Hey everyone,
I’m writing a book and I gotta do some research. What are the top seminaries all girls apply to and dream of getting into?
Thanks. Sorry, I’m clueless about such stuff.
February 9, 2012 4:06 pm at 4:06 pm #850688sem graduateMemberI don’t know about the non-BY types but…
BJJ – smart, academic… very difficult to get into, around for many years
Mesores Rochel – smart, academic, very difficult to get into – around for about 7 years
Hadar – not too hard to get into anymore, used to be harder to get accepted, very yeshivish, considered high on the list
These days – Nachlas had over 1,500 applicants – its for fun loving by girls – decent amount of schoolwork, chilled atmosphere, real by type girls – only like 5 years old…
February 9, 2012 4:10 pm at 4:10 pm #850689pascha bchochmaParticipantDon’t write a book about something you know nothing about.
No offense.
February 9, 2012 4:37 pm at 4:37 pm #850690Queen BeeMemberThanks, real israeli
pascha bchochma, I appreciate it, but believe me when I tell you that I’m not writing a book about seminary. Now what I am writing about is a topic I know a lot about. So why write about something I don’t know about? In my perfect world, seminary would not exist, but seeing that I want to write an authentic novel, I gotta deal with reality. So I appreciate any help. And just so you know, many writers write about topics they know nothing about. That’s what research is for. Not every mystery writer knows police protocol. Research.
Thanks.
February 9, 2012 5:37 pm at 5:37 pm #850691pascha bchochmaParticipantOk, thanks for clarifying. What is your background and what do you want to know about seminaries? Do you already know about the application process, the reasons girls go to seminary, parents’ attitudes? If you give me some idea what you’re looking for I’ll be happy to explain.
February 9, 2012 6:39 pm at 6:39 pm #850692popa_bar_abbaParticipantBoys to go yeshiva, to get more knowledge,
girls go to seminary, to get more stupider.
(Hmm, doesn’t have the same ring. Maybe the poetry thread people can help us out?)
February 9, 2012 6:44 pm at 6:44 pm #850693Bar ShattyaMemberi can help
seminary is bad
it makes you dumb
madrasas are bad
they make you muslom
February 9, 2012 6:51 pm at 6:51 pm #850694Queen BeeMemberpascha bchochma, thanks for offering to help =). I don’t need anything too detailed. Basically, classmates of my main character want to know which seminaries she’s applying to. They assume she’s going to get into a top one. My main character doesn’t care though. So think of it like your friends gushing over seminary when you don’t care at all. Also my main character’s friends would be gushing about where they’re applying to too.
Thanks so much!
February 9, 2012 6:59 pm at 6:59 pm #850695sem graduateMemberwhat type of character is your main character? modern, yeshivish…
it sounds like bjj is your best bet – it’s the only one pretty much all crowds know about….
February 9, 2012 7:14 pm at 7:14 pm #850696Queen BeeMemberPopa get out of my thread! lol
See this is why I don’t like this whole seminary thing, but my character is in 12th grade. Grr. Okay no labels. She’s just a frum girl, average student, great at chumash and she’s going through a difficult time (can’t say what bec it’ll spoil everything). I was thinking of putting BJJ but I wanted some more I guess. Wish seminary didn’t have to exist!
Thanks!
February 9, 2012 7:18 pm at 7:18 pm #850697popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhy don’t you make it take place in the future, when there is intergalactic travel, and seminaries don’t exist anymore?
February 9, 2012 7:24 pm at 7:24 pm #850698Queen BeeMemberLol, popa. That could be a good idea for another novel, but this one has to take place nowadays. But I like that idea. Really up my alley with the sci-fi!
You are welcome to my thread now
February 9, 2012 7:48 pm at 7:48 pm #850699sem graduateMemberwhere is the girl from? brooklyn or outa town?

February 9, 2012 8:18 pm at 8:18 pm #850701Queen BeeMemberShe’s from Brooklyn. Thanks for your help. I didn’t think this would be so complicated lol.
Thanks, Ananas12
February 9, 2012 9:07 pm at 9:07 pm #850702sem graduateMemberYou can stick to BJJ, Mesores Rochel, Nachlas, and if you want her to be yeshivish Hadar
February 9, 2012 10:29 pm at 10:29 pm #8507031st timerParticipantOr a drop less yeshivish, Bnos Chava or MeOhr

February 9, 2012 11:19 pm at 11:19 pm #850706Queen BeeMemberThanks for everyone’s help. And lol happym19, it technically isn’t a seminary question. It’s a research question.

February 10, 2012 12:23 am at 12:23 am #850708ED IT ORParticipantOr you can be original and make one up!
how about bnos chaya hogwads? (or something like that)
February 10, 2012 12:46 am at 12:46 am #850709HealthParticipantQueen Bee -“In my perfect world, seminary would not exist,”
Now this statement I find objectionable. If you wrote, in my perfect world only girls wanting to become teachers went to seminary, not e/o – this I wouldn’t have a problem with.
But not the way you wrote it.
Do you have a problem with guys going to Yeshiva too?
February 10, 2012 5:46 am at 5:46 am #850710Queen BeeMemberHealth, you know exactly what I was referring to. You just want to start up with me, don’t you? Please leave my thread.
February 10, 2012 4:48 pm at 4:48 pm #850711HealthParticipantQueen Bee -“Health, you know exactly what I was referring to.”
I actually don’t. Feel free to explain why you don’t believe any Jewish girl should go to seminary. After all this is Your thread.
February 10, 2012 5:26 pm at 5:26 pm #850712Queen BeeMemberThank you.
February 10, 2012 5:29 pm at 5:29 pm #850713popa_bar_abbaParticipant“In my perfect world, seminary would not exist.”
See, now that is a good question: In a perfect world, do women exist?
Hashem made odom, and then said “lo tov heyos haodom levado” and so created chava. So did something change in between? Because if nothing changed, then why didn’t Hashem also make chava to begin with?
I don’t know the answer to that. My best guess is that Hashem knew all along, but there is some reason that chava had to be created from odom.
February 10, 2012 6:07 pm at 6:07 pm #850714OneOfManyParticipantQB, do you mind if I ask why you think seminary shouldn’t exist? I promise to to argue with you about it – I just want to know.
February 11, 2012 7:16 pm at 7:16 pm #850715QB, you really are better off using a made-up name for the seminary, especially if your character goes there and anything important to the plot of your novel will happen there.
If you want her to apply to a few sems and then have her go to your fake, you can do that – use a handful of real names from the ones people suggest above and list your made-up name among them.
For made up names, you can either use something like Bnos Sara (which is good b/c it looks like the reference is to Sara Schenirer AH) or Bnos Torah, or Ateres Bas Torah etc. Just do NOT steal any names of Creedmoor sems, like Bnos Burqa, or my trademarked “120-denier seminary” line!

February 12, 2012 2:10 am at 2:10 am #850716OneOfManyParticipantBnos Sarah is actually a real sem.
February 12, 2012 3:18 am at 3:18 am #850717Queen BeeMemberWun Uv Meny, I don’t mind having a discussion with you, but the CR is not exactly an environment where a member, who has a very different opinion than the norm, is welcome. I’m sorry.
February 12, 2012 4:31 am at 4:31 am #850718🙂 What would I know? The sems I know about are Bnos Burqa, Machon Cholere, Bnos Kanois (daytime) and Merkaz lePritzus (night sem).
February 12, 2012 5:04 am at 5:04 am #850719zeena.kastaMemberhaha…so funny. really this is serious!!!
February 12, 2012 7:19 pm at 7:19 pm #850720OneOfManyParticipantSo zeena…did your daughter decide where to go yet? 🙂
February 12, 2012 11:10 pm at 11:10 pm #850721Copying a couple from a list:
Darchei Bina
Afikei Torah
Be’er Myriam
Midreshes Tehilla
Machon Raaya
Ateres Bnos Yerushalayim
Peninim
Seminar Y-m
I have no idea who these appeal to or what their perceived qualities may be. My Pell Grant seminaries change names as soon as the bank transfers hit my Panamanian and Belize accounts :).
