When Moshiach comes, is the Bais Hamikdosh going to have indoor plumbing? an escalator? computerized systems? signs that say, ‘turn off all cell phones?’ apps with the latest Sanhedrin rulings? a sound system for the weekdays? a microscope to discover any damage in the stones? There for sure won’t be tzedaka collectors or flyers about chinese auctions to benefit yeshivas because no one will be poor, right? I hope we see this answer really really soon!

    1) Indoor plumbing? We will have advanced pipeless plumbing like we have wireless connections.

    2) Computerized systems? Sure, right outside Yerushalaim proper. That’s where all mathematical calculations were made.

    3) Signs? We know there was one sign forbidding non-Jews to enter past a certain area. And if one mustn’t enter with a wallet-belt, certainly a cell-phone should be off limits.

Oh Shreck! – On your number 3: a money-belt was only assur to wear openly, if it was hidden then it was muttar.

The first Beis Hamikdash was built by Shlomo Hamelech (King Soloman), the wisest of men. Meaning, his intellect far surpassed the inventions of the industrial revolution, the cyber revolution, and whatever revolutions contemporary scientist can only speculate of.

Possibly, the Beit Hamikdash was replete with inventions beyond our times.

It is interesting to note the famous Ben Yehoyada in Gittin, that Shlomo Hamelech used to speed down the streets of Yerushalayim in a coal-powered car, and everyone suspected he was being carried by Sheidim.

The Midrash and Meforshim say that at the foot of King Shlomo’s thrown, there was a golden lion that would spring to life to guard the thrown from anyone other than Shlomo trying to ascend, and that birds would carry a Sefer Torah to him.

Perhaps the power of Kedusha will circumvent the need for electric in the Beis Hamikdosh.

Although, the pulley and irrigation systems in the Beis Hamikdash were not nearly as sophisticated as modern-day technology.

There are some that speculate that it is man’s purpose to live in harmony with nature, and avoid any technology that interferes with the cycle of nature- (an idea defied in today’s sedentary world).

Perhaps this ides is supported by the Jewish custom not to burry in a casket, but rather upon the earth, to encourage decomposition and land enrichment. The drainage through irrigation under the Beis Hamikdash, as well, works in harmony with this biological cycle.

As far as the manual, relatively unsophisticated, pulley-system, there were clear and open miracles that took place in the Beis Hamikdash on a daily basis. So there was definitely an intended extent of miracles and automatically-run things, and the beginning of requisite human effort in the Beis Hamikdosh.

-I am curious to hear the views of Sam2, rebdoniel, and WIY on this.

I thought this was going to be a serious topic. I guess not.

writersoul – There won’t be any handicapped people when Moshiach comes. Everyone will be healed like at Har Sinai. So why the need for wheelchair accessibility?

because no one will be poor, right?

From whence do you know this? The Rambam makes the point that nothing will change except for our subjugation by the nations. Presumably that means that there will continue to be rich and poor amongst us.

You’re wrong in this respect; the Rambam says both (very last piece in Yad)

writersoul – sorry – i hadn’t even seen your post when I posted mine. (if you look – both of ours were put up 3 hrs ago, they probably hit at the same time). So please don’t take offense at what I wrote. It’s some of the other comments that I was referring to. It just sounds to me like they are joking about a serious topic.

I would presume that we will use whatever is available that is allowed. However, nothing permanent can be added on to the Binyan, so presumable electric wiring would be Assur because of HaKol Biksav…

Pixelate: You make an assumption that Shlomo being the smartest man ever means he could outthink all of the inventors of the future combined. Many inventions involve lifetimes of work as all science builds upon previous science. Einstein couldn’t have been Einstein without Newton. So even if Shlomo Hamelech was a good deal smarter than Newton and Einstein and everyone else, who is to say that he possessed the ability to think of Newton and then build upon that and then build upon that, etc.?

I am not sure why you started your question “when mashiach comes”,

we may be zoche to be mekayem the mitzvah before moshiach?

gefen: I’m not offended- I reread it and I could see why someone might think it wasn’t serious.

It’s actually also a bit academic as I remember reading about the stairs to the Bais HaMikdash and how they were uneven so that you couldn’t run up them. So I’m just hoping there’s also a ramp :).

No reason there shouldn’t be plumbing. Heating the Mikva will be done either through microwave or infrared light, or at least not by sticking in a heated iron.

I’m sure there will be a website to pay for Kinim and to donate for the Tamid and other Shekalim. Being that the web will be cleaned up at that point it won’t be a Bezayon that the Beis Hamikdosh will have a site. No ads, though.

A big beautiful clock can stand over the Ulam.

The question is, will the Leviim use amplifiers? If yes, will they use pickups on the violin, or to preserve sound quality they won’t? What about electrical instruments? Perhaps it depends if Ikkar Shira B’Peh (if Bloomberg lets). If not, what about electronic assisted instruments (e.g. electric guitar, elec. violin, ancient elec. organs)? Also, being that there are many Karbanos at the same time we don’t want Shira cross-talk. Maybe we’ll use mutes.

Is cat gut OK for a violin in the Mikdash? Do we say Mimashke Yisroel? Does this also depend on what is Ikkar Shira?

Will the Kohanim have shwarma? Burgers?

Will we set up a Mikdash cam?

Sam2- you are correct. being smarter doesnt mean he would automatically think up every modrn convernience. i once asked my RY about Adam, Shlomo hamelech etc., who knew and understood the briyah. he explained it two ways. one was that their focus wasnt on figuring out these things; their every movement and thought was for avodas Hashem. like the midrash says that chanoch was miyached the Shem Hashem while making shoes. they simply were focused on the ruchny.

seond was more al pi kabbalah, or so he said. basically HKBH is mashpiah chochmah in to this world in doses, for whatever reasons He sees fit. the RY went through alot of history and showed how every time klal yisroel needed help from shomayim due to the poor state of their adherence or knowledge to/of judaism, Hashem helps out and sends them someone or a few gedolei torah to bring up the level overall in world jewry. when that hashpa’a hits us some of it mimeila ends up by the goyim, and the chachma gets used by them to further science etc.

The Ben Ish Chai says that Shlomo Hamelech purposely did not publicize and invent technologies because it wwould land in the wrong hands. Had the Romans had high speed boats, planes, guns, chemicals and mass weaponry, they wouldn’t have shied away from using any of it.

    #964469

Well, neither would we! Any technology that our enemies could have used against us is technology that we also could have used to defend ourselves and fight back.

The victor gets to use it. Both sides using mass destruction doesn’t kill less people. WWII didn’t see less deaths than its predecessors.
