My view is that if this song was good enough for the Chofetz Chaim ZTL, it is good enough for me. I don’t mix in.

huh?
December 9, 2010 10:27 pm at 10:27 pm #834853yechezkel89Membersmile, there is absolutely nothing wrong about the video. if you are so concerned about what the maccabeas might think then don’t be on this site.
December 9, 2010 10:51 pm at 10:51 pm #834854Sister BearMemberA friend of mine’s something or other is friends with one of the maccabeats and they said that they got a ton of calls from people who were lighting candles and wanted to know more about Chanukah and their heritage.
As for the people who say well it’s good for public school people but not us. Well the song they took it from is a totally appropriate song (that’s what my friend said anyway.)and it’s better than some other famous singers who’s tunes come from bad songs.
December 10, 2010 2:08 am at 2:08 am #834855mischiefmakerMemberby girl my skewl has the same thing. nobody stops…a whole day. BTW, anyone saw the video of the proposal with the maccabeats? I just think its waaaaaaacky!!!!

December 10, 2010 4:43 am at 4:43 am #834859smile66Memberyechezkel89 – don’t you care what the maccabees might think?
December 10, 2010 8:38 am at 8:38 am #834860kapustaParticipantsmile:
I hear where you’re coming from. I’m wondering why you don’t consider it Kosher though. If the Maccabbes would listen to most of todays music, they probably wouldn’t be happy. Is this the only song you would say that about, or would that go for much of the current music?
My (limited) understanding of music is that if a song brings someone closer to Hashem, that is the ultimate. If someone lit Menorah over Chanukah because of it, would that not bring Kedushah to the song?
I apologize if this came off as an “attack”, it was completely not intended as such.
December 10, 2010 1:16 pm at 1:16 pm #834861Pashuteh YidMemberThe song is funny. The gemara says in Taanis that Eliyahu Hanavi pointed out two people who were bnei olam haba. An Amora asked them what do you people do? They said we are comedians, and we cheer up depressed people. So bringing simcha into the world is a very high madreiga.
There is nothing wrong with the song.
I am a poet and I didn’t know it.
December 10, 2010 1:37 pm at 1:37 pm #834862A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantSaw the video the other night, my sons showed it to me. They knew it was a parody of a goyish song, I didn’t – and still haven’t got a clue about the original song. But this is quite cute and well done! To all the above posters who think this is “harmful”, get a life. Do you really think someone will see this and think it’s not a good representation of some pleasant, clean cut young men having a good time? If you do, get a life! Besides which, the aforementioned People’s Court video is a much more negative view, and surely problematic.
I remember showing the Lecha video that was out a few years ago to some non-Jewish coworkers, and they loved the dancing!
December 12, 2010 7:25 pm at 7:25 pm #834863sof davar hakol nishmaMemberi don’t know about a kiddush Hashem or not. i just thought it was really funny and very very professionally done. it was without music, everything was EXACTLY on beat and on key, they had good voices, the harmonies were excellent…i’m not educated with the goyish songs so i had no clue it was originally a goyish tune, however the first thought taht hit me was, “gosh this is really goyish sounding”
btw, i don’t know much about YU and im soooo confused about them. does anyone here know what they’re all about?
and that proposal…ummm lets just say a really embarrassing LONG one!
December 13, 2010 11:22 pm at 11:22 pm #834864mischiefmakerMemberby girl sorry i didnt reply for a long time but nope i dont live in ny so its not your school but i pretty much think everyone has heard about them.
December 14, 2010 12:49 am at 12:49 am #834866memoMemberamazingly done… very professional…the bad part is it’s from a goyish song-but they did a great job..i think it could be a kiddush Hashem since they basically got tons of pple going around learning about Chanukah..it’s great!…making the Yiddishkeit exciting… as far as the non-Jewish tune–i think we shouldn’t use goyish songs bc it’s confusing to us who are we where are our priorites…Jewish or Jewish cultured Americans????????????its a question we have to ask ourselves!!
December 14, 2010 6:32 pm at 6:32 pm #834868Pashuteh YidMemberThe bottom line is that they brought a lot of simcha this year to many. Every kid in every school was singing it 24/7. Some of the comments said things like, I haven’t lit candles in over 20 years, but I did this year.
As far as using something non-Jewish, Henry Ford was not exactly Jewish, or a great friend of the Jews. If one drove a Ford to a shiur, does that make the shiur less pure and holy?
December 14, 2010 10:04 pm at 10:04 pm #834869A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantOr if someone listened to MBD singing “Yidden”. How many times does it have to be mentioned, that like Yiddish, Jewish Music is frequently a patchwork of music from wherever we happen to be in golus. Which is why klezmar sounds different then Yemeni.
December 14, 2010 10:05 pm at 10:05 pm #834870A Woman Outside BrooklynParticipantIn the “modern” music world, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach zt”l was truly original, sang for Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l, yet so many mocked him during his lifetime.

No.
You are just trolling. If you really cared, you would not be online.

If someone is so Makpid not to see women, then they should expect to see them online, even on frum sites. Not seeing any women is should not be an expectation.
December 8, 2011 4:20 pm at 4:20 pm #834878Sam2ParticipantBekitzur: They asked Shailas about it and were told it was okay. I believe they ran everything by Rav Willig, but I could be mistaken about who they asked. The reason for it was that they had received many complaints from a lot of random groups for not having women in there (one publication called them “Ultra-orthodox chauvinistic pigs”, if I recall correctly), so they felt it might be a Chillul Hashem to keep women out again. They did ask Shailas before they did it though. I wouldn’t expect that many women in a future video though. This one was mostly just because of the extenuating circumstances.
December 8, 2011 11:52 pm at 11:52 pm #834879sam4321ParticipantSam2: I wonder if the Rosh Yeshiva knew he was being filmed.
December 9, 2011 12:11 am at 12:11 am #834880Sam2ParticipantSam4: Sure, Rav Schachter knew. They told him beforehand and he even knew that at a certain point the Macabbeat in the video would ask a question.

December 13, 2011 2:43 am at 2:43 am #834885moishyParticipantkapusta-yes there is a new one out, in my opinion this one is a great song but much more goyish-sounding than the other ones.

December 13, 2011 6:48 am at 6:48 am #834887amichaiParticipantgreat new song for chanukah! love their music!
December 13, 2011 4:11 pm at 4:11 pm #834889yichusdikParticipantMoishy, Ironic it sounds more goyish – this year they did a cover of “Miracle” davka about chanukah, word for word, no need to change the lyrics, that was put out by Matisyahu (who may not be your flavour of frum, but davening, tzitzis wearing, shomer shabbos and kashrus, full of ahavas yisroel frum) last year. It is actually the most Jewish song they covered yet.
December 13, 2011 4:37 pm at 4:37 pm #834890zahavasdadParticipantThe new one is a cover of a Matisyahu song
December 13, 2011 6:41 pm at 6:41 pm #834891DuggieMemberteehee, I LOVE it!!! Book of good life was my favorite song and video so far, but still this chanukah one is great. I think that personally it does more good than harm. I agree with all these posters from last year that it is a really nice portayol of Jews. I agree totally that yidden are getting such bad attention with either being “ultra-orthodox” (whatever that means) or as scheming swindlers rachmana litzlan! hopefully the world can see finally that we are “normal” (still, we are the am segulah) people, who happen to have some members that unfortunately misrepresent us (I’m not saying that ultra orthodox misrepresent us, but in the news they are not portrayed in the kindest light), and have good, wholesome, nice young guys who can sing beautifully and make awesome videos.
you don’t have to agree with me, because I already am anticipating some comments already- but let’s all hope that for everyones sake they continue making more fun and kosher entertainment!!!
– while we’re at it- come on maccabeats- give us an original song finally!!!
December 13, 2011 7:06 pm at 7:06 pm #834892zahavasdadParticipantOT Kinda sad on Matisyahu
