Any other southern posters out there in coffeeland? Baltimore does NOT count!(no offense to any Baltimorians)
June 6, 2011 3:05 am at 3:05 am #775969popa_bar_abbaParticipantBaltimore is too the south!
Avenge the patriotic gore,
that flecked the streets of Baltimore,
and be the battle queen of yore,
Maryland! My Maryland!
That is from the battle song of the Confederacy, and is still the Maryland state song. It is sung to the tune of “Oh Tannenbaum”, which you might know as “Oh xmas tree”.

June 6, 2011 3:37 am at 3:37 am #775972cherrybimParticipant“Baltimore is too the south!”
A Balimorean may be a Southerner to another Balimorean, but to a Southerner, a Balimorean is no Southerner.
Hey, the Saath is gonna rahz agin!
June 6, 2011 4:21 am at 4:21 am #775973BSDMemberSorry bud, am from Brooklyn. But I got some southern humor for you:
Said the southerner to his wife:”Your hand reminds me of lemon mi-rang pie” “Oh” said his wife”and why is that?” “Because,” he says, “it has ma rang on yar finger”
June 6, 2011 4:45 am at 4:45 am #775974Josh31ParticipantHi y’all
June 6, 2011 4:53 am at 4:53 am #775975HealthParticipantcherrybim –
A Ballimorean is more south than all those Miami Snowbirds, even the ones that roost there all year!
June 6, 2011 12:29 pm at 12:29 pm #775976minyan galMemberAh do believe that a location can only be considered southern if most local restaurants and lounges serve mint juleps – with freshly grown mint – all year round. Ah personally don’t care for them, but they seem to be the quintessental southern drink. Ah would much prefer a small glessele Manischewitz sweet concord wine. This message is brought to you from the Canadian northland.
(but after having visited Atlanta and New Orleans, twice each, ah think ah know a bit about the topic. Shalom y’all.)
June 6, 2011 12:39 pm at 12:39 pm #775977gavra_at_workParticipantPBA:
Baltimore had no interest in joining the states that were resisting federal dominance in the War of Northern Agression.
Not Southern.
June 6, 2011 12:52 pm at 12:52 pm #775978cherrybimParticipantYou’ve got to admit, the funniest thing is to hear a Southerner make the beerchas Hatorah in their special drawl.
I have spent much time in the real South, being married to a Southerner…loads of fun.
June 6, 2011 1:14 pm at 1:14 pm #775979gefenParticipantcherrybim – my father’s cousins live in virginia. my mother always found it cute the way they spoke yiddish with a southern drawl.
June 6, 2011 1:30 pm at 1:30 pm #775980zahavasdadParticipantIn Florida South is North and North is South
South Florida they talk with a Northern accent and North Florida they talk with a Southern accent
June 6, 2011 1:50 pm at 1:50 pm #775981Sender AvMemberA real southern funny: the tune to misha nichnas adar is the same as pick a bail of cotton
June 6, 2011 2:26 pm at 2:26 pm #775982HealthParticipantSender – An old Square dance song. Here are the words:
“Hey little Johhny -Whatcha doin’ in the market? Not buying, not sellin, just makin trouble.
Oh whoa, pick a bail of cotton.
Oh whoa, pick a bail of hay.
June 6, 2011 7:37 pm at 7:37 pm #775983cherrybimParticipantgefen – what part of virginia those yehoodim all from?
June 6, 2011 8:17 pm at 8:17 pm #775984blinkyParticipantWell if going to the catskills is considered “upstate” then we brooklyners are considered southerners no?
June 6, 2011 8:25 pm at 8:25 pm #775985wanderingchanaParticipantBlinky: Brooklyn is north of the Mason-Dixon line.
Zahavasdad: Except in Miami (Spanish accent)
June 6, 2011 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #775986gefenParticipantcherrybim – they’re from newport news. know anyone there?
June 7, 2011 2:29 am at 2:29 am #775987cherrybimParticipantMy wife; so that makes us mechutanim.
June 7, 2011 5:19 am at 5:19 am #775988gefenParticipantcherrybim- hey y’all “mechutin” — that would be funny if ur wife knows or is related to my relatives. but i guess since we are all anonymous here (well, mostly) we might never find out.
June 7, 2011 2:12 pm at 2:12 pm #775989cherrybimParticipantNewport News was blessed with fantastic Rabbonim in the 50’s and 60’s who were m’kariv the community over a span of years. For the most part, the men, while belonging to the Orthodox shul, were not Shomer Shabbos in terms of parnossa. Many had business in real estate and retail establishments. This was the situation in many Southern towns.
The eventual success of these Rabbonim, however, was the demise of the future frum community of Newport News. The Rabbonim (Rabbi Efrayim Kolatch, Rabbi Nachman Bulman, Rabbi Allan Mirvis, Rabbi Herschel Horowitz) had worked hard to start NCSY and a day school (Henrietta Kurzer Hebrew Academy) and most of the day school graduates stayed frum and ended up going to out of town yeshivas, i.e., Baltimore: Bais Yaakov, TA, Ner Israel; New York: Stern College, YU. But they married and didn’t return; so end of Newport News frum community and end of day school. The Rabbonim had a vision and now these kids are located all over America and Eretz Yisroel and are involved in Kollel; Chinuch; Kashrus; Rabbonis; and other worthy endeavors. They have created frum families and now have children and grandchildren who continue to grow. And all because of the mesiras nefesh of a few individuals and a community of very special women who wanted more out of Yiddishkeit for their children and themselves.
Every Jew in Newport News knew each other; and for that matter, the frum youngsters knew every other frum kid in Richmond, Norfolk, and Danville; all through NYCY.
June 7, 2011 4:40 pm at 4:40 pm #775990Sister BearMemberIt was so disappointing, when I went to Texas (I think that’s South, no?) there was not one person who spoke with a Southern accent. They all talked like northerners, however they talk lol
June 7, 2011 6:29 pm at 6:29 pm #775991Sender AvMemberTexas is not “THE SOUTH”
June 7, 2011 8:27 pm at 8:27 pm #775992gefenParticipantcherrybim- wow – thanks for all that info. really really interesting! as far as where our relatives went to school, i don’t know. next time i speak with them i can ask. (we only speak maybe once or twice a year) when we lived in ny, we would see them more often cuz most of the fam lived there and they used to come in to visit everyone. now we’re more spread apart and the older generation is unfortunately dying out so…… that’s how it goes. they did come to the midwest for our son’s bar mitzvah a few yrs ago. they’re very family oriented – like most southerners prob – and make every effort to go to simchas.
have a good Yom Tov!
June 7, 2011 10:05 pm at 10:05 pm #775993Sister BearMemberlol sorry Sender Av, so what is considered “THE SOUTH”
June 7, 2011 11:33 pm at 11:33 pm #775994Josh31ParticipantAccording to all major Torah and political (lehavdil) “deios” (opinions) Texas is!!!
It is full of northerners who came here for a JOB, including me.
In the northern cities Unions are powerful, but the next generation ends up whistling Dixie as they can’t get any decent jobs up north.
June 7, 2011 11:48 pm at 11:48 pm #775995cherrybimParticipantAnd a good Yam Tov to y’all.
