    Don’t mean to be a ‘party-pooper’ but…

    Just a little reminder…

More than 1,500 people DIED on the Titanic.

Is it really an appropriate subject for jokes?

yes. tragedy + time = comedy and its been long enough. and before you pull a godwin…yes even the occasional world war 2 joke is appropriate depending on the joke

soliek: Is joking about the Churban or Pograms also okay, given the passage of time?

Soliek that is a really ignorant thing to say. If Alex’s ( making up a name)mother and father die in a car crash, is it ok a certain number of years later to laugh about it and say hey, hey, hey its been long enough kid time to get over it. No. Have a little class.

generic WWII jokes actually…i said it depended on the type of joke. the joke i posted in the OP is so generic that it can hardly be offensive

for example…some people get offended at hitler jokes. personally i find them hilarious. would you be offended by a haman joke? no.

    #857809

The pun in the original post is clearly not meant to offend or minimize the tragedy of 1,500 lost lives.

The “Titanic” disaster has entered the mainstream dialog in many ways – in 2007 people were referring to the New York Mets’ collapse as the “Met-tanic Disaster”, and “hitting the iceberg” or “not seeing the iceberg” are also expressions I’ve heard used.

Along the same lines, I’ve also seen a concession stand named “Custard’s Last Stand”, a soft drink called “Alexander the Grape”, and an arcade (or the like – I don’t remember exactly) called “Attila the Fun”.

It’s commendable to be sensitive, but in this case I don’t see the OP as objectionable.

    P.S.

Full disclosure – I can be considered equally guilty of the same offense in this post: http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/inspiring-quotes#post-12372

Being that the 100th anniversary is coming up in April -(coinciding with the re-release of the film) I would think Titanic jokes are not thaaaaat appropriate. IMHO- a joke about a subject that caused someone pain is never appropriate…

mosquitos cause me pain, have you ever told a joke about mosquitos?

    #857812

    soliek:

Good One! I’m referring to emotional/mental pain. & if mosquitos cause you emotional anguish then no, what would I have to gain by belittling your pain?
