who’s seen the video? What do you think?
December 7, 2010 4:06 pm at 4:06 pm #834798aries2756ParticipantI think it is cute, upbeat and fun. There is nothing wrong with it. And for those who say it is a goyish tune. Think about MBD who’s song Yiddin everyone still sings and hums. That was a German march! So everyone from Country Yossi to MBD, has taken Goyish tunes and turned them into Yiddish hits!
It is a group of Yeshiva boys singing a Chanuka song. They are all dressed like OREOS, with their white shirts and black pants, there are no girls in the video, there is nothing non-kosher in the video, and it is even accapela so there is no musical instruments involved. Anyone can listen to it at any time. It is an informative song about Chanuka and it is fun to watch and fun to listen to. I don’t see any downside to it.
It is probably a good beat to walk to and exercise to. If you like this kind of music, go for it.
December 7, 2010 4:08 pm at 4:08 pm #834799The Rabbi RocksMemberI thought it was hysterical
December 7, 2010 4:12 pm at 4:12 pm #834800ramateshkolianMembermy problem with it is that it’s been on CNN and other news outlets. THIS is what secular Jews see of us frum jews and the goyim too. It’s just a representation of our shallow, superficial generation. But I guess you have to do what works for the times!
December 7, 2010 4:33 pm at 4:33 pm #834802Jack DanielsMemberi loved it,my family has been playing it non-stop!!!
December 7, 2010 4:36 pm at 4:36 pm #834803Brooklyn YentaParticipantramateshkolian: most people aren’t stupid enough to think that this video defines jews. if anything, it shows that we have a sense of humor, and talent, to boot. guys, lighten up! the video is adorable!

Um, so?
Actually, I think non-Jews think of Jews as swindlers and cheaters, and thats on a good day.

December 7, 2010 5:51 pm at 5:51 pm #834809Pashuteh YidMemberWhile I go more for Carlebach style music, I did get quite a chuckle out of this. I believe it is a kiddush hashem for the following reason. These days religion is either considered to be nerdy or else fanatical, like the Islamic terrorists. This video shows kids it can be normal and cool. Imagine a child out in the midwest who knows little about Judaism and is embarrassed to do anything Jewish for fear his friends may find out. A video like this will blow his mind. There is nothing to be embarrassed about, and he can even be proud of his heritage. These guys are all normal, with-it, funny guys, who go to college like everyone else, and yet are clean-cut and sincere, and love their religion. It makes a very big roshem on a Jewish public school kid anywhere in the world. I would not be surprised if quite a few kids become frum because of this, down the road. Yiddishkeit can be cool.

December 7, 2010 6:15 pm at 6:15 pm #834811✡onegoal™ParticipantSomeone showed it to me and I have been watching it ever since. It is funny and well done. As for the goyish tune part whats so bad about the tune it’s the words that are the problem probably in this case because the tune is fine.
December 7, 2010 6:19 pm at 6:19 pm #834812ImaofthreeParticipantMaccabeats Chanukah song will hopefully compensate for Judge Judy’s clip “frum couple verses Dry Cleaners”, in which a terrible chillul Hashem was made. Dry Cleaner put the wig in the dry cleaning machine by mistake.
December 7, 2010 6:23 pm at 6:23 pm #834813WolfishMusingsParticipantJudge Judy’s
Minor nitpick… it was The People’s Court, not Judge Judy.
(yeah, I know… nit, nit, nit… 🙂 )

I really don’t know. In any event, this line of questioning is really better-suited for the other thread.

December 7, 2010 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #834819chofetzchaimMemberIs this what the Navi meant by “Umal’ah ha’aretz dai’ah es Hashem…”
December 7, 2010 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm #834820kapustaParticipantI agree with aries. Just because we know they took the tune from somewhere shouldn’t make it any worse than a song people assume is original but isn’t really.
Plus, with over two million hits on youtube, how many non-frum Jews decided to light Menorah, or speak to a Rabbi, or even just thought a little about being Jewish.
December 7, 2010 8:29 pm at 8:29 pm #834821so rightMemberI can see some benefit for non-frum or not so frum people watching this. But it is a detriment to ehriliche yidden to watch.
December 7, 2010 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm #834822dunnoMemberso right:
In what way is it a detriment?
December 7, 2010 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm #834823Jack DanielsMemberbesides most jewish music is based on non-jewish music so what is the difference? at least they admit were they took it from and are not passing it off as their own
December 8, 2010 1:03 am at 1:03 am #834825musictomyearsMemberThink about it this way: (use your imagination)
do you think Hashem is looking down listening and smiling at the song??do you think He’s shepping nachas from watching his children sing the song?
this will give you an answer. there is no right or wrong one, its all a matter of opinion.
this is what i think before buying any Cd i hear a preview of.
it helps differentiate between the very fine line of jewish music and not so jewish music
December 8, 2010 2:32 am at 2:32 am #834826sm29ParticipantI’m surprised that it became so popular so quickly. I’m glad that it has baruch Hashem, made a good impact on people, and help them to be happy to be Jewish
December 8, 2010 3:35 am at 3:35 am #834827strivefortruthMemberHashem most certainly is smiling down on this song. a song whose lyrics include ‘a great return to torah learning” has encaptured the hearts of thousands(millions?) of yidden around the world, yidden who need chizuk the most. what a tremendous kiddush hashem and pirsumei nissah of chanukah!
December 8, 2010 4:36 am at 4:36 am #834828mw13Participantmusictomyears: Do you think Hashem is looking down, listening to this song, and frowning? What exactly is wrong with it?
December 8, 2010 11:26 am at 11:26 am #834829ImaofthreeParticipantI think it’s alot worse when I hear psukim from the Torah or Davening put to a beaty secular tune. If the Maccabeats would have put psukim or davening to this non Jewish beaty song then I alarm bells would have gone off in my ears. But they didn’t. Wish they would put out more songs (and their shidduch resumes).
December 8, 2010 12:39 pm at 12:39 pm #834830WiseWomanMemberone word…OBSESSED!!!!!!
I happen to know one of the guys from the group as we did know each other is high school and I can tell you he had a great voice then and B”H still has one now. I started playing it for the Rosh Yeshiva in the school I work in and he says “I want to see the rest later but I gotta start my meeting.” A rosh yeshiva!!! He thought it was fun and cute. They got over 2 million hits and that is amazing! What a Kiddush Hashem they are making!
December 8, 2010 1:38 pm at 1:38 pm #834831HelpfulMemberWW – so these characters went to a coed HS?
December 8, 2010 2:29 pm at 2:29 pm #834832TheGoqParticipantshe said she knew one of them from hs not all, and so what if they did go to a coed hs? are you going to denigrate them for their upbringing or for not being as frum as you? (not that you have any idea how frum they are) and you call them characters they are talented enthusiastic young men whats wrong with that?
December 8, 2010 2:51 pm at 2:51 pm #834833dunnoMemberHelpful: Like TheGoq said, they didn’t necessarily go to a coed HS and even if they did, chill.
December 8, 2010 3:13 pm at 3:13 pm #834835tzippiMemberSince this thread hasn’t been fully hijacked yet, MikeHall, there are many women who have real jobs who know, deep down, that they get equal fulfillment, if not greater, during the time they spend at home, baking challos. And there are others who don’t. Not knocking either. But the former may be better grounded.

My grandchildren have been exposed to this goyish song on the school bus by their driver. Yup! They all knew it with the goyish words!!! Now they all B”H have the Jewish version they can sing on the bus!!

Whoa. Helpful showed no indication that he was about to “denigrate them for their upbringing or for not being as frum as you” or that he had “any idea how frum they are”. For a post blasting assumptions, you seem to have made a fair amount of them yourself.

December 9, 2010 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm #834847squeakParticipantI’m not very into music. I found out about this yesterday, at my Chanuka party (see the jokes thread), when one of the young ‘uns started singing it.
The best comment on the song came from a 3 year old who exclaimed, “That’s a goyishe song!”.
“Why is it goyish?” (the 3 year old has certainly not ever heard the original)
He replied, “Because we don’t flip latkes in the air, it’s food!”
December 9, 2010 5:02 pm at 5:02 pm #834848smile66MemberI do agree that this video can be really good for some kid in a public school out in the midwest and many others who need to hear that judaism is cool and then they might begin to discover it for themselves.
That being said, forget for a second whether or not Hashem is smiling at the song or not. This is chanuka, right? What are we celebrating on chanuka, besides the face level of the oil burning for 8 days? The real intense celebration of chanuka is of the victory of pure kedusha over anything that was touched by the goyim. The whole reason the maccabees even found that one jug of pure oil is because they searched and searched and searched; they could not entertain the thought that they would light the menorah for Hashem with something that was touched (just touched!) by the goyim. Now I understand that this video may end up helping some irreligious people, but coming to the bottom line – really what would the maccabees have thought of the song? How about the hellenists?
Remember what chanukah is actually about before you stamp your seal of approval.

I agree with you 100%.
December 9, 2010 7:32 pm at 7:32 pm #834850blueberrymuffinParticipantme three!
I’ve been reading through the posts and I see many posters seem to agree that the song is good since it may help bring public-school kids back to yiddishkeit. That may very well be true, but think about it – are we public-school kids?
