about 2 yrs ago,i stopped reading secular books. as a massive reader who cudnt find anything in the PUBLIC library to read anymore (that’s how much i read)this was a huge thing for me. besides the fact that there are very, very few well written books who you cannot guess the story without opening it, there are so few books in general.by now i have painfully swallowed ALL the Jewish books and i am at my wits end.Does anybody know any amazing books? Any ideas how to keep myself busy?
April 10, 2011 10:45 pm at 10:45 pm #762578StuffedCabbageParticipantread the zman…..by the way-did it come out yet?? lol
April 10, 2011 10:51 pm at 10:51 pm #762579candy613Memberi also dont read secular books so much anymore. I was getting extremely frustrated, because I feel all these jewish novels are good, but all the same stuff. I did find some books I really liked though. Devorah Weiner has some really good ones. Changing Tides, Hearts of Gold, Hearts of Gold 2, and 2 others that are good 2! There is also another book I just got that I really like called Blueprints not exactly sure who the author is.
If you like short stories, Rabbi Dovid Kaplan’s Impact books are really good, and also Nachman Seltzer has a bunch all really good! I know how ur feeling wish ya luck!!!

April 11, 2011 3:41 pm at 3:41 pm #762583tomim tihyeMemberListen to Rabbi Kirzner’s tapes, or, better, buy the ipod with all his lectures on it. BEST investment you could possibly make!!
You’ll also develop your auditory skills.

What kinda books are you interested in?
April 11, 2011 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm #762585walton157Member@dancinggirl: There is a series of books by author Janet Evanovich called the Stephanie Plum series.
One for the Money
Two for the Dough, etc.
These books are entertaining, “kosher” and the best charachter is Grandma Mazur. Give them a try. Yom Tov is coming and these are very easy, quick reads.
The library definately has them.
Enjoy!!!
April 11, 2011 4:59 pm at 4:59 pm #762586April 11, 2011 5:40 pm at 5:40 pm #762587s2021MemberIv been through the same thing.I used to be an AVID reader. While a good jewish novel is almost impossible to come by, I shifted my desire for reading novels to books/seforim which I actually learn and gain from. Those kind of “jewish books” are amazing and everywhere. I also try to spend more time with shiurim, and fill my time with ACTIONS. As incredibly hard as it is to wean urself off of books, Soon u will start seeing how much fuller ur life is. Lots of luck to all of us readers.. Hashm is proud of our efforts!!
April 12, 2011 3:19 am at 3:19 am #762588BwashereMemberI read secular books, and I would read Jewish ones but I have the same problem.
I read a really good book though- its not a novel- but its called The Thinking Jewish Teenagers Guide to Life…
April 12, 2011 4:28 am at 4:28 am #762589HIEParticipantIt’s true there is a massive shortage of jewish mystery-thriller-action novels.
Chaim Greenbaum, auther of the acclaimed novel “The Will” just came out with another. It’s published by Shar Press.
April 12, 2011 4:45 am at 4:45 am #762590WolfishMusingsParticipantI don’t suppose you’d be interested in non-fiction suggestions?
The Wolf
April 12, 2011 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm #762591ursula momishMember<Any ideas how to keep myself busy?>
Having read so much, why not try writing something yourself? Don’t try for a polished product at first, just try to entertain yourself (and others?) and if it seems promising, you can tighten it up later.
Hatzlacha!
April 12, 2011 1:33 pm at 1:33 pm #762592Raphael KaufmanMemberWhat is the difference between a “Jewish” mystery-thriller and a “Secular” mystery thriller? P.S. If you want a very interesting mystery-thriller, try “Murder in the Miqdash” (don’t remember the author but it is available on Amazon). It’s a murder mystery set in the Yerushalayim in the Messianic era. The details are mostly RAMBAM’s shitah.
April 12, 2011 3:25 pm at 3:25 pm #762593adorableParticipantwhat about reading the new magazine that they just putting out called eclipse. I hear its supposed to be interesting
April 12, 2011 5:16 pm at 5:16 pm #762594chocandpatienceMemberI go with s2021 and Wolf – perhaps look into non-fiction options.
When I was younger, I spent most of my free time reading. Now (with almost no time to read) I regret not using at least part of that time for non-fiction reading.
April 17, 2011 9:35 pm at 9:35 pm #762595dancinggirlMemberi really like action thrillers. the will was amazing and so was the network. i have been saving the mexico file for pesach(Soooo excited!FINALLY something to read!) i like anything well written, though. since i ran out of books, i went historical like marcus lemans, avner gold, legacy of gold crocadile island…i find the older books are sooo well written, but i read them all by now…

April 18, 2011 2:08 am at 2:08 am #762598brotherofursParticipantthis is why i’m scared to switch to only reading non secular books. I Love reading but can’t seem to find any good novels either, maybe i’ll try these. 🙂 when i do read non secular books i end up reading nonfiction srories
April 18, 2011 2:10 am at 2:10 am #762599brotherofursParticipant*i remember i did love Behind the Walls.
April 18, 2011 5:25 pm at 5:25 pm #762600zahavasdadParticipantI read non-fiction (especially History and Biography)
I am no writer and my writing skills are poor, but I can tell you the jewish books are terrible.
There are rules to writing English. Grammar , paragraph delopement, Story development etc . You might not like the rules when you are writing, but when you are reading a book, its important for these rules to be followed or else the book becomes unreadable.
It seems these jewish books dont follow those rules.
The Jewish book companies need to hire more proofreaders and copy editors to make sure these rules are kept

May 1, 2011 2:01 am at 2:01 am #762613eclipseMemberadorable,thanks!I just saw your post!
As I mentioned on another thread,I researched the magazine idea;impossible without adequate funding.
Ever read “The Very Best Me” published in 1992/3?
I wasn’t happy with the editing(they put IN grammar errors!)but that was one of my first little projects.
