The original started out talking about knitting/crocheting, so I didn’t bother reading through it. Here’s the real deal.
When I was in the dorm in yeshiva, we used to BBQ by taking a 9×13 aluminum pan, an air conditioning grill (toveled and sterilized, of course!), and a bag of charcoal. We’d go the local store and buy beer with our fake ID’s.

Building a smoker out of car parts… THATS the real deal.
There is a restaurant called the Iron Barley where the chef created his own smoker, you can watch it on YouTube, it was featured on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network.

We used to grill hot dogs in the dorm by wrapping them in silver foil & then pressing a hot iron on it. This worked for grill cheese as well, just needed a seperate iron for milchigs & fleishigs.
Mod-80 do you remember another thread I made about husbands and over-nourishing wives? I guess I should have taken your words to heart.
I used a travel iron in a hotel once. I had catered double-wrapped meals that I could have taken to the (traif) kitchen. But I did not have the patience nor the faith that they would not unwrap it, so I warmed it up myself.

ikwdfellow- We had a toaster and microwave so there was no need for the iron. Did you guys ever use the dryer for that type of stuff?

onegoal – indeed we had toasters & microwaves, much to the Hanhola’s dismay. We had hotplates & crockpots as well. But, since all of these things were ossur to have, as per fire department rules, they were always being confiscated. I think guys actually put a can of baked beans in the dryer once, but I forgot if it exploded. But like the magicians say – don’t try this at home…

Feif Un – our R”Y also was strongly against us making cholent in the dorm. He said that besides the fact the dorm smelled a whole week from cholent, he was also afraid that the Yeshiva was going to get the name as the “cholent making Yeshiva”……..
My RY was total for having cholent in the dorms on friday night, there is nothing wrong with it!
We made one Thursday night…

Yochie- This is aside from the learning.
Yochie – indeed we learnt in Yeshiva. The extra-curricular stuff – like cooking cholents, etc. – was done late at night when returned to the dorm.

“When” is the key word, Feif. In my days, we did all sorts of things like this too.
Today’s crowd? They order in from Esti Hanna and Jerusalem Steakhouse (or whatever the EY equivalent is). Highly doubtful the majority is cooking).
I see. The main thing is learning, but all they talk about is..

We sure did buy from restaurants, but we also cooked alot of stuff in the dira, when we were running short on money or were’nt lazy to cook
Maybe you’re part of the sandwich generation, so you’re remembering actually doing something, when you had a free moment (or lapse in judgment).
From what I hear, the boys live like royalty (ok, the royal stable is probably closer to the truth).
Funny thing is, I’m told that sem girls are expected to help the hostess, bring a gift, entertain the kids, ect.
Try getting that from a boy doin’ his 12 in EY.

the custom of cholent on friday nights in yeshiva is of ancient vintage !! many,many years ago (will not disclose how many)in jerushalaim, every yeshiva-especially chevron- had a cholent very specifically cooked for friday night….

Not sure where this was coming from Shimmel, but here what I meant.
People who enjoy cooking are usually married because:
Women – they love to patchkeh, the more complicated the reciepe, the better.
Men – its so much safer to just cook the way you like it, rather than navagate the minefield you’ll surely be walking into if you try to suggest a change.
Which is not to say, men can’t cook real good food, but its not a passion, its a means to an end
Singles (boys in particular), on the other hand, just eat what can be made in as short a time possible (or they’re eating by someone else).
Hence the guess that 1Day is married. There are always exceptions, and I guess 1Day is one of them.
I know a R”Y that not only permits Friday night cholent but on occassion joins his talmidim. Different strokes for different folks.
I know a decent number of guys, married and single, who enjoy cooking
