Haredi surge: 25% of Jewish students enrolled in haredi system.
Haredi school system nearly doubles in size in since 2000, overtakes national religious as second largest in Israel.
By David Rosenberg
While only about 10% of Israeli Jewish adults identify with the haredi religious stream, the haredi school system now accounts for a full 25% of all Jewish students in Israel.
Even more impressive is the rate of growth in haredi schools over the past decade and a half.
From 2000 to 2015, the total haredi school population increased by a whopping 89%, far beyond the increases seen in either of the two other Jewish school systems.
In the year 2000, roughly 17% of Jewish students were enrolled in the haredi system, as opposed to just under 19% in the national religious system and 64% in the secular state school system.
Over the next 15 years, the haredi system added some 190,000 students, becoming the second largest system with 25% of Jewish students.
The national religious state school system added 64,000 students, an increase of 27%, and remained stable at just under 19%. The secular state school system grew by only 11%, adding 97,000 students and slipping from 64% of the Jewish population in 2000 to just 56% in 2015.
If these trends continue, by the year 2030 the secular state system will represent a minority of Jewish students, with only 46% of the population. Haredi students will make up more than a third of the Jewish school-age population, with roughly 36%. The national religious system will fall slightly to 18% of all Jewish students.
May 10, 2016 2:37 pm at 2:37 pm #1151449JosephParticipantThe non-Chareidi Orthodox, both in Israel and in the U.S., have followed their secular trendsetters in limiting themselves to 2.3 children on average. Hence the above net result, with the Chareidim having not changed in this regard.
May 10, 2016 2:44 pm at 2:44 pm #1151450HealthParticipantThere won’t be a state when Moshiach comes!
May 10, 2016 2:45 pm at 2:45 pm #1151451zahavasdadParticipantThe charedim will be forced to get jobs
If you are 50% of the population you cannot expect the other 50% to pay for your lifestyle, they will balk and if you try to force them and they cannot change the laws, they will leave making even more of a aid based society
May 10, 2016 2:52 pm at 2:52 pm #1151452akupermaParticipantIt is unlikely that the Israeli ruling class will give up power, suggesting they will try to coerce the hareidim to leave or perhaps will try to change the political system to minimize hareidi influence (e.g. limit voting to veterans of the army, etc.). If push comes to shove, remember who has the guns and who controls the economy. If the typical Palestinian was secular the zionists could ally with them, but most secular Palestinians are already Israeli citizens and vote for zionist parties, and what’s left would never ally with the zionists.
The demographics suggest that Israel’s future is fairly grim unless the secular zionists can reconcile themselves to living in a Jewish state, and unless the hareidim can “get their act together” and get prepared to take over and run a 21st century state.
May 10, 2016 3:45 pm at 3:45 pm #1151453Avi KParticipantAkuperma, actually the Chareidim are already moving. Young Chareidim are joining the IDF (hence the increasing shrillness and even violence of the die-hard extremists) and the general economy. The moetzet chochmei ha trah of UTJ approved, albeuit grudgingly, sitting in the government (actually Aguda was in the first government but then they hardened their stance).
On the other hand, the RZ are becoming more oriented towards learning and are establishing NGOs and holding yamei iyun on how to run a state according to Torah. I heard from Rav Yeshayahu Shteinberger in the names of Rav Kook and Rav Soloveichik that this is the nevua of Yehezkel regarding the union of Yehuda’s stick with Yoseph’s stick/ Yehuda, who established a state within a state in Goshen represents the Chareidim and Yoseph, who was an integral part of the government, represents the RZ.
The demographics state that Israel’s future is bright. The first flowering of our redemption continues to flower.
Health, actually not having a state might be after Mashiach. According to Rambam eevryone will keep Torah without coercion so it would seem that we will be able to have anarcho-capitalism.
May 10, 2016 3:48 pm at 3:48 pm #1151454Mashiach AgentMemberThe future state of Israel will be run by Hashem as it is being run now. Not by Netanyahu as YOU think, he is just Hashems messenger/middleman.
Lev Melachim byad Hashem….

May 10, 2016 4:38 pm at 4:38 pm #1151456akupermaParticipantWill the ruling class in Tel Aviv tolerate Israel being turned into a Jewish state? What happens if the hareidi majority gets to pick judges, and laws start getting overturned from a Torah’dik public policy perspective (n.b. Tel Aviv is world reknown for the sorts of tourism we can’t even talk about on YWN)? “Start-Up” Israel is largely secular, and militantly so – will they tolerate the change. If Chareidim have jobs, ask how many hareidim hold senior positions in the army, government, or private sector other than those dished out as patronage to the frum parties?

That’s the only kind of meaningful occupation you can think of?

Not now! Not ever! Even after Moshiach, didn’t you ever hear about Yessocher & Zebulon?
May 10, 2016 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #1151459zahavasdadParticipantSo who decided who is Yissochar and who is Zebulun
You cant force people to be the Zebulun, everyone is going to want to be Yissachar
May 10, 2016 8:46 pm at 8:46 pm #1151460HealthParticipantZD -“everyone is going to want to be Yissachar”
I don’t think so, especially the ones who are Frey nowadays!
May 10, 2016 9:00 pm at 9:00 pm #1151461zahavasdadParticipantThe frei ones are not going to want to pay for Yissocher and they do have ways not to pay. They could just leave for example.

No – they could not! You should read my posts before you respond. I was talking during the time of Moshiach.
May 10, 2016 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm #1151463zahavasdadParticipantThere will not be Frei jews during the time of Moshiach
May 10, 2016 9:19 pm at 9:19 pm #1151464simcha613ParticipantThere will be Frey Jews during the times of Mashiach? I imagine they would all become baalei teshivah. Why would baalei teshuvah be more inclined to be a Zevulon than an FFB?
May 10, 2016 9:59 pm at 9:59 pm #1151465WolfishMusingsParticipantEven in Moshiach’s time, human nature isn’t going to change. There will be those who will think (just as they do today) that some Jews are uberyidden while the rest of us are the lowly, disposable unteryidden, meant merely to serve.
The Wolf
May 10, 2016 10:16 pm at 10:16 pm #1151466JosephParticipantWolf, the goyim will be serving the yidden in the times of Moshiach, so it won’t be necessary for a yid to do anything other than Limud Torah.

None of that, even if true, negates a word I’ve said.

I didn’t say there would be! Reread my post. Those that are Frey now will be the Zevulon.

I’m not convinced that nobody would want to be Zevelun – I’m sure they got plenty of perks.
But maybe when Moshiach comes only those who have proven their dedication to learning, even when it’s hard, will continue to do so…

And I’m sure that when Klal Yisroel came into Eretz Yisroel, there were those who (just as they do today) wrongfully accused Shevet Yesachar of thinking that they were better than those “unteryidden” in Shevet Zevelun…
May 11, 2016 3:15 am at 3:15 am #1151470mddMemberAvi K, all Jews alive at the time will be keeping the Torah either by themselves or Moshiach (and his army and police) will force them.
May 11, 2016 3:32 am at 3:32 am #1151471mw13ParticipantBut really, I think we’ve touched on the most pressing issue of all here, more than working/soldiering vs learning: As the proportion of Chareidim increase, what direction will the relationships between the Chareidim, the DL, and the Chillonim take? Can they all learn to get along, and actually cooperate with each other? Or will the mutual distrust, questioning of motives, and general us-vs-them mentality increase until it tears apart the fabric of Israeli society?
May 11, 2016 5:45 am at 5:45 am #1151472Avi KParticipantAkuperma, actually many Chareidim are going into hi-tech. Their Gemaar heads make them perfect for it. The secular are also becoming more and more interested in Judaism. Rosh Yehudi gives lectures in the herat of secualr T.A. and HaShomer HaTzair kibbutzim are opening shuls,
Mdd, Rambam says at the end of Hilchot Melachim:
???? ???? ?????, ???????? ?????? ??????? ???? ?? ?????, ??????? ???? ?? ??? ???? ????? ????? ????, ????? “???? ???? ????? . . .” (????? ?,?). ???? ??? ???? ?????, ????? ?? ????? ???? ??? ????? ???, ????? ?? ????? ??????? ??????: ??? ??? ???? “????? ?????? ??? . . . ?? ???? ????, ?????? ???????” (???? ?,??). ??? ???? ????? ????? ???????? ????????, ???????? ??????. ????? ????? ????? ??? ???????, ?????? ??? ???? ????? ??? ???? ?????. ??? ???? ???? ?? ??? ????? ?????, ?? ???? ??? ???–????? ??? ?????? ??????, ?????.

MW, some Jews will be considered “uberyidden” because they really are, either because of yi??us (cohanim and levi’im) or because of superior Torah wisdom.
It could be that there will still be questions regarding laws and monetary disputes butthey will be resolved peacefully by battei din with losers accepting defeat gracefully. Work will either be done my gentiles or by robots (the navi only says “others”).
