of your sweet heart….” that the song you’re referring to?
August 18, 2011 2:00 am at 2:00 am #1011909brotherofursParticipantnever heard of the strawberry shortcake song but what about “Lemon on lime gotta be on time when the school bell rings at..”
Anyone now that one?? thats what i used to sing a lot

April 17, 2014 11:17 pm at 11:17 pm #1011912Gryffindorable GirlMemberVery random bump, but I didn’t want to start a new topic if we had one already…
Ok so who made up the jump rope song “JJ chalav Yisrael”- it couldn’t have just randomly appeared out of the blue… Someone must have started it!! I’m a 90s kid and that was THE jump rope chant- and everyone knew it, camp, shul, school- it was everywhere. So ‘fess up. Who started it?
April 18, 2014 3:02 am at 3:02 am #1011913👑RebYidd23ParticipantIt’s not a song. It’s a rhyme in which a girl counts seeds to find out who she’ll marry.
