Since there are still questions in some threads as to how formatting and ASCII art works, why not try out your various experiments in one place? Those who already know formatting techniques can share their knowledge with others.

I don’t have the time right now, but IY”H if someone else hasn’t already done so by tonight, I’ll b’n give examples of:

Allowed markup: a blockquote code em strong ul ol li.

You can also put code in between backtick ( ` ) characters.

…as well as ASCII art formatting.

Lesson 1- the basics:

Each one of these is a HTML tag that is used to notify the browser that special formatting is needed. Most tags need to be used both before and after the text you want to mark, and two only need to be used before the text.

Here are brief descriptions of each tag, and samples of how they work:

I think coke’s artwork will definitely get in to MOMA.

Moish’s artwork is too conservative. It just doesn’t pull the senses and encourage imagination.

Lesson 1a – using quotes in the anchor tab causes the link to not work properly. Let’s try it without the quote marks:

Lesson 2 – fixed font vs. proportional font:

When trying ASCII art, a fixed-width font is needed. that means each character takes up the same width. Proportional fonts are more visually appealing on a letter, but wreck picture-drawing attempts.

1) Fixed-width vs. proportional:

Notice any difference in how the “i”s and “w”s line up?

Another problem with the default appearance of posts is that multiple spaces between words is truncated to one space.

a b c becomes a b c.

How can a fixed-width font be selected, and spaces be preserved?

Prefixing a backtick before the post, and appending another backtick at the end takes care of this.

I’ve tried several times to do it on my own. TurboTax babies me with the federal part, but then I get stuck with the state return. And end up having someone else do it for me. 🙁

Maybe I’ll try again this year and will pose all questions to the esteemed CR.
